I've had my 990s for a couple of years. It's my go-to microphone for performances.
The 10dB pad lets me use it on a noisey stage or pick up the quietest sounds in a room while recording.
Apparently I've picked up the right mixers (Crate and Yamaha) My microphone pre-amps work very well with the MXL.
Some judical adjustment to make sure my gain control is near the middle of it's range and I'm good to go with a clean clear sound.
The roll off switch is good for getting rid of low frequency vibrations, fans, and motors in the background...
It's sensitive to mic stand noise, so using the isolating holder is best if performers are going to be active. Works well in the solid clamp in a studio setting.
I'll probably be getting another one soon.
I'm looking forward to haveing a pair for stereo recording on location.

I think the MXL 990s is a good entry level condensor mic. I can afford better but I want to stay in line with the rest of my recording gear. There's no sense in buying a $1000.00 mic and running it into a $200.00 preamp. My only complaint is that the "T" bolt used to tighten the angle adjustment stripped out after only two adjustments. Needs coarser threads.

Comments about MXL 990s Condenser Microphone:
When people complain about a mic it is usually inexperience that yields the negative review. Learning proximity and preamp techniques is as important as the mic itself. This mic can deliver at an incredible price. No mic makes a song for you. You still need your imagination, your patience. I have pulled off some nice field recordings with this mic coupled with an A.R.T. Tube MP pre. That pre is totally affordable. PATIENCE FRIENDS. This mic is definitely worth it. The shock mount that it is equipped with was suspect. It needs some love and tweaking but it will work. I actually employ 3 of these and they are consistent performers.

Comments about MXL 990s Condenser Microphone:
In my opinion this is the best home studio recording mic for the money. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of other great mics out there. Yet with the 990s you get a hard carrying case, a shock mount, a hard clip mount. Plus is come with a -10 db pad and a low cut. Getting those features for $80.00 is a great deal! Buy one now, and you won't be disappointed

Comments about MXL 990s Condenser Microphone:
I used this mic for some time (and not only in studio, but on little stage too). Very smooth and warm sound for this price. Only minus that the mic has one direction (hyper cardiod) and little bit smaller diaphragm than 2". But for this price mic is awsome.
Comments about MXL 990s Condenser Microphone:
have used this mic in all types of conditions and if outside and wind is a issue like plow hand 247 from sc. stated I use a coffe cup cover made out of sterofome and it works good in windy conitions and don't hurt the sound much at all just can't say enough good about the mic only know what you are trying to do it is a one mic for a group to work to watch Ronda VincentI'm sure her mic cost a lot more but this is the same use
Comments about MXL 990s Condenser Microphone:
I just received my 990s and I love it. Great voice reproduction. It even makes this old crow sound good. I use it with a Marshall acoustic amp and a Taylor guitar( sometimes with my HD28 Martin. I am going to go with this on all my gigs unless wind is an issue. Couldn't be happier with this mic.
Comments about MXL 990s Condenser Microphone:
I doodle around with computer based recording and know that it takes thousands to get a studio like sound. I also know that my stage mics are for beans for recording. Quite surprised with this mic. good value. Don't know how it will stand up but I don't intend to abuse it. Got the pre amp. Yeah, that helps a lot. Thinking of getting one of the other models for guitar and bass. Anyway. Funstuff
Comments about MXL 990s Condenser Microphone:
The mic does its job, i am by no means incredibly discerning about it. However the shockmount won't hold up to the most gentle use. Especially when mounted upside down for an overhead drumset application. The band won't stay on the handles and the entire frame is bent. Just use the swivel mount that comes with it.
