High-performance audio without the high price tag.

The Mackie Thump Series Powered Loudspeakers deliver deep low-end and real power in a lightweight design that is extremely portable. Class-D Fast Recovery amplification pushes unmatched power to the high-frequency compression driver and bass-pounding high-output woofer. Plus, Mackie Active processing, including a precision crossover and driver time-alignment provides total optimization for maximum system efficiency. Versatile by design, Thump loudspeakers feature a user-adjustable 3-band EQ for tone control and, since they can be pole-mounted or used as a wedge, the Thump Series loudspeakers represent the best value available for a complete stage solution.

More than Just a Powered Speaker Cabinet
Sure, Thump loudspeakers have a built-in power amp—in fact, each have two of them. Mackie's Class-D Fast Recovery low-frequency amp drives the woofer more efficiently with less heat byproduct than other speakers. But so much more goes into a Mackie loudspeaker design than just amplifiers. Mackie Active technology (based on the popular SRMv2 Series) divides the frequencies via a precision 2-way crossover and also time aligns the signals so low-frequency and high-frequency signals arrive in sync to every member of your audience. Active compression provides a first line of defense for the drivers and thermal circuitry protects the amplifiers and power supply should things get too hot. All the onboard electronic systems work together dynamically to produce superior quality sound previously unavailable in this price range.

    Portability Meets Versatility
For most people, portability is paramount. That's why Thump loudspeakers are ultra-compact and lightweight, especially the TH-12A which is less than two feet tall and weighs in just over 25lbs. For vocal-only scenarios and applications with acoustic instruments that require superior midrange, the TH-12A shines.

Not only are Thump loudspeakers superb PA enclosures, they also make a superior monitor wedge—just lay the cabinet on its side and turn it up. The compact, lightweight design means zero strain, whether mounting it on a high pole or loading up the van. Ultra-wide frequency response makes them ideal as a keyboard, vocal or even bass guitar monitor. Thump loudspeakers have incredibly smooth response and dispersion over a wide range of frequencies, so you can crank 'em up and they still sound smooth and never harsh.

    Exceptional Sonic Performance
Thump Series powered loudspeakers put out a tremendous amount of sound for their size and price tag. The 2-way ported design generates ample quantities of chest-pounding bass, and their 1" compression driver ensures smooth, wide dispersion. Mackie even inserted a 3-band equalizer at the input to give you all the tonal control you could ever want, with an available 15dB boost or cut at 80Hz (low shelf), 100Hz to 8kHz (sweepable mids) and 12kHz (high shelf). With their extremely versatile EQ, you can add some extra thump to that kick drum, bring out the sizzle in your hi-hats, add pop to vocals or correct acoustic anomalies in the room.

    Protecting Your Investment
Because Mackie knows you demand the most from your speakers, They added some extra circuitry to keep your Thump loudspeakers performing at their best, even when pushed really hard for long periods of time. Each driver has its own transparent compression circuit, which helps protect them from damaging transient peaks. An over-excursion filter, inserted just before the low frequency amplifier, protects the woofer from bottoming-out when the low-end is driven to the maximum. This means you can hit them hard without fear of thermal damage. Mackie knows things can get pretty hot in the real world, so if the electronics do overheat, separate thermal switches activate and shut down the high and/or low frequency amplifiers until they cool down. These safeguards ensure long life and great-sounding loudspeakers you can always count on.

First of all, read the manual and understand something about pro sound signal. The level knob on the back isn't a volume knob. It works like a level knob on a mixer (as explained in the manual). The purpose of this knob is to match the gain of the input with the level of the signal you are feeding it. For example, if you are plugging a mic directly into this cab you will need more gain than if you ran a line level signal from a mixer or even a keyboard, acoustic-electric etc. with a hot output. The "volume" on the amp section is already at max usable level so there is no knob for that (thank you Mackie). This is why when the other reviewers try to turn it up the cab begins to clip and distort - it is like over driving a mixer channel or cranking up the "pre" side of a guitar amp. All Mackie products use the concept of "unity gain" which is great but you have to learn how to use it properly to take advantage of it.This is a great [$] powered 12" cab. It isn't for bass, you want big bass pair it with a sub. It isn't the SRM450v but then it also isn't $600 - so stop comparing them. The best recommendation is always to wait and save, save, save for better gear if you can. But if you can't and you don't expect more than inexpensive gear can deliver, sometimes you can get a deal on something functional.

