MOTU

A compact and versatile audio interface with hybrid FireWire/USB2 connectivity, on-board mixing and effects, and superb sound.

As the first-ever "hybrid" audio interface of its kind, the MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid provides flexible and mobile operation via FireWire or hi-speed USB2 connectivity to a Mac or PC computer, with professional audio quality at sample rates up to 192 kHz and plenty of I/O, including two mic/instrument inputs, six line-level analog inputs, ten channels of analog output, stereo S/PDIF and a stereo headphone output.

Housed in a rugged, compact half-rack enclosure you can take anywhere, the UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid Audio Interface is equally well-suited for studio and stage, with or without a computer. As an interface or standalone mixer, the UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid provides 10 separate inputs and 14 separate outputs.

Connect all of your recording studio equipment, including microphones, guitars, synths, keyboards, drum machines, effects processors and even MIDI devices to this MOTU audio interface. Record, monitor, route and process all of these live inputs using the professional on-board CueMix FX digital mixer — with no latency and no processor strain on your computer. Apply hardware DSP-driven effects processing to inputs, outputs, and busses independent of your host computer. Add Classic Reverb with lengths up to 60 seconds. Further sculpt your sound with 7-band parametric EQ featuring filter types carefully modeled after British analog console EQs. The MOTU UltraLite lets you choose between two forms of compression: a conventional compressor and the Leveler, an accurate model of the legendary LA-2A optical compressor that provides vintage, musical automatic gain control.

The MOTU audio interface's included CueMix FX cross-platform mixing software provides attractive graphic mixing, graphic editing of parametric EQ, and a convenient tabbed interface for quick access to all features in one window. Advanced signal analysis tools include a full-screen real-time FFT display, spectrogram "waterfall" display, oscilloscope, X-Y plot and linear or polar phase analysis.

After programming the on-board mixing in the studio, unplug the MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid from the computer and take it on the road for operation as a stand-alone mixer with effects. All mixing and effects parameters are adjustable using the front panel backlit LCD.

The MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid Interface provides cross-platform compatibility with Mac and Windows and all of your favorite audio software and host-based effects via WDM/ASIO/Core Audio drivers. Or you can use the included AudioDesk workstation software for Mac, with 24-bit recording/editing and 32-bit mixing/processing/mastering.

Features
  • Hybrid FireWire/USB2 connectivity — connect to your computer via either bus-powered FireWire or hi-speed USB2.
  • CueMix FX — flexible 10 input/14 bus mixer with on-board DSP effects, including reverb with sends/returns, plus EQ and compression on every input and output.
  • 10 inputs/14 outputs — there's no channel sharing in the UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid; the mic inputs, S/PDIF I/O, headphone out and main outs are all handled as separate channels.
  • Classic Reverb — provides five different room types, three frequency shelves with adjustable crossover points, shelf filtering and reverb lengths up to 60 seconds.
  • Two forms of compression — a standard compressor with conventional threshold/ratio/attack/release/gain controls and the Leveler, an accurate model of the legendary LA-2A optical compressor, which provides vintage, musical automatic gain control.
  • Modeled EQ — provides 7-band parametric EQ modeled after British analog console EQs, featuring 4 filter styles (gain/Q profiles) to effectively cover a wide range of audio material. LP and HP filters are also supplied with slopes that range from 6 to 36 dB.
  • CueMix FX cross-platform mixing software — attractive graphic mixing, graphic editing of parametric EQ and a convenient tabbed interface for quick access to all features in one window. Also provides full-screen real-time FFT display, spectrogram "waterfall" display, oscilloscope, X-Y plot and linear or polar phase analysis.
  • Front-panel control — access any setting in your entire UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid mix directly from the front panel.
  • "Reverb return" stream — allows users to record or mix UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid reverb output separately in their DAW. Effects can also be applied when the UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid is operating stand-alone (without a computer) as a complete stand-alone mixer.
  • Stand-alone operation — program your mixes at the studio and then bring the UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid to your gig — no computer needed. Just plug in the included power adapter and you are ready to go. Need to tweak the mix? Do it on site using the back-lit LCD and front-panel controls.
  • Multiple CueMix FX mixes — for example, create different monitor mixes for the main outs and headphones. Or add send/return loops for outboard gear — with no latency.
  • Two combo jacks provide hi-Z ¼ " guitar input or low-Z XLR mic input with phantom power, pad and plenty of gain.
  • Eight 24-bit 192kHz analog inputs and outputs on balanced/unbalanced ¼ " TRS jacks
  • Precision Digital Trim — Digitally controlled analog trim on all analog inputs (mic/guitar inputs plus quarter-inch TRS inputs) provides accurate adjustments in 1 dB increments. Fine-tune the balance of your analog inputs and then save/recall trim configurations.
  • Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) — a DSP-driven phase lock engine and internal clock source that produces imperceptibly low jitter characteristics (below the noise floor), even when the UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid is resolved to an external clock source via SMPTE time code.
  • Time code support — directly resolves to (or generates) time code via any quarter-inch input or output, without the need for an extra synchronizer.
  • Sample-accurate MIDI — connect a MIDI controller and/or sound module with no separate interface needed. MIDI I/O is sample-accurate with supporting software.
  • Expandable — add additional interfaces for more I/O as your needs grow.
  • Separate TRS main outs with front panel volume control.
  • Stereo 24-bit 96kHz S/PDIF in/out.
  • Includes drivers for Mac & PC, including ASIO, WDM, Wave, Core Audio, and Core MIDI. Supports all popular Mac and Windows audio software.
  • 100% compatible with all host-based effects processing in today's popular audio programs.
  • Includes AudioDesk full-featured sample-accurate workstation software for the Mac with recording, editing, mixing, real-time 32-bit effects processing & sample-accurate sync.
  • Plug-and-play operation with your Mac or PC via FireWire or USB2.
  • Front panel volume control for monitoring. Stereo, Quad, 6.1, 7.1 and user-defined surround monitoring setups available.
  • Front panel headphone jack with volume control.

