OVERVIEW

Large diaphragm, little price.

The MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with shock mount has a silky, sweet high end while retaining tight, solid low and midrange reproduction. The 3/4" gold-sputtered diaphragm creates a professional sound suited for digital and analog recording. Attractive vintage body style with champagne finish. The 30Hz-20kHz frequency response is ideal for lead and background vocal, male or female. Includes custom shock mount, mic stand adapter, and case. Remember folks, this mic requires phantom power, so make sure your console or interface delivers it before ordering.

There are a bazillion studio vocal mics on the market that break the magical $100 barrier, a traditionally unheard of price point for a studio vocal mic. Once that price floor was demolished, however, the market became flooded with offerings in the $80 - $100 price range. MXL has emerged as a true leader in this market, and the MXL990 is MXL's flagship product in that category. If a well-built, good-sounding, versatile studio microphone for less than $100 sounds like a good fit for your current needs, you can't go wrong with the MXL990.

There has been a lot of " I love it, I hate it" reviews on this mic. I wrote a previous review here when I had the mic for a few months, I have had it now for a year and some change. 1st off, every mic is an individual and must be rated as such. I have had $5000.00 Telefunken's, in good working order, that were simply terrible. This mic is way beyond what has been available in this price range in the past; and is part of the new generation of large capsule condensor mics, (which has been a very small product range even manufactured until the last few years), that don't cost the same as a down payment on a house. For those of us who are used to paying at least a $1000.00 min. for a mic like this, its a bitter sweet pill to swallow. This mic CAN be used to record your album, (with a decent pre-amp), it does have that potential. Unlike your old standard shure sm-57, which does not have that potential (with any mic pre) to record your album. However, like everything else, it must be used with care. To be clear, I really like it, I have used it side by side with the best mics made and it holds up well. There is a bump in the high freq. range around 8 to 10k, but NOT so much as to be way off, you must use a pop screen and a shock mount to record with it and it is a hot MIC that cannot be driven too hard through the pre and mixing board. With all that said, after hearing the results of this mic, from tracking to final CD master on a lot of albums, it is an awesome product. Is it the end all be all of microphones? ... NO! Is it a very useable item in the PROFESSIONAL'S tool box YES If you want to feel like you have the so called "real deal" in a mic, take several thousand dollars and flush it down the nearest toilet. If they charged ten grand for this mic it would be hailed as the newest audio miracle in the studio. I think the low price has a lot of us who are used to being in the exclusive mic owners club, blinded to the potential here. If someone offered to sell you a car,any car, for fifty bucks what would your first thought be? Part of rating a mic is Subjective, What's your opinion | and part of it is Scientific, what does the scope and verious meters say. In all my testing and use I like this mic ... and the actual measurements say that its a savory and way rad item... ;)

I bought this mic because of how much I've heard about it, and seeing it for cheap(59). Already own an MXL 4000, C 3000b, AT4050, and a ton of cheap stuff for my homestudio.

I can't say it's a horrible mic, can't even say you're not getting bang4buk with this on a budget. Sounds great with guitar recordings. With tweaking you can get phenominal vocals. I'm talking a noise gate, LPF/HPF and EQing. But other mics I own just sound better with less tweaking.

As for others saying the mids are harsh, a quick EQ and filter can fix that. I recommend this to anyone on a budget who wants a quick decent quality fix to a mic that sounds TOO CHEAP. But if you can throw in a little more money, you get options like the AT2020 or AKG Perception 120 that I beleive are better choices. This mic does have a great way of capturing hip hop vocals that can make for a 90s sound if correctly mixed. Mind you, I'm running it through a Presonus Audiobox, so it's not like i'm reviewing running things thru the best Pre in the world. I could also see it flourishing with the right pre, maybe Focusrites' ISA series.

If you already own a few cheaper mics(100-200 range), this would make a great addition. But if you've spent over 350 for a tool or 2 in your arsenal, this will fall short.

