I purchased two of these from Musicians Friend about 4 years ago based on the plethora of overwhelmingly positive reviews (not sure where they are now) and the price. Trust me when I tell you there used to be over 500 if not more, glowing reviews about this wonderful little workhorse.
I have only used them for recording, never live work, so I'm strictly coming from a recording standpoint. In my home studio I was using the standard 58's for vocals until I brought the MXL 990's into the mix and I haven't looked back. Night and day. No question about it. These mics are incredibly sensitive and (along with a little ART tube pre amp) provide warmth and depth to any voice I've put in front of it.
I've used this mic to capture lead vox, background vox, room ambiance, acoustic guitar, podcasts and voice over work and they have never failed me. In fact, one is still brand new in the box. Never used it.
If you are in the market for a great sounding condenser mic (it will need Phantom Power) for your home studio use and don't have a lot of money to spend I cannot recommend this mic highly enough. The mic comes with a shockmount and its own plastic hardshell carrying case for easy transport and storage. Will it out-perform the grand-daddy of condenser mics? I have no idea but I'm not willing to spend over $1K to find out.

Your have to be very careful not to knock it or get any moisture into it to prevent damage. I found the guitar was a little boomy, and we had to set the mic higher above the guitar to prevent that from happening.
Wonderful sound, very sensitive, you can sing softly and it will pick up your voice easily.
Very crisp and clear sound.
I feel we paid a fair price "on sale".
