This is a tricky subject. This is a good mic for a home studio for the price. That being said, this mic is cheaply built and does not sound balanced. It is very, very bright. Uncontrollable high frequency boost on this thing. I tried to EQ around it on a recording and it just made it sound worse. Sibilance was also a problem here, even with a de-esser.To the amateur home recording enthusiast, you will probably think this mic sounds great. Next to a 58, recorded, it really does sound better. But, for a large diaphragm condenser mic, even in this price range, I would recommend something else. Anyone with experience should be able to hear how skewed the high frequency response is, when compared to higher dollar condensers.

MXL 909 Review

By Eric Davenport

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

the 909 is a good mic in the right hands and used with the right equipment and technique.Make shure you have it pointing in the right direction (yes boys and girls there is a front and back to some mic's ) or you will get that muddy sound the so many people have talked about, I have scene people try to record with it backwards and try to EQ it.when I tell them turn it around and they do well what else can I say.The 990 is a good mic to have at hand. And it works great for voice over work.

Great newbie mic

By Geoker

from NYC

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

I am a casual songwriter who produces songs in garage band. I was not happy with muddy vocals from my SM 58, so I bought this mic. I directly compared recordings without effects or EQ, and was amazed by the sound from this mic. Bright, rich, airy, detailed. Do not hesitate buying this as your main microphone for vocals for at-home recording. I am using it with an ART Tube MP Project Series Tube Microphone/Instrument Preamp.

Great For The Price!

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

I just got the MXL 909 last week! The 909 is a really great mic for the price. It's not THE BEST mic you can buy, but I bet it's the best mic you can buy for in this price range. I'm running the 909 through my ART TUBE MP Mic Preamp. You do need to do a little EQing, but for me that's no problem!I would say overall that this is a great condenser mic. GO PICK ONE UP!

No thanks

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

I have had this mic for a while. If you're a rocker, I would not recommend this mic. Like the guy said earlier too much noise going into it permanently breaks the microphone. I cannot do anything with the mic because of the crackling. It was a good price, but not a very durable mic. Didn't have a very long life span.

Best bang for the buck!

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

I'm starting to set up a small home studio where I have been trying to find the best deals where I don't have to spend too much money. When I got this mic I was blown away by the quality. Its very nice to have, especially for vocals. Definitely take a look at this one.P.S. It's a condenser mic so it needs phantom power (+48V) and use a windscreen (pop filter)to prevent you from short circuiting the mic. (thats why people are getting the crackling noise that eventually breaks it)

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

I use this mic for recording guitar amps, and acoustic. Sounds fairly good, a little dark, or muffled. but over all fine! (as long as the SPL's are low!) bad pulsives, but for light vocals, room mics, insturments, you cant beat the price! One problem was with the shockmount, the wing nut on the clamp broke a couple days after recieving it. Thank god for spare nuts and bolts!

What a surprise!!!

By E J R

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

I bought this mic for home studio recording and have had it for about six months. Last week I had to play for a benefit singing and took it to use with my buddy's PA, just in case. Wow, when we used it for live bluegrass like the old days when everybody gathered around the mic to play it rocked the house. I stood out and listened when some of the other bands played and it was just plain awesome. I also use an Art tube pre-amp for the phantom power and the combo really came alive together.

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

This is a great mic to start out with. I used it for vocal recording. It's a bit muddy an d distorted but for the money you get what you pay for. I say go for it, then later on upgrade when you get more serious in music recording.

GOOD FOR THE MONEY!

By J CRILL

from Pittsburg, KS

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

This is the first mic I have ever owned or recorded on. I think the sound you get out of it depends on your skills as an engineerer because the sound that comes out is kinda on the rough side. But my vocals end up with a great sound because of me tweaking them. It's really hard to say though because this is the only mic I have ever used.

Works great....

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

I couldn't see how this mic could receive anything less than a perfect score. I have an extremely small setup in my basement, and it records vocals flawlessly. Maybe I just haven't heard a real "good" mic, but i can't deny that this gets the work done for a great price.

Crappy

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

This thing is great, if you have no recording experience what so ever. It has a constant noise around 6.5 K and is very hollow. I don't own it, but borrowed it in a jam. Not a good Mic.

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

I use a $500 mic at my job. When I bought this mic I actually liked the sound of it better. So, it's not the price tag that matters. Shop around. This mic has an unbeatable price for what you get.Let me add, I do voice over?s and commercial work.

great mic

By the kid-n0INd

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

ok, let's face it, unless you are spending in the 800+ range for a condensor microphone, anything below that is going to essentially have the same components. Sure, there are going to be some that are "better" made, they may hold up better or have a better metal coating on them or something minor, but overall, they'll be the same. whether you spend 100 or 400, you'll get the same microphone. This mic for the money is great. You can control "how it sounds" with whatever program you are using to record it, and what mixer you have it running into for those of you who complain about it sounding warm, or clear, etc.. I use Garageband w/ a iMac G5 w/ M-Audio, a very basic set up and I have gotten great sounds. For the money, it's a great buy for this Marshall product. The case it comes w/ is a bit on the cheap side, but whatever, I'm not one to haul my microphone around with me places... so no biggy.

Perfect Balance

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

For me, this mic has a perfect balance of warmth and clarity, while maintaining crispness. It clearly is worth more than it is priced... to me anyway. If research is done, one should know that there isn't a single miracle mic that sounds good with everyone's voice, so don't take my word for it... shop around, and if you like this mic, then i definitely suggest getting it asap.

Good Mic

By Chris Cookz

from Southington, CT

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

I have used this microphone for over a year now. It is the first condensor microphone that I have ever used to record and I can honestly say that I am impressed. Having never used anything else I can't say how it compairs, but for my purposes so far it has been great. It very accurately records my voice and when I play it back it sounds good, I'm also using a Yamaha MG10/2 with this mic. I'd suggest getting this mic if you don't have a lot of money as I didn't when I first get this. I'm planning on upgrading in the future when I can afford to, but for the time being this mic works great for me.

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

Hey everyone...I'm just a starting musician, and I bought this mic and this mic only. I now use it for everything. It works great for miking clearly your drums or vocals. Basically, it mics whatever you put it by and it does it well. I had a little trouble with the shockmount at first, but that was the only problem. I strongly recommend this for anyone.

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

I have had it for the last month and I have to say that I'm so impressed with the sound. Clarity, crispy sound in female voice, and the clarity in the lows and mids in male voice. One thing that I like is the easy of use and control of the EQ, very cheap for the value amd quality, a most have for any beginner in the recording or more advanced recording home studios.

The Right Mic

By Odyssey Recordings

Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:

I am a hip hop artist and this is the perfect mic. The sound is great. Other artists that have their own studio come to mine to record because they like the sound the MXL 909 puts out. This really is a great mic for vocals. I haven't tried too many instruments but it really does put out a nice recording.
