I bought two of these on a stupid deal of the day. I don't have much experience with condenser mic to which to compare, but to my ears they sound clear, crisp and detailed. However, one of them failed after about 9 months of very light use. Its sound cuts out intermittently and it's not a loose connection. I'm currently trying to get it covered under warranty. The brackets they came with are cheap. They are not sturdy enough at the pivot to support the weight of the microphone, and the threads on the screws stripped out very easily when trying to get the pivot tight enough so the microphone wouldn't fall. I replaced the screws with a more robust setup from Ace Hardware and they've been working fine, so far.

Would I recommend this? Maybe, but with low expectations. I would not recommend this to a professional, but if you're learning and just starting to record in your home studio, it's a good starting point. For the price, they're a good entry level condenser, but I think you could find a better mic for for the same price used on Craigslist if you keep your eyes open.

Comments about MXL 920 Large-Capsule Condenser Microphone:

I bought this for like 80% off as a Stupid Deal of the Day, with the intent of shipping it off directly to Michael Joly at oktavamods dot com. He has a mod for this mic which makes this mic sound a LOT like a U67; no joke. So, for the original cost of the mic, I got the mic PLUS the modification from Mr. Joly. GREAT deal. I'm not sure if I would spend the full price for this mic; there are other better mics that cost just a bit more than this one that sound great without modification. (For clarity's sake, I only would recommend this to a friend if it was at the super-low price at which I bought it such that they could take the cash they saved and have it modified.)

Comments about MXL 920 Large-Capsule Condenser Microphone:

I bought this mic planning to gut it and rebuild the electronics with better stuff. First thing I noticed when I opened it up is that the circuit board had been re-worked by someone that didn't know what they were doing. They lifted a trace and fixed it with a nasty solder bridge. The mic was advertised as being new, and all the packaging was new, so I'm not sure what the deal was there. It worked though, recorded a tune with it. 7 likes on soundcloud. Hmmm.

Have used this mic in my studio and the sound clarity is very good. Highly sensitive sso you don't have to get up close. I use a pop guard in front to eliminate pops and hiss.

Comments about MXL 920 Large-Capsule Condenser Microphone:

I picked this up during a sale here. The mic I had previously ordered isn't going to be available until May so I went ahead and got this.

My only real issue with it is that the mic cable comes loose from the base at times. It's really not the most secure fit.

Other than that though I haven't had any issues with it.

Comments about MXL 920 Large-Capsule Condenser Microphone:

I have a small home recording studio, a Tascam DP-25, Roland & M-Audio monitors and an ART MP Studio V3 pre amp. I use to just use a Shure 57 for recording my Fender De Ville amp but Musician Friend had this MXR 920 for only fifty. I bought it out of impulse to maybe compliment my Shure 57, for only fifty how could I go wrong. Turns out that I am very happy with this mic. It helps balance out my guitar tracks as I can record a single track in stereo now that I have 2 mics.

I'm sure for pro use this microphone would be a poor choice but as for my home studio it makes be very happy. And for fifty you really cant go wrong. The only downside is that the clip it comes with doesn't seem to be as sturdy as other condensor microphone holders. I may want to invest in another clip one of these days.
