Star machine, poor reliability

By Ray454

from Boston

Comments about Mackie Onyx 400F FireWire Computer Recording Interface:

This machine is well engineered with excellent noise and distortion specs, doesn't skimp on convertor quality (VERY important!), has very useful features and, not last, meets the linearity specs - tested in person!Reliability, however, leaves more to be desired. Within a year I had 2 headphone pots fail. Two screw openings were slightly misaligned, but enough to make opening the unit a hard task. "No attention to detail" is what Mackie's offshoring really screams about.

A really great product!

By CrMusic.info

Comments about Mackie Onyx 400F FireWire Computer Recording Interface:

There have been some complaints about the 400F but I can assure everybody that since the last driver update these boxes are flawless. It works with every program I can throw at it(including PC games). The pre-amps are beautiful and are the main reason to buy this. You won't regret it... and if you think you might start to Mackie will take care of it for you.

Great idea...

By Newstead77

Comments about Mackie Onyx 400F FireWire Computer Recording Interface:

Ok - here goes...Let me begin by saying that I own two 400F's, which have been updated with the latest firmware release. My attempts to record with this setup by linking the units via Firewire and Word Clocks via BNC cable have ended in dismal failure, i.e. annoying clicking/popping sounds, monitor mix going in/out, and finally one unit completely dying (won't even turn on now).I have tried and tried to make things work with these units, and it's not like I'm a complete idiot (engineering double major). I have read tons of manuals and troubleshooting guides, but to no avail.I would suggest that Mackie come out with a list of KNOWN, COMPATIBLE hardware/software that will undoubtedly work with these interfaces.Great idea - not so great results

could be more reliable.

By speedyfeet

from Casper, WY

Comments about Mackie Onyx 400F FireWire Computer Recording Interface:

the onyx 400f is an amazing machine to say the least. some of the best pre-amps out there and recording @ 192kHz is just phenomenal. The issues are small but very important. Many people (including myself) find the reliability of the mackie 400f to be quite sad. some days it works some days your computer cant pick it up. but overall still a good product.

A hard act to follow

By Randy-AMEVp

from Portland, Or

Comments about Mackie Onyx 400F FireWire Computer Recording Interface:

I have owned this for almost a year and have grown to love it more every day. For the first few months the software/firmware was not up to par (PC). But that has been fixed with the latest updates. My only ding for the 400F still is that the pots 'feel' like they could be easily broken. But I can live with that. The audio from this thing is awesome. Super clean audio. I have had friends listen to my recordings and ask me who I had do the recording and they are amazed when I tell them. It is so easy to setup and use (I?ve used other units that never started up the same way twice). Part of the value to me is to know I can set it up in a hurry and it is going to work. It has done everything I have asked of it. Would I buy it again? In a heart beat!

Sad experience for Sonar user

By HRMusician

from Norfolk, VA

Comments about Mackie Onyx 400F FireWire Computer Recording Interface:

I've always been a Mackie fan, using the 24x8 mixer in the studio and their active PA gear and mixers for live shows -- unbeatable. Sadly, the interface, because of their out-of-date drivers was a let down. I spent weeks researching, tweaking and could not get the close to the performance I had with the Delta 1010 it replaced. I couldn't work with most of my tracks recorded previously with the 1010. I run 4 gigs of memory on a AMD X2 Athelon 4200 in both 32 and 64 bit formats. Mackie may work great with other operating systems and DAW programs (like their bundled Tracktion), but if you run Sonar, go to the MOTU or Delta 1010. I'm using the MOTU 8pre now. It's less money, more features, better preamps and works flawlessly with Sonar Producer.

Top notch

By Notrub

from Alaska

Comments about Mackie Onyx 400F FireWire Computer Recording Interface:

The pre amps are great. I haven't had a single problem and have owned it for about 5 months. It is a little expensive, but I don't mind paying a premium for great gear.

best choice

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Mackie Onyx 400F FireWire Computer Recording Interface:

I compared many audio interfaces and the 400 f was the best choice. I have owned MOTU and M-Audio and the build quality of the Mackie exceeded my expectations. The features are thoughtful, dual headphone volume and seperate Control Room level. But the biggest surprise was the sound. I did not expect to hear a dramatic difference in the mic pres compared to my other interfaces but the Onyx preamps sound amazing. I highly recomend the Mackie 400f.
