There has been a lot of " I love it, I hate it" reviews on this mic. I wrote a previous review here when I had the mic for a few months, I have had it now for a year and some change. 1st off, every mic is an individual and must be rated as such. I have had $5000.00 Telefunken's, in good working order, that were simply terrible. This mic is way beyond what has been available in this price range in the past; and is part of the new generation of large capsule condensor mics, (which has been a very small product range even manufactured until the last few years), that don't cost the same as a down payment on a house. For those of us who are used to paying at least a $1000.00 min. for a mic like this, its a bitter sweet pill to swallow. This mic CAN be used to record your album, (with a decent pre-amp), it does have that potential. Unlike your old standard shure sm-57, which does not have that potential (with any mic pre) to record your album. However, like everything else, it must be used with care. To be clear, I really like it, I have used it side by side with the best mics made and it holds up well. There is a bump in the high freq. range around 8 to 10k, but NOT so much as to be way off, you must use a pop screen and a shock mount to record with it and it is a hot MIC that cannot be driven too hard through the pre and mixing board. With all that said, after hearing the results of this mic, from tracking to final CD master on a lot of albums, it is an awesome product. Is it the end all be all of microphones? ... NO! Is it a very useable item in the PROFESSIONAL'S tool box YES If you want to feel like you have the so called "real deal" in a mic, take several thousand dollars and flush it down the nearest toilet. If they charged ten grand for this mic it would be hailed as the newest audio miracle in the studio. I think the low price has a lot of us who are used to being in the exclusive mic owners club, blinded to the potential here. If someone offered to sell you a car,any car, for fifty bucks what would your first thought be? Part of rating a mic is Subjective, What's your opinion | and part of it is Scientific, what does the scope and verious meters say. In all my testing and use I like this mic ... and the actual measurements say that its a savory and way rad item... ;)

I bought this mic because of how much I've heard about it, and seeing it for cheap(59). Already own an MXL 4000, C 3000b, AT4050, and a ton of cheap stuff for my homestudio.

I can't say it's a horrible mic, can't even say you're not getting bang4buk with this on a budget. Sounds great with guitar recordings. With tweaking you can get phenominal vocals. I'm talking a noise gate, LPF/HPF and EQing. But other mics I own just sound better with less tweaking.

As for others saying the mids are harsh, a quick EQ and filter can fix that. I recommend this to anyone on a budget who wants a quick decent quality fix to a mic that sounds TOO CHEAP. But if you can throw in a little more money, you get options like the AT2020 or AKG Perception 120 that I beleive are better choices. This mic does have a great way of capturing hip hop vocals that can make for a 90s sound if correctly mixed. Mind you, I'm running it through a Presonus Audiobox, so it's not like i'm reviewing running things thru the best Pre in the world. I could also see it flourishing with the right pre, maybe Focusrites' ISA series.

If you already own a few cheaper mics(100-200 range), this would make a great addition. But if you've spent over 350 for a tool or 2 in your arsenal, this will fall short.

This is a steal to get the case and everything. If your making your own home studio buy this mic.
Does exactly what it says it will do.
For the price I am a fan of these products now and would try all of their microphones!
I don't think you can beat the high quality recordings you can do with this mic.

Awesome

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:

This mic is excellent. It's rich, it's open, it breathes. It makes my AKG C1000 S sound as dull as a dynamic. Combine with the (equally great value) ART Tube MP mic pre, and you've got some silky, warm, beautiful vocal tracks for extremely cheap. Considering the price I'm not sure why you haven't ordered one yet.

MXL 990 with Shockmount

By patrick johnson

from Maryland

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:

This microphone, some say, is great for the price. I contend it is a great mic, period. I've used Sennheiser mics before that sounded flat and without as much range. This mic sounds totally natural and has a warm life to it that totally transcends my deep baritone voice. It sounds great in ProTools without any EQ, or pluggins. In Garageband, it is a little low, but then I am not as familiar with Garageband, as a whole, and I am sure it can be made to sound just as fantastic (or close). I honestly think that people need to get over brand names. Although, you have to trust a brand and it only usually gets its reputation for the right reasons. However, my point is that you should not judge this mic on, as some would say, being ok for the brand it is and the price. It is a great mic, period, and one that cannot be overlooked for the price. It sure can't be overlooked for the quality. Range of sound is everything. This sounds fantastic.

**I initially could not get the mic working, and I called to see about tech support. Something told me, though, that my MBox somehow was the problem. It wasn't the Mbox, itself, but the USP port it was connected to on my MacBook Pro. Switching ports solved everything. If anyone ever experiences total static when connecting this mic, it might not be the mic, or the XLR cable; it might be your phantom power source, or even how that's connected to your computer. I'm only putting that here for help to anyone who may ever come across with something like this. It's not the mic's fault, however, so this is an unrelated addendum

I have a small studio for samples and demos. This is the only mic I use. I bought it here on this website about 1.5yrs ago, and it's never let me down since, and I don't plan on replacing it anytime soon. Just remember to use phantom power.

