OVERVIEW

Add tube condenser warmth and depth to your recordings.

The Sterling Audio ST66 is a tube condenser microphone that employs a large capsule with an ultra-thin 3-micron evaporated gold Mylar diaphragm. Optimized to capture the most definition and detail from all acoustic instruments like piano, drums, and guitars, the ST66 mic's low-noise GT6205M tube in a Class-A triode circuit provides warmth and detail, adding new dimension to vocal and especially instrument recording.

The ST66 uses triode wiring on specially selected pentode tubes to yield low noise and a more realistic dynamic response than their competitors. Its power supply is designed with a load-balancing circuitry that allows cable runs of more than 200 feet with no deviation from optimal performance.

Sterling Audio microphones employ several advanced technologies that separate their large-diaphragm condenser mics from the rest of the pack.

One of the more important advancements is their Disk Resonator system. With it, Sterling Audio is uniquely able to compensate for the 14kHz frequency roll-off that is inherent in large diaphragm mics. As any good audio engineer knows, this deficiency translates to a lack of sparkle from high-frequency sound sources.

Other manufacturers have typically solved this problem by cutting other frequencies and then increasing the entire signal to help even out the frequency range. Unfortunately, this results in increased noise.

Disk Resonator Technology incorporates a brass umbrella that protrudes from the center of the diaphragm in Sterling Audio's ST66 microphone. It gently boosts the diaphragm sensitivity to shorter sound waves, allowing it to respond more accurately to those all-important higher frequencies. The result is optimal sensitivity, full frequency response, and a low signal-to-noise ratio.

Another piece of audio wizardry comes in the form of the ultra-thin diaphragm membrane made of Mylar. While most modern condenser diaphragms are 6 to 12 microns in thickness, Sterling Audio, in association with 3M, has produced a highly resilient Mylar that measures a mere 3 microns. This allows the ST66 to deliver an extraordinary degree of sensitivity.
Requires phantom power.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST66 Large Diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone:

I was looking for a large diaphragm tube condenser microphone but the prices were more than I could afford, I wanted a new one rather than a new one due the 'tube' to make sure I had a warranty. I ran across several great reviews of the ST66 and the price was quite reasonable.at under $400 (including a nice quality mic stand).

Musician's Friend quickly processed and shipped my order and I recieved it promptly via FedEx (free shipping). The mic comes in a box with all accessories included (phantom power unit with it's cables, and shockmount). The mic itself seems solid and well built. Everything worked and after a quick minute had it setup.

I immediately fell in love with this mic. Normally, I would run my mic through some effects constantly tweeking them for the best sound. With this mic I found that a minimal bit of hardware compression and reverb was all I needed. The mic is a pleasure to sing through, it's like an instrument for singers like a guitar is to a guitarist. It really pulls the best qualities from your voice and give a pleasant fullness. It must be the tube that gives a natural compression for a gutsy sound when pushed somewhat at higher volume... sweet.

I hope you get to check this mic out... I give it an A+, esp. for the price. Way to go Sterling Audio... Thank You.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST66 Large Diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone:

when i bought this microphone there were not alot of reveiws, and NO REVEIWS for this mic based on hip hop usage.....i run this mic thru my APHEX preamp into my ECHO interface.....im able to acheive a great quality vocal recording that requires little to no EQ and COMPRESSION.....using the SONITITUS suite in sonar X1, i just add a little reverb and very little compression, and my recordings are studio grade and radio ready....i bought the RODE LARGE WINDSCREEN, and it fit perfectly....now i record without the bulky pop filter you would expect.....heres the best part, i disconnected the aphex 207d and this mic was wonderful....there wasnt much difference without the 800$ dollar amp with 100$ aftermarket tube....great mic
its got all the features you would expect in a studio condenser mic....there is absolutely no HISS or ECHO sounds produced by the phantom power supply.....everything works as described
build solid....all the connectors are tight and snug.....the cable included from microphone to power supply box is excellent....the shockmount is well constructed and durable
i owned the ST51 from sterling audio and it was a GREAT microphone.....so when i decided to upgrade it was a no brainer to buy another sterling audio mic....this mic has a CRISP and CLEAN sound with EXCELLENT high end on vocals

Comments about Sterling Audio ST66 Large Diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone:

I purchased this mic mainly to upgrade for vocals. I A-B ed it against a Blue Bluebird I've been using for a little over a year and was really surprised. The Bluebird sounded harsh in the upper mids by comparrison. If this mic holds up then it will be a great investment. Have not tried yet on instruments.

      Pretty Good Mic

      By Anonymous

      from Undisclosed

Comments about Sterling Audio ST66 Large Diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone:

I really like the Sterling Audio ST66 for recording vocals. It has sounded good with all the voices that I've tried (basses to sopranos). I've not, however, been satisfied with the recordings of instruments that I've gotten with this mic (acoustic guitar, violin, piano). It is quite sensitive, and if there's any background noise while I'm recording, it shows up. In a silent room, however, it's silent. This is my first condenser mic, and I am really glad I bought it.

      Perfect Vocal Mic

      By Kaden

      from Orlando, FL

Comments about Sterling Audio ST66 Large Diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone:

This mic is amazing for vocals. Adding that warm tube sound, and the clarity is perfect. This mic, however, doesn't seem to like instruments too too well. I'm sure had I tweaked the EQ a bit more I could have gotten a good sound, but for instruments I'd stick to smaller diaphram mics (and I prefer to use non-tube mics and pre-amps for instruments).Overall, for the value, using this mic on vocals, whether it be male or female - you cannot go wrong. It is a really nice sounding mic.

I Have the Avalon 737 and this mic together, and i always turn off the avalon and connect the microphone without it. just the 002 interface and this mic. its crazy i love it. young adults come in the studio i turn on the avalon pretending because young adults and adults love it, but they dont know am not recording them with the avalon and they end up loving it. it's just crazy! your vocal will sit on your instrumental like Pro. I do little EQ bosting High and a high mids like not passing 3 db. For now its my official Hiphop Microphone because the price and Quality. againg its crazy.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST66 Large Diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone:

I bought this mic blind out of the gate for the price for what it was. I was blown away at how great this mic is for vocals. Warms up any vocalist. As for intruments I've only used it on acoustic guitar and I thought it was decent. It's missing some of that top end jangle that you get from a standard condensor. However if you want to warm up your aoustic it works fine for that. I've been very pleased with this mic would buy another Sterling Audio mic.

Comments about Sterling Audio ST66 Large Diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone:

I was so surprised when I used this mic how warm sounding it is. I was getting ready to buy a RODE NTK and knew and have used it but was told about the ST66 and was blown away. IF you're looking for a nice mic at a great price (which by the way I paid more for) you can't go wrong. It uses a Groove Tubes tube inside and is basically the same model as the Groove Tubes GT66 but much warmer.
