Been using the Mackies for almost a year now. They sound absolutely great until you try to push them. The bottom end thins out in an attempt to prevent overdriving. Cool feature, but it indicates that for my purposes as a live entertainer/DJ, a subwoofer is neccesary, which means more expense and lugging another piece of heavy equipment. One of my SRM450's required repair to an internal amp after a particularly gruelling wedding. The red overload light did not flash, yet damage occurred. I am used to seeing a full segmented meter on my other power amp to indicate when it is maxed out. I can better calibrate a compressor that way. With just a flashing light to go by it is difficult to tell just where the Mackie amps are in their workload. The bottom line is, I am afraid to crank them. For that reason they are being used less and less. Also, their odd egg shape makes them difficult to transport without banging them up too bad. So far, every 450 I've seen on stage have had dented speaker grills. They're really quite vulnerable. My other amps on the other hand are carpet covered and thrive on abuse, not to mention they pack perfectly in the back of my truck. No wobble, no complaints. As much as I want to be in love with the Mackie's, they really don't fit well into my vigourous road applications. I should also mention that there is a very audible hi frequency hiss emenating from the horns. It's not a problem at live venues, but in a quiet room it is very obvious. I would have expected them to be quieter. I would reccomend these speakers for acoustic sound reinforcement applications as opposed to direct program material. Dance music and heavy kick drums will tax them beyond their ability. You will need a subwoofer to get satisfying bass at loud levels.

I am using a Les Paul Studio guitar, a POD XT Live (Pro Tone on the Floor) and a pair of Mackie SRM450's. That's it! Nothing else. WOW! What a combination!! I like to create a large range of sound textures (from super clean, through mild crunchy, to insanely over the edge) with a wide dynamic range, in stereo, and with even room coverage at all frequencies.I tried plugging my POD into different "guitar amps", home theatre systems, and other powered "PA speakers". Those setups either cut the bass, cut the highs, "boomed", "honked", "shrieked", "beamed", or simply ran out of clean power. I bought stuff, tried it, and just ended up bringing it back within 2 or 3 days. When I took the Mackie SRM450's home, they were here to stay. The Mackie active speakers reproduce faithfully (NO BOOMING bass, NO HONKING mids, NO LINE-OF-SIGHT highs), and deliver my sound evenly into every part of the room with power to spare.I love my Mackie's! Try my setup. When you hear it, you'll ditch your so-called "guitar amp".

    best bang for the buck

Comments about Mackie SRM450 Active PA Speaker:

I have been DJing for several years and have worked with various PA/DJ sounds systems. After hearing the SRM450s during various events I already knew the quality and performance. Crisp highs, tight lows, and sophisticated looks of the SRM450. I own a pair and they are pushed hard on a regular basis, but never fail. Just wish Mackie made these in 15" otherwise you will need a sub for larger venues of 300+ people or for added bass for specific genres.

    pro quality at low cost

    By audiopro

Comments about Mackie SRM450 Active PA Speaker:

I've been in the audio field (musician, audio engineer, audio contractor & consultant) for over 35 years, and have used more than a few different brands of PAs in my time. NOTHING in this price range can match the Mackie SRM450s, either in quality or power! They're light weight, and easy to set up quickly. (They offer a few control options, for those who know how to use them, but they can also be used "plug & play".) The closest match, in sound quality and power (in my opinion) are EAWs (entry-level cost about $2,000/speaker). We played a gig once, in a venue that holds about 350 people. It was a rock-style show, with matching volume, and we only had 2 SRM450s, but they didn't have any problems keeping up. (The band included 2 keyboardists, 3 guitarists - one using a Marshall 1/2 stack, bass, drums, and 6 vocalists. We were running about 90-100dB, on an open stage, using 4 monitor mixes. Basically, pretty loud!) The interesting thing about that gig is we didn't use any extra EQing, just the channel EQs (3-band, with single mid-sweeps)! In non-tech terms, I mean that these speakers will work like a champ for ANYONE, whether you know how to operate a sound system or not! That's the proof that the technology behind them was created by the best speaker builders in the world - RCF. I haven't tried the Version2 speakers yet, but I may get the chance to install them into the next church system I up-grade. Lookin' forward to checking 'em out!

