This mic has a switch with three positions on it. Cardioid, Super Cardioid and off. It comes with a battery. When the mic is on the off setting no sound comes out of it. When there is no battery in the mic without phantom power you get no sound as well, but if you turn phantom power on with no battery you do get sound?I did not like how this sounded though. I tried this mike with an xlr to 1/8" cable with the battery in and got no sound either, you need to use it with an xlr.I use a presonus firepod, with the phantom power 'on' this mic sounds weird, lots of hissy noise on cardioid setting and a click sound on super cardioid. I found that the best setting was with a battery in and with phantom power off, switch on cardioid mode was the best for this.Unlike several shotgun mics it does not have a low-cut setting.Excited about trying this mic out as overhead drum cymbals, overall I think if used properly this is seems like a great mic for the price so far.

Used this for a video camera mic. This is a step above a consumer video camera microphone. This will not work without a shockmount of some sort or you will keep getting all the noises from whatever it touches. When recording with it there is a noticeable noise it produces. If you have editing software you can pass filter it out all right. If you don't have much and need a little better than a camera mic this will work. I had to buy the Mogami xlr to 1/8" connector which costs more than this to connect it to my camera.

My experience

Comments about Nady SGM-12 Shotgun Condenser Microphone:

How can you go wrong for a mic for this price that works as good as some more expensive models?
I was attracted by the price so I didn't expect to much at the cost. As a boom mic For video production dirictly into the camera or Zoom H4n this piece of kit works very well. True sound and perhaps not as sensitive as some of the more expensive models but...I bought another as back up.

Ask me a question

Comments about Nady SGM-12 Shotgun Condenser Microphone:

So i bought a few of these guys because i needed some mic's to start recording some Podcasts for my website. I was skeptical at 1st based on all the poor reviews, but i have to say that these things work great and sound killer considering how little $$$ they cost. I'm not sure if the people who had bad experiences and left the bad reviews thought that these mic were just simple Plug and Play mic's, but if you want to have these guys work correctly you simply have to know how to use Phantom Power, when to use the extra battery boost, etc. You can hear how clear these mics for yourself by checking out my podcasts, just google jordanojames, cheers.

Sounds Fine...When It Works

By Lans Rothfusz

from Fayetteville, GA

Comments about Nady SGM-12 Shotgun Condenser Microphone:

Tried using it for a podium mic. Only got it to work when I SLOWLY slid the connecting XLR cable in and out to find the micrometer width point at which a connection was made. If anyone else touched the mic, it went dead. There's a reason these are so cheap - it's microphone roulette. I kept the mic for studio work later. Maybe I'll get lucky!

Best Bang for the Buck

By vintagedrummer

from Springfield,MO

Comments about Nady SGM-12 Shotgun Condenser Microphone:

I bought the SGM-12 a week ago and have no complaints. I wonder if some of the other reviewers are using a high Z cable or running a battery and phantom power. These mics work- and work well. I'm using one for cymbal overhead miking -and all come through clean with no volume or signal problems. I'd say it's worth 3 times the price and highly recommend it!

Seems OK

Comments about Nady SGM-12 Shotgun Condenser Microphone:

This is the first shotgun mic that I have ever used in video production and it seems OK to me. Good reproduction into the camera, fairly sensitive, great price.

NOTHING-DOES NOT WORK

Comments about Nady SGM-12 Shotgun Condenser Microphone:

I do not understand why Musician's Friend carries these--as others have said, it simply does not work--nothing--no sound. It was so inexpensive, it was not worth the expense and effort to return it. But what it did cost was our purchasing any product with Nady on it ever again.

This is the most unreliable microphone I have had to work with. It is the worst investment ever. Do not buy it, save up and buy something better.
