Overall, I would buy this microphone again if I had to replace mine, the quality, sound and construction is great, and why spend the big dollars when all the expensive microphones are also run through a audio rack to contour their sounds, the cheapers ones are done the same way to give that big bold sound, and alot of people are not aware of this before they shop around and spend the big money that isn't necessary.
For those that want to know if it helps any with the decisions on these microphones, I use mine everyday to broadcast live over the airways on amatuer radio and heard all over the world as well as use it for music.
For the money and sound you can't beat it.
The construction of the V63M is great and well done compared to mics 3 to 4 times if not more than the cost.
I rate this microphone in top classes with any other microphones, it's audio and durability is great, and MXL are awesome products for the money.

if there are no other mics to choose from.It is a good looking, mic but it's pick up is too sensitive and the output far too weak. Does not respond well to hi-pressure environments without a distracting hiss that overwhelms the entire recording. While it is a condenser, I must tell you that I was not able to get any kind of decent sound out of it, because the pick was so sensitive as to pick up unnecessary ambience (i.e. dog's breathing in the background, kids playing in the next room, etc) - and that is in a Auralex'ed recording booth- that I had to keep the gain dialed way back to keep from picking up the junk noise. With a decent pre - you may get an okay response, but the noise from the Hi-Pressure surround is nearly unbearable. While I have never been a fan of a super aggressive bass response, the MXLV63M is very fond of its high end response almost to the point of being totally brassy. As I said, if you have no other options to choose from for your entry level mic or if you are mic'ing some very low ended tracks, you'll be fine. Otherwise, expect an overly bright, underpowered and overly noisy product.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone with Shockmount:

I did A/B with 3 mics that are considerably higher in price and was quite pleased with the performance of the V63M when using it in a recording session. Overall, it has a nice response for male vocals, guitar and cello (those happened to be 3 of 5 sources I tried it on).

Be cautious with plosives (i.e., use a pop shield) on vocals and a high end boost that required just a little EQ to get it to match the silkier mics I compared it with. The self-noise was much lower than I expected on such a low-cost mic.

Overall, I think MXL did a very good job on this mic while keeping the price extremely low.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone with Shockmount:

I use this mic mainly for Overheads on Drums, Micing Guitar Cabs, and just as a room sound. i never really enjoyed it as a vocal mic, it pics up the guitar very clearly, in a side by side with the SM57 i noticed it had a bit more clarity, gets whiny when the signal is distorted and broken up. on overheads the mic picks up everything very cleanly, in the EQ i like to cut the kick out a little bit and bring more presence from the Cymbals and Toms, As A room mic i've miced a jazz band with two of these hard left and right (placed left and right front to the band) and these were incredible they picked up everything very evenly and picked up solos as they occured too.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone with Shockmount:

I had an MXL 990 til I accidentally dropped it so, unfortunately, it would stop working midway through recordings. So, I started eyeing the MXL V63M. I just received it as a Christmas present from my wife and I'm blown away at how much more clear this mic is than my 990 was! Even if my 990 still functioned 100%, it would take the backseat! The V63M does an exceptional job with vocals. Whether you're just starting or a seasoned musician, it honestly wouldn't hurt to purchase one of these as a back-up in your mic arsenal!

I got one of these free when I bought some other stuff from MF at a previous time. The price was right, 'cause I sure wouldn't pay anything for it.

Distorts at the slightest provocation of a strong vocal - you can sing yourself ragged trying to get a good take - some lines just blow out with fuzziness, and if you try to emote on softer passages, it gets lost.

The V63M could be attached to a boat anchor for some extra ballast weight, or used as a solid door-stop. Other than that - blaaaaaaaaaaah!

      V63M Condenser Mic

      By Kenneth Mustain

      from Meridian MS

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone with Shockmount:

The mic is well built it seems, and looks great, it just isnt very hot..you need to be right up in it to get any sound out of it.
      Features..its a mic. Phantom powered
I wanted to get my vocals from a foot away from the mic, no go...it has to be right by your mouth...a wast of my money.
Not much value here unless your using it in a sound booth and the singer is right up on the mic. Dont waste your money...ya get what ya pay for.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone with Shockmount:

For the money, you can't beat this mic.
I have mics that cost $100's more and they are no better than the V63M. Go to your local music store and try one then try one that costs twice as much and see for your self this is a steal at this price. You get high quality at a very low price. I have and use 2 of them in my studio as well as more expensive mic's.
      Built to last
Just look at the price of a shock mount alone and you will see the value here.

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone with Shockmount:

I've been recording live music for a number of years. Worked as a disc Jockey at some radio stations in California in a long forgotten past. This mic is of qood quality and use for a home studio. Can't say anything more.
Right out of the box easy to assemble. Certainly need a wind screen. Very sensitive to background noise. So you must have a very good sound proof room. Not much I can add that hasn't already been stated here. Certainly worth the money.

      SM-57's better know their place!

Comments about MXL V63M Condenser Studio Microphone with Shockmount:

      Fantastic to say the least.
I love the black paint job.
Shock mount is a plus, and it makes you look more legit!
      What features? It's a microphone.
      Great studio quality recordings.
It is built Sturdy, but i wouldnt try and drop it on the floor. The condenser inside is very sensitive to moisture but what condenser microphone isnt? I recorded in front of my Gretsch drum set in more of an over head fashion, I was supprised that it picked up every cymbal, and the double bass pedals came through nicely. I also recorded my voice with an acoustic from a distance, that came through amazingly. Recorded both my clavinova keyboard and an old stringed piano. Put it infront of my line6 amp with some electric with some overdrive and tried recording almost everysetting to see what this thing couldn't pick up.
It picked up things better than when I had 2 SM-57's going in and xy fashion, this is cheaper than buying one of those, and better for recordings than 2 of them. however I still use the sm-57's to bring voice into an amp first that way you get the same recording you would have live. without having to worry about moisture on the condenser.
Perfect price, does require a 48v phantom power and a extra cable, but for the price you can't beat the quality.