Comments about Mackie SRM450 Active PA Speaker:

I have been using these speakers for 6 years, I have used them in shows all around the world. They are tough enough to handle 2 deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, transported in armored humvees around the rough terrain and every time I set them up they work perfectly and put out enough sound to entertain hundreds of troops at a time. The sound is superb, clean crisp and great top and bottem end.

Comments about Mackie SRM450 Active PA Speaker:

I did an 800 audience show with 4 of these baby's as front of the house speakers and it did an awsome job. Didn't even use sub woofers coz' I was on the budget... who needs a subwoofer unless you're doing hip/hop right??? I just rent one for that purpose. They are a little expensive but are worth every penny. I had a mistake during practice and had a big feed back or pop type of sound and the speakers went out. I was like aaahhhhhh!!!... Then I turned it off and turned it back on and it was fine... The compresser driver thing or what ever it is really works to protect the speakers.BUY THIS UNLESS YOU ARE LIKE A REALLY BIG SHOP PRO OR SOMETHING then your record lable will pay for big stuff anyways.

Comments about Mackie SRM450 Active PA Speaker:

I've been a mobile DJ for 27 years, and have always believed that the Crown Amplifier and EV Speakers were the tops! I test drove a set of Mackie's for a Saturday Wedding, on Sunday I purchased two SRM450's and a matching powered Mackie Subwoofer. That was two years ago. I won't perform with anything else! Clean, crisp, lots of ooompf, even for the weddings of 400 people. Mackie = The Best!

These are ok, v2 is better

    By MiamiDJs4u.com

Comments about Mackie SRM450 Active PA Speaker:

I just bought the newer v2 generation of the SRM450 but have heard and played through these a lot in the past! I could not believe how much clearer the new v2's sound when I play EVERY style of music through them (no matter what volume). I was hesitant to buy them because of the blue color and the price but honestly I needed to stop carrying my amp rack and heavy passive speakers. The dark blue can only be noticed in daylight but they look great, at night they blend in and look like black speakers. The new v2's sound a lot clearer than the original SRM450 and are noticeably lighter (big plus). I pushed them hard for over 4 hours when I first got them in and there was barely any heat coming from the amp on the back (room temperature was about 78 degrees). I have not seen the peak light turn on no matter how loud I put them and the sound is AMAZING! If you want to receive compliments from your audience and lighten your carrying load when traveling, the v2's are the perfect speakers for you! I recommend a subwoofer to fill in the bass but even alone they hit hard as low as 55hz. I am very satisfied with my purchase and will most likely buy another pair in the future. If you have any thoughts or questions about the new Mackie SRM450v2, just ask me!

    Product Good, Service Sucks

    By frytlon

Comments about Mackie SRM450 Active PA Speaker:

Sound quality is excellent. Both highs and lows are crystal clear. However, I had an issue with one after about a year of use. It happens. However,Mackie does not repair your unit, they send you a "refurbished" unit from their inventory. The speaker I had was pristine. I hung it in the lounge on the day it arrived, and it had not been moved since. I use it only for piano and vocals in a small lounge. Not a scratch, and the speakers were never driven past half volumn. The unit I received had obviously spent a great deal of it's life in the back of a van. Scratches, gouges, dents in the speaker cover. Overall, it looks pretty rough. After talking to customer service, they promised to get back to me on a resolution. I am still waiting.

    Very impressed

Comments about Mackie SRM450 Active PA Speaker:

Our band played in scotland this summer, and the PA's we played through the first couple of shows were insufficient. We decided on impulse to buy a pair of these while at a small music shop in scotland. Amazing cut and clarity, these sliced right through a mesa dual rectifier, swr full stack, and a mapex saturn drumset. They just have a nice crisp sound with great transient response and full open vocals. I've always been a JBL or Peavey man, but I was amazed by the volume and clarity of these. We donated them to a local church at the end of the trip. We were sad to part with them.
