I was a little bit leary of buying this mixer due to some reviews that I have read on here. Let me just say that after buying it, I couldn't be happier. My one complaint was when I opened the box I was looking for a manual but honestly there is no need for one. It is very user friendly. A mixer isn't hard to figure out but I was wanting to make sure I used the USB properly. So, I plugged the USB in and my editing software recognized it immediately. You can use this as a recording studio with no problem at all. If you know how to adjust your latenency settings on your computer then you should have absolutely no problem. As to people complaining about noise, maybe their cables are bad. I haven't had absolutely any problem with noise at all. I haven't used the phantom power yet so maybe that is where the noise comes into play, but with my Shure SM58 it is clear as a bell. I've paired this mixer up with the mackie Thump 12A speakers and I have to say this is all that I'll ever need. For live gigs this is awesome. You can hook up your computer and play your sound tracks through the USB and record the gig at the same time! Windows media player is all you need to play your sound tracks. The volume control is soooo easy to use and you barely have to turn it up at all. The first time I used it the volume on the computer was at 100% accidently and it just about blew my ears off and the setting on the mixer was only at 1. The effects are very easy to use and sound great. You don't get a lot of good for nothing effects on this, just some reverb, delay and chorus options and a couple of mixtures of the different effects. It is a very rugged build and I'm looking for this to last me for many many years to come. Basicly, BUY IT!

This is a typical Mackie mixer, very good sound quality and built like a tank. However, I found it suitable for DJs needs rather than a band. Unless you are really experienced/professional with mixers and band setups and can do without the missing functions (i.e. PFL button -needed to set gain structure-, sweepable mids knob, subgroups function, and you don't have the need to rack the mixer.) If you are ok without those functions then the Profx 12 is for you. DJs don't need those functions typically.
The Musician's Friend sales person that helped me, did not point out the differences between the profx12 and the profx16, he said the two were basically the same and the difference being the number of inputs and xlrs, which is not correct, the profx16 has all the functions needed for a band setup and is quite different from the profx12. I sold the profx12 to a friend who is a DJ and just bought the profx16 for my band.

Comments about Mackie ProFX12 Professional Compact Mixer:

I LOVE the ProFX series! Why? Well this board have never let me down. All of the inputs work flawlessly more than 3 years after purchase, the layout is so simple to use and visualize during use and it's the perfect size for a mobile DJ or small band. I've used this board for my band's live shows, all of my DJ gigs and recently started doing karaoke with it as well. Wish it had sweepable mids, but the larger ProFX boards do, which I'm upgrading to. The EQ options are great and the bypass switch is my best friend when DJing for when I want to cut the bass from my subs and then hit the crowd full blast again when the music drops. The monitor out is great for the band shows as well and the onboard FX are straight forward and easy to apply and adjust.

When DJing, I actually run my subs from the Mon out so that I have control over my subs on one slider and my mains on another. It's very convenient when we you only need your top speakers for during dinners at proms and other events. The phantom power is a nice feature as well, however, I don't use it anymore. I've never had a use for it in a live setting.

I did use the board a few times for recording in my home studio but found the USB connection to be very noisy and full of white noise. It may have been my computer, it could be the board, but I just don't use it anymore because it's my primary live board, which it holds up great for. I really have no complaints about this product. It has paid for itself over and over and continues to function perfectly for my small audio company. Great first mixer for anyone new to the music world!

And I should have gone with the next model the 16Profx
For my application .but the sound it's in my opinion way
Better than behringer .and the head room is amazing you get
Really good sound before you even reach unity.

Me and a few guys had a little gig at a coffee shop and we had the ProFX12 over to the side on a table. It really has good quality for just playing straight through a speaker. I really recommend it for a person who's tight on cash, and really if its you and a few other guys you don't need anything ells.

I was in need of a mixer that would be small enough for my desktop and yet it had to be of very good quality in sound for studio and live performance. I found what I was looking for in this mixer and have used it in a couple of live performances with most pleasing results. Clean sound, easy setup and compact. Also clean for recording too! The best of both worlds without breaking the bank!
          Thanks Mackie!

Comments about Mackie ProFX12 Professional Compact Mixer:

Typical Mackie sound with good eq. I own several Mackie mixers and this purchase was for a specific band that only needs the 6 xlr inputs. Very small footprint and decent fx makes for a quick and easy setup. Nothing fancy, but everything needed for a live performance with control over mains and monitors self-mixed from the stage. This mixer seems a tad short on gain as compared to some of its bigger brethren but it has not been an issue yet. I have not tried using the usb connection, so cannot comment on the problems others have noted.

This is a great board, from DJ'ing to live music events, this board can handel it all. High head room on all channels, would be great if each channel had a mute light to match. Add solo buttons and there wouldn't be much more a person could ask for. I'm using it to do sound for bluegrass, gospel, and even a couple or rock bands (electric drums = 1 channel)

Comments about Mackie ProFX12 Professional Compact Mixer:

I purchased this a few years ago as a simpler set up for small gigs to be used with SRM450's. It had replaced a larger board with a cartload of amplifiers, feedback reduction, and effects that took 7 men and a small boy to lift. This also minimized space needed for transportation. The PROFX12 worked worked beautifully for this. We had a nice reverb added to vocals and it performed flawlessly. It also provided a hotter signal than the older board. The unit appears to be well made, however, it gets light use and is babied. No sense in abusing gear to see if it can be broken. The down side for me was only having 6 XLR's. You can run out of inputs and have to get creative to balance a stage mix. I also had to pick up an adapter to use the powered monitors. There is no XLR monitor out. Overall, the unit does what it is supposed to do, and it does it without noise out front. So from that standpoint, the unit performs quietly. It's a good unit for an inexpensive portable unit. I would upgrade to something beefier if I had to depend on it for more constant use. I would recommend this to a friend, but would point out it's limitations.
