OVERVIEW

Affordable, effective monitoring that won't eat up desk space or big cash.

Diminutive in size, but with a sound that has to be heard to be believed, the Fostex PM0.4 monitor speakers are naturally recommended for desktop use but their superb audio performance in a compact physical size means you can also use them for professional console top studio monitoring, audio installation, and portable audio monitoring. These Fostex speakers feature 36 watts of bi-amped power, UFLC 16mm soft dome HF unit, 100mm LF woofer and overall volume control.

Electronics:

The PM0.4 monitors feature internal bi-amplification employing two state-of-the-art amplifiers which are precisely calibrated to match the performance of the drive units and use high-quality discrete bipolar output devices:HF 18w, LF 18w. High-capacity power supply units are used for excellent transient response. These Fostex speakers offer TRS and Line inputs.

High Frequency tweeters:

The soft dome tweeters employ Fostex's UFLC technology (Poly Urethane Film Laminated Cloth) to achieve light weight and high stability performance.

Low Frequency woofers:

The Fostex PMO.4 speakers use a mixture of cut and milled fibres made from aromatic polyamide impregnated with resins to simultaneously achieve high rigidity and optimum damping. An olefin film is thermally adhered to its surface to control frequency response and ensure reliability. Distortion is minimized by the use of an ultra-pure copper voice coil.

I've been into recording for about six years now. I've heard many of monitors, and for the price, these cannot be beat. The amount of bass that comes out of these things amazes me to this day. Nice to have both 1/4" and RCA inputs. Only flaw is the placement of Volume control (which is on the backside of the unit.) The reviewer that said all quality was lost during mixing must have external processing issues. These monitors produce a very flat sound, so what your mix is what you get. They are not forgiving at all. If your looking for warmth, look somewhere else. For a small home studio, these would make a great choice for someone who doesn't want to drop a fortune for monitors. On another note these things are very visually appealing. Nice gloss black and simplistic design which sells itself. Fostex has a good reputation so I didn't feel like I was taking a chance with these things. So what are you waiting for? Give these monitors a go!

I got these for free, and thought I would like them as a second monitoring source. I hoping for a nice little crisp, tight sound. These are VERY boomy in the low mids! It's overpowering and fake. I tried to like them, I mean they were free, right? After 2 days of listening to them once in a while I just couldn't take it. They just sound terrible. You do get what you pay for in this case.

I just got these two days ago in the mail and have been spending all my free time messing around with mixes of old songs because everything just sounds so much better now. I have no hum like a few others, and these solid, heavy monitors sound wonderful for their modest price. A+

Great for the $$

By Zach Terry

from Carrboro NC

I've been using these for several years now. They hold up great and the sound is phenominal.

The only downside is that the low end is not accurate.....the low end is always waaaay louder and hits harder during the car test, and in other systems. I would suppliment a sub with these little guys to get the sound more accurate.

Fantastic

I'm amazed at how good these things are! I was expecting to spend $150, and get something WORTH $50...instead, I spent the $150, and got a set of speakers that could easily sell for double. These are a must have for a small-project studio, and would do well for a final mix even in the big leagues. MORE than worth the cash! Nice crisp sound that doesn't compromise the low-end. Just fantastic.

Follow the directions for placement

By Harry Punk and Funk

from Northern Michigan

What an improvement. You can hear every little squeak and nuance in your recordings. Really helpful set of speakers. You do have to have separate Rt. and Lt. channel outs on whatever you are sending them from though. Not a bad thing, just know that they are completely independent of each other. Follow the directions exactly for placement. These are near field monitors, not stereo speakers for your ipod! Love them, would buy them again!

Can't beat these for this price!!!!

By Mike G

I have had these Monitors for about a month now and they have worked great so far!! I am halfway through college for Recording Engineering and don't have a lot of money so I bought these. They are reasonably priced and have a good frequency response so you can mix at home in a smaller studio. There could be a little more low end but its not too bad. The can get loud enough and would also work as great reference monitors in a larger setting.

Pleasant surprise these little Fostex, felt good right out of the box, easy install and off you go..
Only lack of minijack connections and digital I/O weights these babies down .*****
All the features you need of a desktop monitor, rca plugs but no minijack, good shielding and a fair fq response. No digital I/O.
Nice finish, looks good and sounds good, pretty tight mid bass and good hi end. Pleasant :-) Mayby one could want a woofer some day?

Unimpressed

By jedirocker8

See all my reviews

I was initially pumped to find a pair of studio monitors for this price that got decent reviews and didn't look like a hunk of junk. But once they came, I realized they were tiny speakers and incapable of producing any reasonable amount of bass. They get pretty loud for the size, and the sound is very flat. They only have a 1/4" input and a volume knob, no eq settings. I would not recommend mixing any type of music on these except for maybe straight acoustic.