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:

I've owned this microphone for several years now, and for a long time had a sort of "I'll just use a dynamic mic for recording because this thing is too much work" and I had always seemed to have serious issues with volume and having it pick up literally every little sound in the studio. That being said, that was several years ago before I knew anything about gain staging and proper recording technique and all that. For someone who is relatively experienced (I am by no means an expert) this mic is a gem for the price.

Vocals and Harmonica are all I've used it for an all I've found it incredibly useful for, but it excels in recording both. It delivers are great range as far as vocals go, though it seems to drop little nuances, particularly with raspy voices. However for clear voices, this thing really does the trick. It really does well with rounded off singing, and delivers a clean sound that is easy to mix.

For Harmonica its pretty crisp if you keep your distance. It definitely needs a pop filter in any circumstance (seriously, even for amplifiers if you try to mic one up) because it does clip and pop if there is a lot of air movement. Also, knowing which side is the front helps a lot too (guess who didn't read the instructions and thought it was bidirectional).

Overall its a great work horse for vocals, I've recorded most of an album with it and it's great for isolated vocals and harmonica. It does pickup a lot of background noise so know that if you own pets that make a lot of noise or have any people around with you who are a bit loud. Once again, for the money, it doesn't get much better. SM57's and SM58's won't deliver the quality that this will in a home studio if it's used right. Plus the shock mount and case are really nice given it feels a little fragile.(it definitely needs to be on the shock mount because it picks up movement in the stand really bad without it). I would definitely recommend to semi-experienced people in a home studio.

This is a really good sounding mic. I have been using it mostly for vocals, but I have also used to to sweeten my Bass recording by adding the mic to the DI mix.

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:

I use this mic for podcasting and I love the quality sound that I get from this mic. It is a condenser, so it will pick up background noise, but if you have a quiet place to record you'll be impressed with this mic. It feels sturdy, and the shock mount holds it extremely well.
One thing to make sure of is that when you are buying a stand is that it will fit it. The shock mount takes a larger diameter screw mount, and if you use a plastic adapter, it may not hold up well and can be easily overtightened, messing up the plastic threads.

Yes, this mike is a bit bulky and weighty, but makes up for such deficits with excellent signal output bandwidth and amplitude. Not only do you get the awesome signal bandwidth condensers are known for, but this mike has very high input sensitivity across the very wide frequency range. An excellent buy at twice the price!!

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:

Starting to rebuild my mic collection and Got this when it was on sale and so far I am extremely happy with this mic. I have used it on my acoustic and found a few great applications already. Example: close mic'd at 12th Fret slightly off axis, close mic'd slightly behind the bridge, three feet back from the sound hole pulling in room sounds, all great sounds so far. I can't sing well but I tested vocals out as best as I could ha! Sounded very clear and crisp without being tinny. Also heard lots of bass and low mids which was surprising. At one time I owned a Shure KSM32 champagne and to be honest I struggled to get the sounds I was looking for but this budget mic is nailing it so far. I need to try this out on my amp and various cabs at low to moderate volume (Blackstar HT5 with Laney Cub Cab 2X12 open back, Fender 4X12 closed back, Music Man 65 1X15 closed back) could use a db cut switch but I'm sure that would bump the price up. Not sure how this would react with a decent mic preamp but I'm sure it works well. Pick this up on sale and you won't be disappointed. Came with case, shock mount and regular mount. FYI if you purchase now make sure you ask for price adjustment during Black Friday sale.

I bought this to record Guitar, Mandolin, Banjo, and Voice. It picks everything up beautifully. The mic is very responsive (you'll want a very quiet room). I compared this to two relatively inexpensive dynamic microphones. I recorded first with the dynamic mics in stereo panned to each side. It sounded pretty good. It sounded like it was on the radio and had quite a bit of constant noise. Then I recorded with the MXL 990. There was no audible noise. Rather than sounding like the radio, it sounded like it was in the room. I love it. Picks up a lot of nuances.
