OVERVIEW

Application-specific drum condenser microphone.

The Drum Cube Pro is the perfect solution for capturing or recording overheads and toms, but also snare and kick drums too. The microphone is also versatile enough to be used for vocals. The Drum Cube Pro provides a 6-micron gold sputtered diaphragm and a 20Hz-20kHz frequency range. Kick drum placement is made possible thanks to its 140dB SPL range. The small design of the Drum Cube Pro allows tight placement between drums. Each microphone comes with hardmount clip and pouch.

Overall I would recommend this mic to anybody neededing a good all-around drum mic. The construction quality of this mic is surprisingly good.
The audio quality on this mic is great. I've used it as a room mic, Hi hat mic, Overhead, Snare, Tom, pretty much everything. It holds up well under all circumstances.
This Mic is one of the heaviest mics I've ever had. It's built extremely tough. the only thing I'm not crazy about is the clip that comes with it, I feel like it could have been designed a little better. This is only a minor concern overall.
Great bang for the buck mic, can't match the quality and weight of it for the price.

I bought one of these after a few years of wanting to try one. I'm always looking for a good condenser with a tight cardioid pattern for drums. I ordered one, tried it out and low and behold it can't handle the spl's of a drum. Obviously being a drum mic it should be able to handle the sound pressure a drum produces, so I assume it's damaged. I email MXL's service department and get absolutely zero help. Their service department is AWFUL, rude and disrespectful. I am an audio engineer by trade and I obviously know how to use a condenser microphone, but that was what the RUDE woman I spoke to kept implying. I was also told that if the microphone was not damaged I would be responsible for paying for shipping and assessment. This was before they even looked at the mic. Long story short, I punched the mic and threw it in a closet. DONT BUY THEIR PRODUCTS. Look at the reviews of Rode mics on Sweetwater and you'll find a whole lot of cooperation from their service department.

Comments about MXL Drum Cube Pro:

This microphone is perhaps the most versatile microphone I have used to date for its price range. I was looking for a better quality microphone to capture the "bottom end" on my 20" bass drum. I have a Shure Beta52a internally mounted with a resonant front head with no hole. The drum cube pro more than just caught the bottom end on the bass drum. Placed just a few feet away from the resonant head of the bass drum, I could immediately hear a nice low end sound also coming from my larger toms. This microphone is so well "tuned" and sensitive that just listening to my kit through this microphone alone was pleasing to my ears. I have some cheaper Samson condenser microphones I am using for overheads, but as soon as I can afford to do so, I'll be replacing those microphones with this product. I could very well imagine this microphone being used to close mic toms, but using these to capture the overall sound of the kit would seem to be most efficient. Again, worth the price for the quality you get!!

Comments about MXL Drum Cube Pro:

Can't go wrong for the on sale price. Tends to pick up lots of bleed from the drums in general. But to be fair I'm still working with the pair I set up on my rack and floor tom. They are pretty heavy. So make sure you have a durable stand.

Comments about MXL Drum Cube Pro:

I have used a few MXL mics and have pleasantly surprised by the sound and quality. I've bought MXL mics with the intent on modding them but decided to keep them stock because I was so pleased with the sound. This mic is no exception. It has a true 1" gold-sputtered diaphragm so it will pick up more low end than a smaller diaphragm but it does have a wider cardioid pattern, so keep that in mind. I've used it on floor toms and the outside kick microphone and it performed perfectly. Clear, distortion-free and great fidelity. It lacks pad or low-cut switches but in my mind, if you have those options with your mic pres, it's not a big deal. Upon reading the spec sheet, I have to be honest, this is a pretty standard cardioid condenser mic. The frequency response is very similar to my c414 or other LDC's I've used. Aside from the near-bullet-proof case it is in, I don't see what is "drum specific" about this mic. It does exactly what a large diaphragm FET condenser should do. I suppose it would work just as well on guitar amps, bass cabs, room mics and vocals, as it does drums. It's well worth twice what I paid for this thing. The 3-year warrantee that MXL offers is a no-brainer. Pick it up!

In particular, I use the Cube Pro for the floor tom and the Cube's for the toms. I also own three MD 421 but for some reason I like these ones more. Lately I found myself using more the Cube's than the MD!!
