There has been a lot of " I love it, I hate it" reviews on this mic. I wrote a previous review here when I had the mic for a few months, I have had it now for a year and some change. 1st off, every mic is an individual and must be rated as such. I have had $5000.00 Telefunken's, in good working order, that were simply terrible. This mic is way beyond what has been available in this price range in the past; and is part of the new generation of large capsule condensor mics, (which has been a very small product range even manufactured until the last few years), that don't cost the same as a down payment on a house. For those of us who are used to paying at least a $1000.00 min. for a mic like this, its a bitter sweet pill to swallow. This mic CAN be used to record your album, (with a decent pre-amp), it does have that potential. Unlike your old standard shure sm-57, which does not have that potential (with any mic pre) to record your album. However, like everything else, it must be used with care. To be clear, I really like it, I have used it side by side with the best mics made and it holds up well. There is a bump in the high freq. range around 8 to 10k, but NOT so much as to be way off, you must use a pop screen and a shock mount to record with it and it is a hot MIC that cannot be driven too hard through the pre and mixing board. With all that said, after hearing the results of this mic, from tracking to final CD master on a lot of albums, it is an awesome product. Is it the end all be all of microphones? ... NO! Is it a very useable item in the PROFESSIONAL'S tool box YES If you want to feel like you have the so called "real deal" in a mic, take several thousand dollars and flush it down the nearest toilet. If they charged ten grand for this mic it would be hailed as the newest audio miracle in the studio. I think the low price has a lot of us who are used to being in the exclusive mic owners club, blinded to the potential here. If someone offered to sell you a car,any car, for fifty bucks what would your first thought be? Part of rating a mic is Subjective, What's your opinion | and part of it is Scientific, what does the scope and verious meters say. In all my testing and use I like this mic ... and the actual measurements say that its a savory and way rad item... ;)

At the time of purchase, I was a beginner recorder and had been using dynamic mics for everything. This was my first condenser mic, and years later, I'm still using it. If you're just starting out, it's perfect. It's simple, gets the job done, and can be used for plenty of different situations. I've used it at time for recording both my guitar and vocals at the same time and I've used it for drums. For such a cheap price, it is awesome. BTW- if you're looking to record drums with one mic, hanging this mic above the drum set is not a bad sound. (really, in this method it is good to get another mic for the bass drum)

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:
I'd say its REALLY nice. For those inexperienced in use of these, they DO REQUIRE PHANTOM POWER!!!!! Though Musicians Friend doesn't say (Or didn't when I purchased mine). It does need Phantom. My saving grace from delay was a Behringer 802 mixer (Built in Phantom). Other than that, they are EXCELLENT. Though they do NOT LIKE certain little things. Sometimes they squeal if you get too close or you speak to far away... Other than that they are fine! Love the shockmount, GREAT for recording off and amp on guitar!I own a minor local record company and it works fine!!! I am by no means a "Professional" but I know a good product when i see one. The voice you hear normally is the voice you hear in recordings! Great clarity, though I don't recommend if you plan on giving it a too rough and tumble lifestyle, it seems like it wouldn't do well in a rough place!!! REALLY NICE CARRY CASE!!!

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:
This is an excellent mic -- not only for the price but in generally. It's a cardoid condenser, meaning it requires phantom power and picks-up best from the front. This would mean, it's not as well suited for picking up overhead drums, but it will work. It works well with vocals in an isolation booth. I've owned 3 of these and keep coming back because they do the job well. It's clear, clean and bright. The worst thing I can say is, it's delicate. One fall and that's it. It'll dent and not pickup as well. When it's pristine it'll pickup whatever you want it to pickup. You definitely need a shock mount and a pop-filter. I use this with very high quality gear because it gets the job done. Very happy with them, but keep them away from clumsy/careless musicians.

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:
I replaced my expensive Electro Voice RE20 with this microphone. That's how much I believe in it. The sound is crisp, vibrant, and smooth. You don't lose a ton of dynamic range when you move off axis. It can be used for anything from a talk show (which I do) to vocal performance recording (which I also do). I recently completed five recording sessions with Michael Sadler of Saga, all of which was completed using this microphone. He sounded amazing. You can't go wrong buying this. There are a ton of YouTube videos featuring this mic, so take a look at those. Be careful, though. Some of the people on YouTube are speaking into the microphone from the wrong side, so their reviews should be ignored.

One of, if not the, best price to performance microphones you'll ever find. Sounds great and the included case and accessories make it feel like you paid a lot more than you really did. I like them so much I bought two.

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:
There are so many reviews on this mic, and here's what I found. On vocals it sounds very similar to a TLM-103. I was very surprised. It however sounds a little to "in a can" like (scooped) in the mid range to use on guitar amps. But once again for this price point, anyone with a good mic pre can end up with a great sounding vocal track with this mic.If you have a reasonable selection of mics this will probably NOT be your go to mic, but you definitely will find a use or voice that fits it pretty well. Buy this mic.....

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:
I typically record all my band practices, one room condensor mic (USB) that grabs the drums, does great and another mic to get the bass amp/tube amp I play through simultaneously in a two-piece. I read the reviews for this mic and thought it would work well for recording the amps as it was highly recommended for live/home recording. Its NOT
This is a sensitive mic that HAS to have PHANTOM POWER, so some sort of device needs to be purchased in addition to power this needy thing. For home recording and live recording etc, I want to plug this thing in and have it immediately pick up a single. NOPE. plugged it into my ASIO Lexion Alpha sound card XLR, which was suppose to be phantom powered in the XLR input, IT DID NOT WORK.
Finally returned it and got a Blue Microphone Snowball, USB mic. Phantom power in this day and age is an annoyance. Need to some sort of 48 volt powered mixer garbage. I suppose this mic would work well for someone who's has a lot of mic equipment to work with. But for mobile home recording/live recording its absolutely useless

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:
It's pretty hard to beat the MXL 990 when it comes to value and quality. It certainly does what a good microphone is supposed to do and it makes for very accurate, clear sounding recordings. Quite versatile, it works well for both vocals and instruments alike.
