Comments about Nady Ensemble PA 4180 Portable PA System:
I've had the Ensemble 4180 for a little over a year and thought I'd finally post a review.
I am a mobile DJ and picked this unit up to cover ceremonies, cocktail hour(s) and secondary sound when I'm in an old historic home and need to cover smaller rooms with background music.
It does this very well and (knock on wood) with little trouble and fuss. It could use a little more power and headroom, but all in all it's a keeper.
Pros -
Very portable and easy to setup/strike
Nice control and adjustments for mic and inputs
CD/MP3/Tape input
Good overall sound
Cons -
Underpowered- - it's rated at 90 watts RMS per side (180 total) but that is with a 4Ohm load - The speakers supplied are 8Ohm - - so real world total power is probably in the neighborhood of ~ 50-60 watts per side. Not alot of headroom - I am almost running on "11" when doing an outdoor ceremony. However with proper placement on stands the speaker have surprising clarity and coverage.
One thought to goose the full power out of this unit is to build a 2nd set of speakers that are 4Ohm load and/or swap out the components (woofer/horn) in the cabinets supplied so that I'm still able to button/latch it up at the end of the night.
Portable and easy to setup
Not Bad, but not good - - The handle is sturdy enough, yet I find myself either carrying the unit or stacking and rolling it out with my main rig. Unless the cabinet material has changed, I always check screws on the butterfly latches, corners, terminal cups and end up tightening up a few before/after each event.
Good for half or less than half of similar items
Comments about Nady Ensemble PA 4180 Portable PA System:
I owned a Passport P150 and sold it to buy this one. In reality I think the P150 was better in many ways however the Nady has better features and is more versitle in terms of tonal variations. The NADY clips out before getting too loud and this limits its ability. I don't hear real output of 180 watts before it reaches the clipping point. The fan noise in pretty loud making it noisy in a bedroom studio. The way it closes up for storage is cool. I feel like using the handle to pull it around will break however it doesn't look or feel cheap. It is heavy for a compact rig. It is adequate for home use. I expected much better performance than the P150 but they are marginally equal. If not for the Passport's lame effects I would prefer the Passport. It's a jump ball between them.
