Comments about MXL 840 Small Diaphragm Instrument Microphones (Pair):

With this being the next generation after the 603 series, I expected it to show some kind of improvements... But that is not so.
These mics are OK. They have a wide frequency response, lightweight(although the mics seem to be on the flimsy side), and come with good shock mounts.
But the noise level is much higher than I expected, which is quite disappointing, as most manufacturers have been bringing the noise floor down, not up.
I'd return them, if I could...

Comments about MXL 840 Small Diaphragm Instrument Microphones (Pair):

These are exactly what I needed. Been using them as drum overheads in my low end home studio and they do a really great job of picking up the cymbals snare and toms, and with only one soundproof blanket in between them and the guitar amp, they still don't pick up a ton of guitar.

I will warn you though, they sound a little empty without a room mic and a bass drum mic so don't expect to be able to do Glyn Johns method. Either the pickup pattern, or the frequency response limits the bass drum from really cutting through and the snare sounds really thin without some kind of natural reverb. Been using a hallway mic (large diaphragm condenser) and a dynamic mic to just pick up the bass drum (SM58 lol I know, but trust me a little EQ and it sounds fine). Assuming you have enough other mics to cover that then you could even consider this a good thing because you won't have to worry about the overheads interfering with the bass drum mic.
