The Mackie Onyx 1640i professional compact mixer is one of Mackie's Onyx-i series consoles. It offers built-in FireWire, along with a mix of modern features and technologies for live sound reinforcement and analog or digital studio recording - all in a durable, roadworthy package. While the Onyx 1620i is compatible out of the box with most major DAWs, from April 1, 2010, to May 31, 2010, you can get a free Mackie Universal Driver Upgrade downloadable driver on Mackie's website that makes it qualified for use with Pro Tools M-Powered 8.

The Onyx 1640i is equipped with 16 of Mackie's premium, precision-engineered studio-grade Onyx mic preamps. Mackie is renowned for the topnotch mic preamps used in their mixers, and today, they're better than ever, with specifications rivaling expensive standalone mic preamplifiers.

Channels 1 and 2 feature high-impedance instrument/line-level inputs so you can connect an acoustic, electric, or bass guitar directly into the mixer, eliminating the need for an external direct box.

Extremely adaptable DAW integration Recording and Mixing

The Mackie mixer's channels, aux sends, or the master L/R can be sent straight to your computer via FireWire for recording. Pre/post EQ taps on every channel allow you to integrate our renowned Perkins EQ into the record path. Plus, a stereo return from your DAW, or iTunes is assignable to the control room section or straight back into two channels panned left and right for mix integration.

Powerful Effects Engine

With six aux sends routable to your DAW, the Mackie Onyx 1640i allows you to use your favorite plug-in as a realtime effect. Just route an aux send to your DAW, apply the plug-in, and assign your DAW outputs to the control room or to a channel strip for instant integration into the mix.

Live Recording
Live sound recording could not be simpler! The 1640i mixing console offers the ability to record individual channels, either wet or dry, for studio-quality multitrack recordings that you can edit and mix down later on. It also lets you simply record the main mix, allowing for immediate creation of CDs right at the gig.

Very impressive

Ive been rec and mixing this past year and a half with logic pro on a Metric Halo 2882 which is a higher end ad da converter and recorder. I entered into digi recording with this as i wanted something that would last me and work. As of late ive wanted to get more than 7 mics on a kit for more definition. I was concerned at first with the Mackie because at first i thought all this for 1500. So i researched it and heard some recordings. After i received and mixed a couple pre recsessions i was greatly impressed. Ive never mixed analog so i couldnt understand the hype. I do now. Granted it is a different sound but in a good way. Like the cd is to the vinyl record. One not being better than the other, just different. The Onyx pres are great. Ive got some higher end pres such as BAE, Chandler, Blue, Sytek, and these hold their own. A little thicker than others but its a great color for my pre pallet. If i was starting all over again and i had to choose from MH2882 or the Mackie 1640i, i would go Mackie. But then again id never sell the MH 2882.

I've only had this in the studio a couple of days now, and so far it is living up to the Mackie name. I'm hoping to push it to the limit sometime next month. But as of now, I have had no problems with it connecting to the pc. I'm running Vista with an Intel quad core with 6gb of ram. It is also working great with Sonar 8 Producer.

I have had this boad about a year now, and use it to record our band. I use Adobe Audition with it on a XP system, and the fire wire interface is great for recording. No more sound cards. My only complaint is that it is hard to get my fingers between the faders to push the sub asign buttons.

I have the restocked unit and it arrived in beautiful condition. It'd be tough to squeeze any more analog controls into a rack-mount unit. The main difference between the 1640i and 1620i is the 1640i has 16 full mic pres with inserts. In addition to 16 channels of FW output to your DAW, it also has 16 channels of FW input from your DAW. This gives you the ability to do a real analog mix down af all 16 channels in real time. It also has flexible patching features the others don't so you can patch low-latency effects returns from your DAW back into the mix, etc. That means you can use DAW effects live. Besides more sends and returns, it also is the only mixer in the series that has 4 subgroups. I love the huge amount of balanced INS and OUTS. I'm running it in Windows 7 64-bit in SONAR X2 without a hitch. Make sure you install the latest drivers from Mackie. Know that you are limited to exactly 16 channels of FW I/O, no more. So if you want to monitor an entire analog input mix within your DAW, you'll need to use channels 15 and 16 as your mix monitor channels, leaving 14 channels for FW inputs. You can on the other hand record all 16 channels directly to your DAW while live monitoring, but your PC will only show 8 stereo interfaces, there's no stereo master section (which would be even nicer). I mix in the box so I don't miss midi. The only thing I would like to see would be ADAT and SPDIF I/O. If it had those it would be unbeatable.

Don't buy it if you plan on using for multitrack recording

I bought the 1640i for the sole purpose of being able to record 16 separate tracks simultaneously into Logic Pro X.

Unfortunately, Mackie hasn't provided a driver update that is compatible with any OSX introduced after OSX 10.8, so the mixer is not able to interface with my Mac via the firewire, as it is advertised. 10.8 was introduced in 2012. Since 2012, 4 upgrades to Mac OSX have been introduced.

I called Mackie and they were very unhelpful. Basically, he said we get calls on this everyday and have no intention of doing anything about it.

I will likely be returning this shortly. UGH!
