OVERVIEW

Classic side-address design, great studio vocal mic.

The MXL 5000 is a classic condenser microphone wrapped in modern metallic blue and silver. The 5000s large diaphragm capsule has a cardioid polar pattern, with a -10db pad and low frequency roll-off. Deep voices and low instruments sound smooth and clear. The 5000 is a solid state microphone designed with a similar rich sound and tonal quality to well-known classic German microphones. The polar pattern is remarkably steady and flat, allowing great freedom to shape vocals in the mix. The MXL 5000 makes high end sound affordable for everyone.

I received this yesterday after a short time waiting on free shipping (three days, not too shabby). Initial impressions are positive. It is packaged well and comes with a very sturdy shockmount. A small negative, it has no permanent case which most of my other mics come with.
I tested this mic on a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2. using Mogami gold Nuetrik XLR with a clear signal path.
My impression is this mic has a lot of bottom end, which the included frequency response graph does not indicate. At close proximity it is boomy and grainy, not unlike other MXL mics I've tested. Flipping the High Pass Filter switch dramatically changes the game. This mic retains a warm, grainy character similar to Rode tube mics with a pleasant pickup to both my awful singing and acoustic guitar. My personal taste, which is quite irrelevant in your situation, is that I have other mics I would generally prefer for singing or guitars (everyone should have an SM7B and C414).
Utilizing the -10dB cut shows another possibility as a very tasty room mic for drumkits. I can see this being a primary use for this microphone going forward in my studio. The fact that it's not bright in character really lets my cymbals shine rather than ring.
So my final advice is this: if you're looking to buy one, get two and hang em' high.

Comments about MXL 5000 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

I was looking to purchase another condenser microphone for my home studio. I'm extremely pleased with this purchase. It looks great and sounds even better. I've only used it a few times so far, but i can tell a big difference between the 5000 and my mxl 990. They both sound good but in different ways. The 5000 has a much warmer sound. Plus with MF putting it as the stupid deal of the day I would have been stupid not to have bought it! Thanks MF!

Solid mic for studio use.

Comments about MXL 5000 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

At this price point, I am very pleased with this microphone. It compares favorably to my other studio mics, some of which were four times the price of this one. I have a few male vocalists whose voices seems crystal clear, smooth, and perfectly balanced in this microphone. For females and other vocals, a little bit of eq'ing and you are good. It has also done really well on acoustic instruments, primarily guitar and mandolin. It is really receptive to shaping the tone and provides a good, "true-to-life" sound.

Comments about MXL 5000 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

Can't tell you how pleased I am with this mic for vocals. For the price I was not expecting this type of performance. I have a few tube mics, and lots of FET condenser mics, as well,as dynamics of all kinds. I've even gone back and rerecorded some vocal with it that for whatever reason I thought were "thin", this mic rocks.

Comments about MXL 5000 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

I bought this mic so that I could record guitar and vocals in a higher quality fashion. I bought this having read some reviews and just basically hoping it would do the trick. I'm not disappointed. In fact, the sound quality is VERY high and for the price I think it's an enormous value. Perhaps a professional or an audiophile would find something to take issue with - other than it being a bit large and heavy (it keeps tipping my boom stand), it's a great piece I would buy again.

      Best Uses

      • Baritone vocal

Comments about MXL 5000 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

This is a great mic for baritones. Sounds very smooth and warm with little EQ needed. I used a quality pop filter which adds a bit more smoothness. Also works on acoustic guitar from a slight distance (I usually mic from head-height about 1 foot back to get the room effect and blend with a DI track). When compared to much higher end vocal mic's this holds its own, not as detailed but perfect for some material. Good to have in the mic locker as an option for baritones. If you are on budget, you could pay far more for a much worse sounding mic, so why not give it a try? :-)

      Very good when on sale

      Pros

      • Good sensitivity
      • Wide frequency response

      Cons

Comments about MXL 5000 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

I bought this MXL 5000 on a black Friday sale and it is great for the price I paid. I've never seen a mic this good at that price. I would not pay full price for this, though. Rather than pay full price for this 5000, the Rode NT1-A would be noticeably better for a bit more money, even though the NT1-A does not have the pad or HPF. This mic has characteristics that might really need the pad and HPF, so it is good that they are there. I thought I noticed a low frequency rumble noise when sitting in a quiet studio on the shock mount with the pre-amp turned up, but it's hard to be sure if something else may have caused that. This type of mic is incredibly sensitive to low frequencies.
The NT1-A has much lower self-noise (one of the lowest you can buy), so it is much cleaner for delicate details in low sound levels and as such has a wider dynamic range. The NT1-A also has a much cleaner and deeper low frequency range.
You'll not likely ever see the NT1-A on sale at anywhere as low of a price as this MXL 5000 sometimes gets down to.
I'd also be torn between this and a Blue Spark if they were at the same price. The Spark doesn't have as wide of a frequency response, but it will likely translate punchy dynamics better than the MXL 5000 - they are mics with different character, so it depends what you need if choosing between the 5000 and the Spark if paying a similar price.

Comments about MXL 5000 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

I use this mic for a one-mic setup for bluegrass. It's a solid mic, punches above its weight on sound, has been reliable, and is not so expensive that you are worried about traveling with it. However, I did learn my lesson on buying scratch and dent items. I bought a second one that was supposedly inspected by Musicians Friend and assigned mint status. When I unsealed the box, the whole diaphragm and top part of the mic was loose in the wire mesh and rattled around. I immediately returned it. Great customer service by Musicians Friend on the return but I doubt I will trust their open box stuff again.

Comments about MXL 5000 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone:

I use it as part of a pair to mic a bluegrass and gospel ensemble of 5. It provides excellent coverage and accurate sound. The EQ fits our female vocalist well and does not require much tinkering. Picks up a double bass really well while also not allowing the mandolin to be drowned out. For the money, I think it is a great option.
