Unique Sound

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

You MUST use a double pop filter with this thing. MXL should include one with this mic package. Nice tonal punch, sounds great even with average preamp. It does have a very sensitive source range, making it somewhat difficult to control vocal levels, not something you would ever want to use in a live applicaiton for vocals, but for recording it is above average if you can maintain levels. Ribbon mics have a very distinct coloration that are perfect for backing vocals. Nice addition to my locker.

Everyman's ribbon

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

For those wanting the ribbon sound on a limited budget. A fine mic for most any purpose, really comes through on vocals and voiceovers. Make it sound phenomenal by running it through a mic strip or at the least a good preamp. Great build quality and at this price you can put several in your mic locker.

Good Addition to your collection

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

This mic sounds absolutely perfect on saxophones. Nice warm sound, very vintage. It's not so great on vocals compared to some slightly more expensive models. But, it has a distinct sound that could be useful in your collection of mics.

Not too bad

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

I needed something to record sax with, and I probably shouldn't be writing this review seeing as I have yet to record sax with it... haha. Anyway, I HAVE used it on a high hat and inside a piano in collaboration with a stereo pair. Both applications sounds decent. Crank the gain up, as with most ribbons. One thing that did irk me a bit was that the case that it came in broke within 2 or 3 times opening/closing it... cheap. Whatever, not a terrible product but it isn't wowing me yet.

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

I purchased a MXL R144 from Musicians friend a while ago. It may not be in the category of the "best" Ribbon Microphone but it is in no way a poorly made product physically and the sound at worst is acceptable. I like it. It sounds good on vocals especially. I am sure it will perform well on guitar and strings. I am going to upgrade the transformer, which from what I read will take it to a new level. If the gentleman says it pops and makes noise He should probably return it as it sounds defective. These mics are a bit delicate, but they are a magnet aluminum ribbon and a transformer. The sound is generally low output and natural, not hyped. I cannot believe the price of this microphone I could not build one for even three times the price. Try another if yours does not sound right: It may have been damaged in shipping or defective. I am happy with mine. P.S. I am a bit meticulous about equipment see my review for Baby Taylor. John

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

This microphone is good for the price, despite early issues. I purchased the mic to run straight in to a Yamaha tape cassette four track (MT-50). The mic does not require a preamp for medium volume applications in this setup. The rejection pattern helps with unwanted environmental noise. Vocals with this mic sound fair, but it shines on a fairly low volume guitar amp. Bass is somewhat boomy depending on placement.

When I first got the mic it did not work, and I disassembled it in the hopes of fixing it. I made no changes, but after reassembling the mic functioned as intended.

Suggesting it lasts a year or so I will likely re-buy, but at this point reliability can't be gauged.

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

This is a ribbon mic, figure 8 pattern. Good for small groups, especially when mixed with directional specifc mics and a good mixer. Works best when close mic'ed for solo recording. I use it just for voice and use a directional mic or electronic connection/pickup for guitars and other instruments

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

Good natural voice recognition, had to filter out low end noise level which did not effect the singers voice. Lower level than normal mike levels but a good preamp allows a good recording. I will only use it for studio recordings would not chance using it outside because of possible wind damage to the ribbon. For the price it is a good buy.

Comments about MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone:

It is passive,, low noise ribbon mic so it requires a good preamp to get the most out of this mic. I use a preamp with variable impedance and plate voltages which makes a big difference in the character.. Main use is acoustic guitar, sax and LP a well as the side mic for mid/side miking. As long as it is treated as a ribbon mic, it should last.
