Raising the bar for live sound consoles.

The Mackie Onyx 24.4 live sound mixing console upgrades the performance and functionality of the legendary Mackie SR24•4 while retaining its convenient 24-channel footprint.

The greatly enhanced 24-channel Mackie Onyx analog mixer includes 100mm Panasonic faders, all new mic preamps, completely redesigned analog circuitry, Perkins EQ, and a built in assignable stereo compressor/limiter section - all at a price that won't break the bank.

The Mackie Onyx 24.4's all-new mixer design for superior sound
In developing the Mackie Onyx 24.4 mixing console, the design team of analog engineers used the highest-quality components available - from premium op-amps to IC chips costing exponentially more than those used in previous designs. All new summing bus circuitry was designed from the ground up to maximize headroom, and the entire signal chain was electronically balanced from input to output, offering big, full-range sound and
lower noise than any mixer in its class. Most significantly, the analog mixing console features premium Onyx mic preamps, Perkins EQ circuitry, and THAT Corporation 4301 assignable stereo compressor/limiter chip, all custom tailored specifically for the Onyx 32.4 audio mixer.

    Boutique quality preamps
Although Mackie's previous generation XDR mic preamps set new standards for both quality and performance, the next generation Onyx mic preamps offer even greater fidelity, headroom and transparency - as well as better radio frequency (RFI) rejection and wider dynamic range than ever before. With specs like 123dB total dynamic range, -129.5 dBm equivalent input noise, and 0.0007% total harmonic distortion, Onyx preamps can easily hold their own against boutique standalone preamps.

Perkins EQ: "British" sound with greater filter control
Mackie enlisted veteran audio engineer Cal Perkins to develop the EQ circuitry for the Mackie Onyx 24.4. Perkins EQ circuitry takes the classic Wein Bridge circuit topology used in British mixing desks of the '60s and '70s and gives it greater filter and phase shift control. The end result is a very effective and extremely musical 4-band EQ with sweepable low- and high-mids - perfect for the throes of live sound mixing.

    Assignable onboard stereo compressor/limiter section
Sound engineers have long used master compressor/limiters to smooth out live sound mixes, maximizing the performance of any sound system. Mackie integrated a high quality master compressor/limiter chip from THAT Corporation into this 24-channel mixer. This assignable analog stereo compressor/limiter chip was designed and manufactured in the U.S. by veteran analog engineers, offering true RMS detection and
auto make-up gain for extremely accurate and musical results. The Mackie Onyx 24.4 mixer features independent Threshold, Ratio and Fast/Slow Attack controls, and can be assigned post fader to the L/R main mix (for system limiting and protection) or pre-fader to Group 1/2 or 3/4 outputs (for
grouped signal compression, like drums or background vocals). This reduces the hassle and expense of separate outboard processing.

    Master section
If total control over signal routing, talk back/monitor mixing, and external effects processing is what you seek, then look no further - the Onyx 4-Bus Series Master section has everything you've come to expect from a Mackie mixing console, and more. The onboard 6 x 2 Matrix Mixer is the solution to the "not-enough monitor send" blues. Not only can you use the Aux Sends to generate up to 6 monitor mixes, but the Matrix Mixer can be used to generate 2 additional independent mixes—ideal for IEM (in-ear monitor) systems, cry rooms, green rooms or other zoned outputs. Visual monitoring of Solo, Main output and compression/limiting is expertly handled via 4, giant 12-segment LED ladders. Even the Sub Groups feature 4-segment LED's, so you know what signal levels are at glance.

As a studio owner and pro-sound system designer & installer for more than 35 years I consider the Mackie Onyx series unbeatable. I have installed a dozen or more of the Onyx 24.4 and 32.4 boards and every client has been completely elated with the product with absolutely no problems or negative feedback from anyone. In my view there is nothing else on the market that is even close in features and quality without spending much more money. Having used most of the competition - you could spend twice the amount to get a much inferior product. We have not had any issues with meters or distortion (but then knowing how to use a meter may help) and find the headroom excellent and EQ exceptional. Fantastic product and highly recommended!

Although the features Mackie has built into this mixer are great I'm diappointed with the distortion of the signal before it even gets close to the red. We need to make sure that the channels don't get into the yellow or the signal starts to distort. Doesn't matter if it's on the channel strips or the outputs. I also find this mixer sound quality is good but definately a little strong on the high freq's. The price was right and the builds is of Mackie quality but I really don't think they got this one quite right.

    GREAT BOARD, GREAT BUY!!!

