I'm an old school musician and studio owner for 30 years now. I know what good sounds like and quality looks like.
These speakers are surprisingly good sounding compared to anything near their price range. I went through quite a lot of them before I decided these were the best compromise. In order to find anything that sounds as clear and still balanced and music as these you need to pretty much double and a half the price of these. They are lightweight too which is something I am appreciating more and more these days.
They claim to be 1000W but to be fair, they sound like about 500 watt to me when put next to other 500w speakers to compare.
Most powered monitors tend to be tinny, midrange heavy or bass heavy and not balanced. That IS the case with these. These tend to be bass heavy but it is easy to roll off bass and not lose the musicality of they sound. It is very hard to fix mids and highs so if you have to pick a devil, this is the best case.
If you are a small acoustic group, solo artist that plays acoustic guitar than you'll love these. That is what I bought them for. If you are a hard rock band or DJ you'll like these but probably want to still by a subwoofer because even though they are bass heavy they don't produce enough bass to drive a dance bottom end like most clubs want.
Either way they are extremely good for the price and now they look like they are 100 cheaper than when I bought them.

I play keyboards and use(d) this as a live rig in small venues, or as a monitor in larger spaces.
EQ went south after 6 months.
A year later: set up for a gig -- powered up but no sound. Cables are fine, etc. Luckily sound guy had an extra monitor. Yeah I gig with it a lot but it always travels protected. The speaker on my iPhone lasted longer than this . . . even after dropping it in the sink doing dishes one night.

Anyway, from my experience this is a poorly built piece of equipment. Don't have too many complaints on the sound quality when it was working though.

Comments about Mackie Thump12 1000W 12 Powered Loudspeaker:

I bought one slightly used. So far mostly I use it at gigs as a Keyboard monitor. Good balance for piano sounds. Works well for Organ as well. Easy to transport. Just don't try to sit on it while you play the top gets hot and may overheat. I think its cooling fins are near the top. I played it indoors in the A/C on a hot summer day and almost had a problem. So don't stack any gear on top either not a god idea. Top needs to be ventilated to work well. That's why it work so well on a pole stand. Overall I am very pleased with quality of sound and portability. For its size and weight excellent.

Picked this up to use with my Roland e-drum kit. I run thru our PA system, most of the time, but also use it 'stand-alone'... has pretty good power & low end.

Comments about Mackie Thump12 1000W 12 Powered Loudspeaker:

Ordered these based on great experience with Mackie mixers over the years. The Alto Truesonic 2 models I wanted were out of stock, so I tried these to use as monitors with the Thump 15" models that I ordered for mains.

First, they look pretty good. Cabinets are lightweight, and the green power light is a nice touch. That's about where the good ends, IMO.

First off, Mackie really missed the ball when they passed on a Ground Lift switch. Certain buildings have enough electrical issues that 60 cycle hum can be a real annoyance. A ground lift should be a no-brainer on any powered speaker.

Second, the separate eq controls on the speakers are more of a hinderance than a help. Even at "flat" settings, there is way too much mid-bass and the highs are nearly painful... even with eq flat on the board. Bass is not at all what I expected. When you call something "Thump," you expect there to be a ready supply of great bass. Well, these speakers have the oddest sounding bass I've ever experienced. Speakers bottom out very easily, and distort... even a lower volumes.

Third, these speakers are supposed to be rated at 1000 watts, but their lack of presence and response makes them sound much less powerful. Even with the volume dimed on them, the sound is only moderately loud when pushed.

The Altos that I have owned blow these away. These are going back, and I'll wait on the new Truesonics to come in.

      Good for vocal monitor

Comments about Mackie Thump12 1000W 12 Powered Loudspeaker:

We bought a Mackie 12" Thump powered speaker specifically to use as a vocal monitor for our drummer, who requires more volume than our passive monitors provide. I set the EQs as recommended for monitor use. The sound was very crisp and cut right through the stage clutter volume. The unit does not have as much power as I expected from a 1000 watt Class D, but it is enough for our purpose, which is specifically vocals only p.a. monitor.

The build quality seems to be first rate. It's a little bit awkward to carry, though. There are two molded handles on the sides, which is only useable if you pick it up with both hands and carry it chest high. Awkward. There is also a molded handle on the top, which is a more normal way to carry it, but it doesn't have any grip recess, so it might slip out of your hand. Also awkward. I tend to tuck the power cable in there, which is something designers should think of for all powered speakers - give us a place to stuff the power cable when transporting!

I have not tested this unit for use as a main speaker, or recorded music, but it's great for a compact, lightweight, easy to use vocal monitor, especially when space on stage is at a premium. We have only gigged once with it so far. But I think it's going to be a good unit - my only complaint is they could have made it easier to carry, but that's sure not a deal breaker.

Comments about Mackie Thump12 1000W 12 Powered Loudspeaker:

I conducted extensive research among many manufacturers and models, at various price points, and purchased a set of 4 of these speakers for multiple aspects. I am very pleased with this purchase. They sound very clear, full, with plenty of volume and balanced sound across the frequency spectrum. These speakers respond very well to mixer eq at low, mid, and high frequencies, and have a versatile eq of their own,(with sweepable mids), which most of the time I found remained flat due to good overall base sound. But its reassuring to know its there if needed, and will undoubtedly be used at various times. This second Thump iteration has excellent headroom in volume, and full lows which are tight and punchy and can be articulated with eq depending on if they are on stands or the floor or other surfaces, mwith both additive and subtractive eq. Im looking very forward to concerts with this set, and thus far have filled the house with satisfying sound. For the price, the sound quality, the volume, the size and weight, these speakers offered the best option and feature set, and in my opinion is best in class. I am admittedly a trusting customer of MACKIE, as they have for many years been an excellent Northwest audio company, offering quality and durable products. I have used countless VLZ mixers through the years, and currently combine an 802vlz4 into these speakers. The sound is pristine, and I expect will be utilized for a myriad of projects, sounds, textures, and styles.

Bought these to use for stage monitors and use for rehearsals with just vocals going through them. Very powerful and clean sounding. The sound quality on these exceeded my expectations. For a small lightweight speaker these things just pound. I wouldn't be afraid to even use these as mains on small events on top of a pair of subs. You won't be disappointed with these speakers at all. For the price they can't be beat!!!!

When singing/playing in churches, you dont need to bring a subwoofer along with your gear to pumch out those low frequencies if you have these speakers. The low end on thses is very nice. The highs are crystal clear as well. This powered speaker will give you professional quality sound. If you need a big booming sound, this product is the best way to go, at a great cost.Plenty of power. Not to mention a 3 band eq. I highly suggest these Mackie thumps.