Comments about MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid Audio Interface:

I bought this primarily for use in my home recording studio and on location for performance recording. It works as advertised but some laptops introduce noise (hard drive?) into the mix through the firewire connection. Used with my Macbook Pro solid state laptop it is perfect.

I find it difficult to change settings via the front panel knobs, although they do work. Best to use the Cuemix software. The less you use the knobs the less likely they are to break off which is a common occurrence with these and its Ultralight predecessors.

It works! It's solid and it takes a lickin' and keeps on... working.

UltraLite-mk3 WOW!

By David Russell

from Melbourne, Australia

Comments about MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid Audio Interface:

For price Vs performance this interface is excellent. Probably not up there with RME or the like but I doubt many folks could really tell the difference in a home studio environment. For my ears this unit is perfect in my situation. Well thought out interface, easy to configure and has on-board effects (good quality as well). If you are looking for a couple of decent mike pre's, a handful of analog inputs, plenty of outputs, Plug and Play, this is the interface for you! Has one MIDI port for convenience. Nearly forgot, it is Bus Powered so NO wall wart (FireWire only. You will need power if connecting thru USB) .

I would guess this is a top seller for MOTU.

WHY DIDNT I GET THIS SOONER?

By BlackGnosis

from Oregon city OR

Comments about MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid Audio Interface:

I'm running FL Studio signature (current version as of the releaser of this reveiw) on a ASUS G73-sw (Gaming laptop, woo!) and my latency under optimal (not the tightest I could go for but it works with everything I've thrown at it) with my sampling at 44.1 (mixer 64 hermit) my buffer at 128 smp, my total latency including plugins I commonly use were at 7ms.

My playback in daw while running a live channels been flawless and I feel no need to hesitate for using this at a live show. Its midi clock is well done as always. One thing I wish it had was a hardware access to listen in the mix, this of course is easily enabled in cuemix but its my only downside, its minor and rarely do I see using this device without a computer handy so its not a big deal.

If it were a desktop system and I wanted to pull more from the CPU i'd get it down tighter, (lowest smp you can clock at is 64) but it isnt necessary. Being a Synth voice and guitarist, This little box definately suited my needs. Everything that recorded in came in loud, bright and clear, and I didnt have to crank up the headphone amp to listen back. and when doing voice work, I love this little box. Yeah it costs an arm and a leg, but it works great, and if your using it under the same circumstances that I am, it is ideal and fitting.
All the bells and whistles expected from an I/O of this flagship quality. Current win7 drivers and CUEMIX (its included soft controller) are a breeze to work with, I keep a small lightweight and mobile studio so for me it was worth every penny. As an I/O All the connections slip in very solid, NO WIGGLING, built in compression eq options and verb like all good devices should have. Great internal eiditing setup and the ability to record at 192? USB 2.0 works like a dream, it doesnt impair bootup with my computer like my older device did. It also has FW and USB so I'm not shafted and having to rely opn questionable chipsets on FW support. It included a half rack kit so If I nab another half rack motu I can link em up and mount them. on a USB only laptop this was an idea buy for me, if I wanted more ins I'd have gotten a mixer or saved a little longer and gotten the 828.
Built like a bloody tank! The knobs on it look chinsey but they do their job, Neutrik connections are solid and the rear TRS ports are snug and tight. Its a little heavy but you want it to be! You've got a wide range of recording spectrom which is clean, quiet and does give you unwanted hissing or sass unless your gear is noisey. CueMix, its software controller program works like a VCR level of simple, if your lost, just read the manual, that's what it's there for.
Now here is where some people will fuss, if you're really pickey about latency and you want a tight real time recording or perfrmance, this device has your back. if your using a daw and bouncing your tracks. This will be wildly above your price range, get a Tascam or something for that stuff. This device is very flexible for my needs in the studio and considering the performance environment I operate under and perform with, it was worth the buy. Many of its features are adjustable so its more comfertable to work with.

Good Starting Gear

By TeKnizhun

Comments about MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid Audio Interface:

This is a very good sounding audio device I've had it for a year now and it gave me no problems.Great mixing capabilities although it get's tricky trying to use the onboard effects with your host software effects.( I wouldn't recommend it)But with a good computer you can used this with any host software(i've used Cubase,Soundforge,Samplitude to name a few) and never have problems. Great for recording and mixing. However for Mastering the D/A converters are not mastering grade.

Great quality but frequent system crashes.

By Rimshot-tskAt

Comments about MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid Audio Interface:

I've been using Motu as an audio interface for about 10 years now. For quality it's the best I've found for the price. I have a different opinion about the Motu Ultralite Hybrid. The first unit that arrived was defective. Musician's Friend kindly replaced it and I now have a working product. However, the Hybrid has common incompatibility issues with Windows and has been giving me frequent Blue Screens of Death. I found that this is very common with Hybrid users. I would not recommend this product to Windows users until Motu can come up with a solution for driver malfunctions and frequent system crashes.

Great!

Comments about MOTU UltraLite-mk3 Hybrid Audio Interface:

This MOTU interface works great with Windows 7! It has lots of I/O, impressive specifications and a really nice software mixing/setup application with utilities built in.I would not want to program it from the little front knobs, but with a computer and included software there is no need to. I have also been pleased with their MIDI interfaces.I have used this interface with both Firewire and USB - both work well. This hardware will not go obsolete for many years due to the choice of computer interface. I do prefer Firewire, if I have it. I recommend it for the studio or laptop. Joel in Dallas