    By Matthew Haslam

    from PA, USA

Comments about Mackie Onyx 24.4 Premium 24-Channel Analog Live Sound Mixing Console:

I have used this product in my church and loved it so much I decided to buy it for my sound company. For the really low cost, I am able to plug in all the instruments and vocal lines the bands I do sound for could ever want and more. The Mackie 24.4 offers great features such as the aux. channels which I use for effects and monitor levels and offers phantom power in each individual channel which you won't find in many boards under $2,000. The board offers little to no noise even using wireless mics and lines which I havn't found in any other front house I've worked with. The cost is nothing compared to the quality sound and easy management of channels you'll find in this board. Makie makes it super easy to train newcomers to sound engineering, just incase you need to train someone on the spot before a show and for a company looking to make their investment back from the cost of this board, many of my customers hire my company solely because we use Mackie, the greatest sound board maker in the world

    Great mixer

    By Mitch-qn7bz

    from Canada

Comments about Mackie Onyx 24.4 Premium 24-Channel Analog Live Sound Mixing Console:

Amazing industry standard mixer. Great pre amps, great compressor, exceptional headroom, exceptional control over equilization. Would not recommend it to someone with limited experience with mixing though. But as long as you do some heavy duty research into the mixer and frequency management this mixer will not do you wrong. I would advise against using the stereo returns for effects.. I just run a couple lines from the aux 5/6 sends to inputs left and right on my effects processor, then to channels 21/22 and 23/24. That way i can set the levels of both reverb AND delay on each channel during soundcheck and can control the over all effects volume during the show which is extremely handy. With aux 5/6 tied up with effects, I use aux 4 to send a sig to my subs and long story short, I get unlimited control over the entire mix, and still have 3 aux sends for monitor mixes. this mixer is so worth it.

    The best preamps ever!

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Mackie Onyx 24.4 Premium 24-Channel Analog Live Sound Mixing Console:

This is one of the best boards you will ever see. The Onyx series of preamp has the most crystal clear quality along with the best headroom I have ever heard. The 4 band Perkins EQ also boost the signal and the sweepable mid frequencies allow you to pin point exact frequencies that may need adjusting depending the type of input signal. Sure it is not like a 15 or 30 band EQ, but it is dang close. Using effects with this board is supper easy as well, the stereo returns make it easy to put effects in the aux sends or monitors without any extra hookup. If this is not enough it has an awesome built in compressor that is amazing. It gives a huge signal boost with even clearer sound. This along with the dust protected 100mm faders put this mixer at the top. Some people like Allen and Health, but I truly think this board is better than Allen and Health. Onyx preamps ROCK!

Comments about Mackie Onyx 24.4 Premium 24-Channel Analog Live Sound Mixing Console:

I appreciate all of the incredible choices for outputs, but perhaps this board is too busy for my taste. At the end of the day, it is still a mixer and should be easier to use for simple settings. For example, most mixers have aux returns for effects. This board has a complex stereo return that can be blended with many other things. Almost everyone uses effects for live sound, this should be a straight forward hookup. The compressor is cool, but only seems to work on one thing at a time. I guess I am old school but I like monitor sliders, plenty of Aux sends and returns, and switches labeled Solo

Comments about Mackie Onyx 24.4 Premium 24-Channel Analog Live Sound Mixing Console:

I first started working with this board with a choir, and ever since fell in love. The Pre's sound awesome for the price. Yes it does clip some in yellow, so you have to mix on the conservative side. But while doing sound reinforcement it's not a bad thing. I never have any problems with my board, the 24.4. I love having 4 monitor mixes and two fx sends!

    Not Mackie's Best

    By JazzFour

Comments about Mackie Onyx 24.4 Premium 24-Channel Analog Live Sound Mixing Console:

Features are super nice for the price. But!! Make sure you stay out of the yellow. Doesn't seem to matter if on the rails or sub groups. And yes it is a bit on the bright side. It's a pain to get a decent sound out of it with out post eq's. We use it for broadcast and recording services. I would not recommend it for venue where the techs are not very experienced. I would not buy another one. Sorry Mackie. But you blew it with this model.

    Very Disappointed

    By Joel-yJTID

    from Newberry, SC

Comments about Mackie Onyx 24.4 Premium 24-Channel Analog Live Sound Mixing Console:

We have had trouble with the Mackie 24.4 from the start. One of the main channel slide was totally out. Just to touch it would bring a loud swishing sound through the syatem. We had to tape it down to even use the board. Also, the two stereo channels were defective. We are limping along with this until we can get a new board. It won't be a Mackie.
