This is a fairly large microphone, although not as large and heavy as the MXL 960 or the Genesis. Nonetheless, I would suggest it be mounted on a secure stand with a low center of gravity. The 992 comes supplied with a shock mount, which will also work with the MXL 99 however, the shock mount that comes with the 990 shouldn?t be used with the 992, as the width of the band on the 990 shock mount is not wide enough to properly secure the 992. It also comes with a nice case for transporting and storing the mic.The MXL 992 comes with 10db pad for handling instruments with high SPL?s as well as a low-cut switch to mitigate proximity effect on close-in vocals. The 992 has sonic qualities that are similar to the 990, but with a smoother midrange and a more robust bottom end. This may be due, in part, to the larger capsule of the 992. Overall, I like this microphone very much and would not hesitate to use it for any application where I would use the MXL 990. In fact, I would be more inclined to use the MXL 992 on instruments with a "thick" sound such as French horn or baritone sax.

I'm fairly sure this review won't be posted, but I wanted to save anyone else the expense of this crappy mike. It feeds back to the amp from six miles away, but you have to be practically on top of it to get any sound out of it at all. I'm very unhappy with the product.

Amazing Microphone

By Jay aka "The Bearded Drummer"

from Lynchburg, Virginia

Pros

  • Amazing Sound, both higs and lows
  • Crisp clear for acoustic guitars and percussion
  • Solid Product

Cons

    Best Uses

I've been a musician for 16 years and I have owned microphones for everything. Ive recording acoustic drums with triggering, manufactured drum microphones and I dont get the sound I get with this guy. Throw a tent over a bass drum setup or use throughout the set and you wont be disappointed. To record practice or demo's, I use only one positioned in the middle above my drum set and I tell you the quality is superb. Best mic i've ever owned and that includes these new overpriced Blue microphones

      MXL 990 Great Sounding Microphone

      By Johnny B.

      from Laval, Canada

This MXL 990 is a Very Good Microphone and being very affordable makes it a sweeter buy. If you follow advices and good sense, After 4 years, still sounds as good as when I originally purchased it. Is it the greatest mic out there, well no, but then, no mic excels at all applications. I have recorded a Classical Guitar session (having a matched pair) Going through my Presonus Sound Card and a Popular Pre-amp emulator, the result surpassed my expectations. Buy without worries!

      MXL 992...not bad :)

      By Yank Inches

      from Pontiac, Mi

This mic is great for the price. I use it for vocals and acoustic guitars. The only problem I have had so far with that and the pencil mic that came with it free is a bit of hiss...ESPECIALLY when you turn the volume up on it. I think that could be my mixer though, other then that it's awesome and gives incredible sound ranges.

      Vocal or Instrumental???

      By Vadier

      from Gulf Breeze, FL

I have been using this microphone for a while on acoustic guitars, amps, vocals, and pretty much everything else (which is pretty amazing in itself). The only problem is that if i have a real strong vocalist come in my studio, they over power this microphone by itself... yes, by itself!!! Which means you should just go ahead and buy two of them and and set one on top up-side-down and one regularly, and direct them at a forty five degree angle with each other. This creates a stereo effect and poof, it sounds great... or you can just up grade to the better, more expensive microphones!!! :P

      Budget Mic

      By Freenaps

      from DC

This product is great for the price. You get what you need. My only gripe is the shock mount... it seems a little cheap and easily breakable. (So be careful) Other than that I am happy with my purchase!

      Simply Amazing

      By zombiehunter

      from USA

Wow. Where to start. I bought this mike to record vocals, guitar, and piano. It is incredible. I have used several mikes (dynamic and condenser) to record my acoustic guitar, but none compare to the MXL 992. It is much better for guitar than the MXL 990 because it has the low frequency roll off. The MXL 990 makes the guitar sound muddy, but as soon as plug in the 992 and turn on the rolloff switch, it sounds crisp, clean and exactly how the an acoustic sounds in real life. If you take proper care of it, it will last a long time.

Sounds great but build quality's got issues

      By JesseGimbel

      from Philadelphia, PA

I've had this mic for about a year and a half. The sound is incredible, and I can't believe I don't hear of more people using these. While it does have a bump in the high end, overall the mic is very smooth. The only problem is that at one point, it just stopped working altogether. No abuse, nothing, just stopped. Sent it in for repair because (thank god) I got the warranty, came back, worked fine. Then a few months later it did the same thing. Called to get a return authorization, and they said they could only repair it once, which makes it pretty useless. Somehow it started working again not long after, and last time I checked it works, but now the hinge of the shockmount cracked and split in half. The sound is great, but it's got definite build issue.
