OVERVIEW

(Open Box) Great for guitar cabs, horns and more.

Go ahead... get loud. Designed as a studio go-to mic for daily recording, the MXL R80 is built to last inside and outside. MXL has built modern ribbon elements into the R80 microphone. It has a high SPL capacity, making it suitable for guitar cabinets and horns. The figure 8 polar pattern lets sound roll in from both sides of the mic to create a full sound. The MXL R80 excels on the stage and in the studio. A figure-8 pattern will pick up sounds from the front and back sides of the microphone with equal sensitivity while maintaining a large amount of rejection 90 off access. The front of the microphone is indicated by the MXL logo where the audio signal is in-phase while the back side has an inverted phase.

Figure 8 pattern picks up room sound and instruments
Mellow sound with a rich midrange

All metal construction withstands regular use

Ordered 2 of these...have several mxl mics btw...on stupid deal of the day...

Both had very loose/sagging ribbons!

Easy to fix if you know what your doing!

Pop off the grill and look at ribbon...grill top slides off...should not sag!

Sound good after ribbon fixed...may put in new ribbon/transformer later for different tone...

Surprisingly Exceptional on Guitar Cabs

By Tony

from Fort Collins, CO

Verified Buyer

Pros

  • Clean & True Ribbon Sound
  • Inexpensive
  • Solid build quality

Cons

  • Some clean preamps won't have enough gain.
  • Will probably need a mic pre with gain staging.

Best Uses

  • Guitar Cabs

Comments about MXL R80 Ribbon Microphone:

I gave this five stars because for the price, you get an exceptional mic. I find it performs best with louder sources, like guitar amps. I don't have a very powerful voice when I sing so it didn't sound as good with vocals as my condensers do. This model is specifically designed to be able to handle loud sounds while not damaging the ribbon so it's pretty obvious to me it was designed with the guitar amp in mind. I have it mic'd right up to the speaker and the recorded sound is remarkably like the way I hear it in the room. Very full, punchy, lively, all the things you desire after hearing a bland guitar cut recorded with a dynamic mic for the first time. I used to always record electric guitar with a Shure sm57 and/or a Rode NTK condenser but now I'm solely using the R80 and I'm attaining better & truer sounding guitar cuts than I ever have. The figure 8 pattern allows sound to flow in through the back of the mic which gives guitar just the right amount of breath & ambience without having an overbearing or bold room sound which I would sometimes have issues with when using condenser mics. I've used a Neve 1073-style mic preamp thus far with the R80.

Comments about MXL R80 Ribbon Microphone:

Using this for drum over head with an AT-2020 in a Glyn John's type of mic'ing on the floor tom side in a live room for practice recordings. Sounds good to me, the toms cut through a lot better and the highs aren't overly brilliant like the AT-2020 but it is nice having the clarity to back off the highs. I'm not particularly in favor of super tight and clean recordings. I will probably buy a second one.

Comments about MXL R80 Ribbon Microphone:

I haven't used this mic extensively, but so far have been pleased with its performance. I'm not using a dedicated pre-amp - just going straight into a Focusrite Saffire Pro26 - so I can see the weaker output when compared to my Rode NT2A or MXL V69. I don't think this is going to be a problem, though. The fixed figure "8" pattern may be problematic for home studio users trying to record multiple players at once in the same space. I took a chance and bought this on a "Stupid Deal of the Day" and am happy to have it as an alternative to my large diaphragm condensers.

this is a very nice ribbon mic. very typical sweet, rich ribbon mic response to vocals and acoustic instrumentals. i've only had them for a week or so... but i really like them. i run them through an ART tps II. a little twitch hear and and little tic... sigh... nice! the price was amazing, so i bought two of them. if there are problems in the future, i will let you know.

Comments about MXL R80 Ribbon Microphone:

Bought this when it came up on Stupid Deal of the Day, used my backstage points and this cost me only twelve dolars. Sat in the box in a closet for 6 months until I recently bought a Bugera TriRec head and Diavlo 2x12 cab. Pulled it out as I wasn't fully happy with the direct out into cab sim plugin sound I was getting. Put it on a mini mic stand just slightly off the center of the speak dustcap and gave a listen on the headphones as I played - and WOW! Finally a great sound, didn't even have to move the mic. Recorded two tracks, panned L/R and played back through my studio monitors and started EQ'ing. Now, you WILL need to EQ still! It's a dark sounding mic but it doesn't have that fizzy nasally shrill sound many other mics have with guitars. I cut a bit of lows/low-mids and boosted the upper mid/highs a little and man I am impressed. Going to be my go-to cab mic from now on.

Great value on an entry level Ribbon Mic. Ribbons can be expensive but this is a great place to start gaining experience without breaking the bank. Works well on loud sources like drums.

Comments about MXL R80 Ribbon Microphone:

I'm using this mostly to mic guitar amps. I found it sounds best about 6-10 inches in front of the speaker. It gets too boomy if it's any closer. I really like it in combination with a Shure SM57. I've also used it to mic acoustic archtop guitar with pretty good results. Output is on the low side, but similar to the SM57. I got this mic as a Stupid Deal of the Day, and feel like I got a great deal.

Comments about MXL R80 Ribbon Microphone:

Sound quality poor from the front, worse from the back. Sensitivity (sound level) from the back was about 1/2 the front. Definitely not symmetrical front / back. This mike not working as advertised. It seems likely that this mike was damaged in shipping. I bought it at a low price on SDOTD so I could not get a replacement at the same price. I returned it for store credit.