Good for the money

Ask me a question

I bought these for my budget studio. I make demos, so I just needed flat response reference monitors. These fill that niche perfectly. As expected, they are little light on the bass end. Add an inexpensive subwoofer and you will be rocking with these speakers. They are a great investment if you don't want to sink a fortune into high-end gear but still want good performance out of your monitors. You won't be disappointed.

GREAT BUY

By Shannon Owens

from Illinois

See all my reviews

The sound that comes out of these little things are incredible. As everyone has said it lacks overall on low end, but that's not to say that these things don't have any....cause they DO...and quite a bit for how small they are. But good news, Fostex makes a sub that goes with these! Bad news is...they don't sell it on this site yet. It's called a PM0-SUBn! Also a REALLY good price for a powered sub! Can't wait until M.F. carries it so I can have the whole system.

ideal for a home studio

Ask me a question

I was mixing thru headphones for years. I'm sure you know how deceiving they can be. So, I got these. I can say that the accuracy of my mixes have improved greatly. I am on good terms with my neighbors, so I use the master volume of my board to control these monitors. They are cranked to about 4, and I never go beyond the half-way mark on the master, it's just way more volume than I need. If you want something that will push a lot of air, these probably aren't for you, BUT, if you are looking for some pretty accurate monitors with a really great stereo presence, you would do well to get a pair!

Great monitors for the price!

By GM-NJsRi

from Georgia

I definitely recommend the Fostex PMO.4 monitors. These are just great. They are very "honest" monitors, and they pretty much give back exactly what you put into them, which is perfect for home recording. I have a Fostex MR16HD 16 track recorder along with these monitors. Great combination. I really like these monitors, and I will probably end up buying some more eventually. Also, I got these monitors as a Scratch n' Dent item, so I got them for $50 cheaper. They work perfectly and they look brand new! No scratches or dents in sight, so look into those, it will save you some money without any effect in quality. Overall, great monitors for the money.

They do exactly what they said they would.

By Heath Patrie

from Marquette, MI

I got the PM 0.4s because i needed something compact and relatively light-weight to use for sound reinforcement at my harp gigs. These little active monitors do exactly what they said they would do - pack a surprisingly big sound into tiny little speakers. No, they are not 'top-of-the-line' monitors; that's not what they're for. They're small, affordable, and have very clean amps. I'm completely satisfied.

Fostex PMO.4's

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

I just got these in the mail yesterday along with my free mopads. And these do hum, but NOT slightly. They hum & buzz quite a bit. I can't turn them up to a decent volume without getting annoyed but the noise. Hopefully I just got a faulty set, so I'll send them back for another pair. If they end up being the same, I'll probably pay a little more for the Rockit RP-5's instead.

Perfect for Pre-Production Recording

By Cap-rzYCO

See all my reviews

I bought these monitors(in white) for my own pre-production writing and composing at home. I run my Line 6 POD UX2 into them and record with Sonor 8.5 Producer Edition Software. These are a great buy for the price. As long as you're not doing an extremely professional recording these are GREAT. Very clear, very good at high volumes, exceptional at punchy tones with lots of attack. Plus these things can handle a lot. My music is a little on the extreme side and have definitely pushed these monitors hard, yet they still sound and work wonderful. My one and only complaint is that they really struggle when it comes to recording bass. They do get slightly muddy and less clear with the bass, but then again I record in drop A tuning. Overall a great buy though and PERFECT for pre-producion or solo work.

Not bad for the price!

By Lord Thaddius

from Michigan

I got these a while back to replace some blown monitors. They are good size, nice sounding and do a pretty good job.The only issue I have is they don't have a slew of low end, so I end up mixing the bass too high. If you can afford to go better, do it. But if budget is on your mind, these could be a life saver.

Great Monitors

By Dan-scVme

from monroe, NY

I bought these looking for somthing that would suite a few things,1. My budget2. My recording needs3. My audio needsI found these to excel at playing back any audio or video file, I use my guitar port as my sound card (greater than cd quality output) and than send it thru a behringer mixer, than to the monitors. Amazing sound quality, great volume and great punch with no sub. The only reason I could see to spend more money on bigger louder ones is if you really needed it. I think these could even suffice as mic speakers for when we jam. Quality is great, sound is amazing, you wont be dissappointed.

In my opinion they are GREAT STUDIO MONITORS! I own a pro recording studio and we turn out A LOT of work. The Fostex PMO.4 speakers are true, realistic little speakers and they beat the (you know what) out of higher-priced monitors. For the money, they are unbeatable!
