Comments about Numark NDX400 Tabletop Scratch CD Player:
The units are lightweight which is nice, quick to set up (the RCA cables are a tad short), and work well with RANE SL3. The only downside I had with these units were when loading tracks from a USB drive. Upon putting in a USB drive (16GB), the first song would pull up great but after that the CDJ would stall out and you could not browse any other files.
Overall, the look and feel was great and the touch sensitive platters were responsive albeit a tad sluggish compared to Pioneer CDJ units.
If you are looking for them just as learning devices, or for a mobile DJ that's just starting out then these are wonderful! These could also work for live performances, as long as you are not intending to use the USB port to pull your music off a flash drive.

Comments about Numark NDX400 Tabletop Scratch CD Player:
I have been a musician and have generally tweaked with sound for a long time, but I am pretty new to DJ-type equipment. This is a really great unit, I read a lot of reviews and such before buying two of these, and I have been very happy. They are very easy to use, the buttons are labeled properly and it feels like it is really well made. The screen gives you lots of information and is well-organized and easy to read. They work pretty well for scratching (although I may not be super-qualified to judge that). I noticed that if you "let go" of the "platter" after moving it forward, it starts right away, but it takes a little bit to "catch up" after moving it forward, just like a real record. There are lots of little hidden "features" like this that they don't always describe in the manual. Everything seems to have been really well thought out and the unit it very intuitive, even for beginners. Almost everything can be done with a minimum of button pushing, most things can be done with one or a couple button pushes (unless you are looking through a poorly laid out CD or drive list, and then that's your fault!) These are great for DJs, but they are also really handy for use around the studio for practical or more avant-garde situations. You can make loops very easily, play in reverse, mangle sound and create other ruckus. They are also a great value.
The only downsides:
The unit doesn't save any of your settings after powering off. You also can't clear out any of the cues or loop points unless you remove the CD or USB. Although it happened only once, I had the touch on the platter become unresponsive, it worked fine after turning the power off then back on. I would have liked some other types of audio outputs as well, these only have stereo RCA jacks, but I guess that is for their target audience of DJs.
A little note: These are capable of doing what I have always heard as called "time stretching", but Numark calls it "master tempo. Once again, maybe that makes more sense if you have a strong DJ background. This means that you can alter the playback speed without changing the pitch, or you can change the playback speed while also chaning the pitch.
Comments about Numark NDX400 Tabletop Scratch CD Player:
We are audio theatre performers who minister in prisons, homeless shelters, churches, etc. We use two scratch players for sound effects and background music. Our previous players were becoming unreliable and stopped playing during at a Thursday night rehearsal. When we got home, my husband started tinkering with the aberrant player while I checked out Musician's Friend. I picked out this player and payed extra shipping to get it here by Monday since our performance was a double (two performances back to back). The new machine arrived as promised and worked like a champ that night. All our cues were spot where they needed to be. We won't be able to get another one for our next performance in 10 days, but I'm hoping to purchase a second one before the next prison engagement at the end of June. I haven't tried the memory stick function yet, but that's high on my list to test in the near future.
Comments about Numark NDX400 Tabletop Scratch CD Player:
Yes.. twins.. (twins bassel.. twins ... Seriously, the scratch feature is amazing. The backspin is sweet (its like a quick scratch if ya know what you are doing) It has a feature that higher end units have, that is if you hold down the cue button and tap the play button. It will play for as long as you want when you release the play button. It resets to the start of the track! The auto BPM is also sweet. If you're in need of a sweet player go no further! Its got some weight to the unit. Anti-shock, it reads USB's! I own two and am getting a third.
