This is my second ribbon mic. I also have a Nady RSM 2. They sound similar with this one edging out the Nady. I love the mellow sound this mic yields and how you can drastically change the tone by tipping the mic forward or cupping the back side with your hand. Sounds great as a vocal mic and can really "calm down" an acoustic 12 string guitar.

I've had the pleasure of using the MXL R77 for about a month now. Having previously used a Royer 121 and a sE RNR1 I know how a high end ribbon mic should sound, and to be honest for $399 the R77 is a steal. Sounding more like a Royer than the RNR1 this mic truly captures all the round warmth you want from a ribbon. I use it mostly on electric guitars running into a Blue Robbie Mic pre and it really shines giving you a full creamy tone. I'm new to the MXL line, but recently required a Genesis and Revelation, both very great mics as well. If you haven't used an MXL or are afraid of venturing into the "chinese" made microphone world, do not let the negative feedback affect you, this mic is a solid build that offers VERY solid performance at a modest price.

Great mic! I have a collection of about 12 ribbon mics, and love this one. Low output, (use a Triton audio fethead, or Rode D-power plug for 20dB of extra output) Throw in around 5dB of 10k on your eq and you're good to go! Sounds amazing on the 12th fret of an acoustic pointed slightly @ the sound hole!

Save your money and go get a Cascade Fat Head II with the upgraded transformer. Its cheaper than this piece and you will be way happier with the Fat Head.