I have owned one MXL 990 for a few years and used it my home studio. I was always impressed with the sound production , great warm vocals and clear tones on the guitar.

I am part of a 6 member acoustic band and we started using my 990 as a single mic setup, we all fell in love with how the mic makes us sound and it's so easy to work behind. We now have 2 of them and they have stood up very well with being on the road and standing on top of a straight mic stand with no shockmounts..|I would give it 10 stars if there were that many to give.

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:

Overall if you are starting out in recording this mic is a must have. It's perfect for a first vocal condenser and your results won't be half bad considering the price paid. Just don't be afraid to really tweak the EQ as needed (and it will be needed).
It's a condenser mic, nothing else really to it. No multi-patterns, no pad, no low cut. Just a standard mic.
Talking build quality, it is quite robust. Talking sound quality, I have actually done some very good vocal takes with it in the past. It does require quite a bit of EQ'ing to get the right sound, and that why it costs as little as it does. There are many better sounding mics, but not with this price tag.
Value is what this microphone's selling point is. You can get some great results if you have a good ear for tuning an EQ. In my experience I had to cut a lot of lows and boost the highs intensely for a male tenor voice. It's always good to try and find the right mic for an application that doesn't need EQing, but if this mic is in your price range, then that's likely not possible. It will get you great results for it's low cost.

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:

    See above review
I've used the EV RE20 exclusively over the years, and after trying this mic out in my studio, I'm flabbergasted as to how they can afford to manufacture such a quality piece for such a bargain-basement price. The key to this mic is a decent pre-amp. It's warm and responsive and sounds really smooth across all frequencies. I am using an old ART tube MP to warm it up even more and I can't believe the sound. Remember, you'll need phantom power to make this transformless platform work, and quite a bit of gain for the pre-amp section, so make sure your stuff is fairly quiet. The ART tube MP I have is really quiet, however I have friends who've had them and they aren't as quiet as mine. Nonetheless, for the price with the two combined, you have an excellent starting point for relatively very little capital. For those sophisticates who would look down their noses at anything without a Neumann logo on it, you don't know what you're missing. I sold all of my expensive stuff and took the family on vacation!

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:

At the time of purchase, I was a beginner recorder and had been using dynamic mics for everything. This was my first condenser mic, and years later, I'm still using it. If you're just starting out, it's perfect. It's simple, gets the job done, and can be used for plenty of different situations. I've used it at time for recording both my guitar and vocals at the same time and I've used it for drums. For such a cheap price, it is awesome. BTW- if you're looking to record drums with one mic, hanging this mic above the drum set is not a bad sound. (really, in this method it is good to get another mic for the bass drum)

Decent vocal mic too but does need a lot of eq.
I would buy it again. You can't go wrong for the $$$$$

A good mic for the pirce

    By A.Bowen

Comments about MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with Shockmount:

I bought this mic because there was a really great sale on it at the time. I was reluctant at first due to the low cost but it turns out this is a gem for the price. I have run this mic on my ProTools Mbox system for over a year now in my humble home studio and it performed satisfactory with every voice I have put it up against. If you are looking to purchase this as your first mic I would defiantly recommend this if you are on a budget as a great starting point for your collection. I also ran this mic on a PTHD setup at a local professional studio (the engineer there picked one up the same time I did and wanted to try it out) and it performed great. He has since used it on a few projects I think mainly because it?s funny to him that he is getting away with using such an inexpensive mic in such a high dollar facility without complaints.

I tried this mic head to head with an akg 414 TLII and this little mic held its ground rather well. A lot brighter than the 414 and not as responsive from a few feet, it has more of a hypercardiod pattern. This is a very nice mic, and comparing it to the 414 isn't quite fair, now is it?

This phantom powered condenser mic ROCKS!
Love the look and the feel of this mic. Be sure to get a pop filter to protect this little gem.
The value is great on this mic. You get GREAT vocal sounds at a GREAT price. My band is on a budget and this mic doesn't sacrifice quality for low price.

So if you're an amateur to semi-pro musician recording a CD to sell on the gig, the MXL990 works well.

Unless you have a preamp of some sort, this is more than likely going to be too quite on it's own. I'm running an Mbox w/ Prol Tools 8, & I have to turn up the gain more than half, still standing 5" from the mic, & I'm not a quite person. The frequency chart is not at all accurate in my opinion, but I guess you could say it's something decent to start with.
          none.
          seems like a good build.
