As have said in an earlier review these mic work great if you know what you are doing and how to use themSome have said they sound muddy, but in many cases it because they are being used backwards, and that they break up at high SPL, but proper attenuation and or EQ works wonders,I could not believe the sound I got out of them, all are open and airy with good mid and bottom.

This is a tricky subject. This is a good mic for a home studio for the price. That being said, this mic is cheaply built and does not sound balanced. It is very, very bright. Uncontrollable high frequency boost on this thing. I tried to EQ around it on a recording and it just made it sound worse. Sibilance was also a problem here, even with a de-esser.To the amateur home recording enthusiast, you will probably think this mic sounds great. Next to a 58, recorded, it really does sound better. But, for a large diaphragm condenser mic, even in this price range, I would recommend something else. Anyone with experience should be able to hear how skewed the high frequency response is, when compared to higher dollar condensers.

This is a great mic to start out with. I used it for vocal recording. It's a bit muddy an d distorted but for the money you get what you pay for. I say go for it, then later on upgrade when you get more serious in music recording.
Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:
the 909 is a good mic in the right hands and used with the right equipment and technique.Make shure you have it pointing in the right direction (yes boys and girls there is a front and back to some mic's ) or you will get that muddy sound the so many people have talked about, I have scene people try to record with it backwards and try to EQ it.when I tell them turn it around and they do well what else can I say.The 990 is a good mic to have at hand. And it works great for voice over work.
Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:
I have had this mic for a while. If you're a rocker, I would not recommend this mic. Like the guy said earlier too much noise going into it permanently breaks the microphone. I cannot do anything with the mic because of the crackling. It was a good price, but not a very durable mic. Didn't have a very long life span.
Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:
I use this mic for recording guitar amps, and acoustic. Sounds fairly good, a little dark, or muffled. but over all fine! (as long as the SPL's are low!) bad pulsives, but for light vocals, room mics, insturments, you cant beat the price! One problem was with the shockmount, the wing nut on the clamp broke a couple days after recieving it. Thank god for spare nuts and bolts!
Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:
I bought this mic for home studio recording and have had it for about six months. Last week I had to play for a benefit singing and took it to use with my buddy's PA, just in case. Wow, when we used it for live bluegrass like the old days when everybody gathered around the mic to play it rocked the house. I stood out and listened when some of the other bands played and it was just plain awesome. I also use an Art tube pre-amp for the phantom power and the combo really came alive together.
Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:
I'm starting to set up a small home studio where I have been trying to find the best deals where I don't have to spend too much money. When I got this mic I was blown away by the quality. Its very nice to have, especially for vocals. Definitely take a look at this one.P.S. It's a condenser mic so it needs phantom power (+48V) and use a windscreen (pop filter)to prevent you from short circuiting the mic. (thats why people are getting the crackling noise that eventually breaks it)

I just got the MXL 909 last week! The 909 is a really great mic for the price. It's not THE BEST mic you can buy, but I bet it's the best mic you can buy for in this price range. I'm running the 909 through my ART TUBE MP Mic Preamp. You do need to do a little EQing, but for me that's no problem!I would say overall that this is a great condenser mic. GO PICK ONE UP!
Comments about MXL 909 Condenser Microphone:
I am a casual songwriter who produces songs in garage band. I was not happy with muddy vocals from my SM 58, so I bought this mic. I directly compared recordings without effects or EQ, and was amazed by the sound from this mic. Bright, rich, airy, detailed. Do not hesitate buying this as your main microphone for vocals for at-home recording. I am using it with an ART Tube MP Project Series Tube Microphone/Instrument Preamp.