Recently i decided to add another 12 inch active speaker to our p.a.and because of the reviews i tried a TH-12A . I have a behringer B212A i have used for years (A amplifier technology) with good results though as i increase the volume i have to decrease the bass and treble but in the end it has been reliable an if you know what to do sounds good. I did an A B comparison by just running a cd player at low volume into the mackie, i started with the eq,s at 3 and the eq switch off and was startled to find that it clipped badly by the time the volume hit 4.5 and was constant at 5.5.So i turned all 3 eq,s off and it still clipped constant before a volume of 6. I then turned the eq sitch to on and this allowed me to hit 6.5 before the clip was constant but the volume dropped by maybe 30 %. There is no locking knob for the pole mount so it would move back and forth during a performance. The construction is alright and the weight is good but overall my old amp technology behringer blows this away, even when it was not clipping the b212a behringer sounds much better. I went home and tried the same test with the old b212a and no comparison much more volume much clearer. So i ordered a Behringer b212d (class d new technology ) and when it got here i was blown away much better than the old one and twice as loud as the thump, much louder than my old cab. Do yourself a favor an if you buy a Mackie buy a real one as these are Tapco,s with a Mackie name and they are not fit to carry the name Mackie.

I rolled the dice and bought this as a "used" item. The item description and pictures helped me make a decision. This speaker had been dropped and the the left rear corner/foot of the plastic cabinet was damaged. I was pleasantly surprised to find that ALL of the broken pieces were there, and it was a 15 minute job to glue it back together. Other than the damage noted, the speaker looked brand-new, and after using it at band practice the other night, it sounds fine. I saved $75 off of the "new" price.

Bought from the "Stupid Deal of the Day" primarily because I have several Mackie products that are excellent and I was looking for a space-saving powered speaker. The speaker arrived without the manual, which I found on line, and it was obviously repackaged but note the email sent out by MFriend did not state that it was a restock item. I only noticed it was a restock after I hit the "Order" button. I have been debating sending it back but trying to get it to sound OK using external EQ and my Mackie mixer. It is very limited on it's input signal and maybe I should have spent more money for a better speaker.

These speakers are the best value in the crowded category of 12" powered PA speakers. Plenty of Power for all but the most demanding, e.g. outdoor gigs of say greater than 300+ people. Great bass response. Versatile. I run my POD XT directly into one for impromptu practices. Vocal sound, is outstanding. I run a mackie 1642 board with Alesis outboard gear.

I received these yesterday. I purchased them during "Stupid Deal Of The Day" so the price was right. I was hoping that they could be used for small venues. Hooked them up and found that they clip at a medium low volume. I tried them with a turbosound sub to see if that would help. It did, somewhat, but I tried to eq them and couldn't find a sweet spot for the vocals. I guess for the price I paid they,re ok, but I am really disapponted with their overall performance.

I have been recording and performing on and off all of my life. I hope this unit has a long life! If you want/need a cheaper, light and small, small venue unit, or a monitor, this might be a good choice. If you are into quality sound, keep looking. My Kustom monitor, rated at 100 watts, sounds almost as loud and has a higher quality sound, surprisingly, than this Mackie unit rated at 150 watts.

Comments about Mackie Thump Series TH-12A 12" 2-Way Powered Loudspeaker:

These cabinets would probably be great if you were to place them in a church or use them as a house PA in a club, but WARNING!!!

If you have to actually use them in a working band forget it. They won't hold up to any abuse at all. Every working musician knows that at some point a speaker is going to get knocked over or rained on. It just happens.

I have purchased 4 of these in the last 6 months and I can't keep 2 of them working at the same time. I had one that dumped on me within the manufacturers warranty period and took it to my local Mackie repair shop and they've had it for a month and tell me they are waiting on parts from Mackie. Right now out of the 4 (remember this is within a 6 month period) I have 1 that works, but it tipped over while I was packing up the other night so I might not have any that work now. I'll be switching back to my passive speaker set up and hopefully I can get a couple of these working and use them for monitors. They sound great, but aren't road worthy.

Come on Mackie! Field test your stuff for ruggedness. When you're tired at the end of the night, packing up at 2:00am, you don't want to have to bubble wrap your gear before you load it in the truck.

I bought them because of the Mackie name and the reasonable price. I guess regardless of the name...you get what you pay for.
