OVERVIEW

Convenient interface for app-y musicians.

Peavey Electronics and leading iPhone applications developer Agile Partners have joined forces to launch AmpKit (sold separately), an unparalleled guitar amp and effects iPhone application, and AmpKit LiNK, a high fidelity audio interface for the iPhone, iPod touch* and iPad. Together, AmpKit and AmpKit LiNK provide musicians of all skill levels with a powerful and convenient way to jam with high quality tones anytime and anywhere.

The AmpKit LiNK audio interface raises the audio fidelity bar for the iPhone platform. AmpKit LiNK is an iPhone, iPod touchand iPad interface for electric guitar, bass, or any line level source, with an output that can be connected to headphones, powered speakers or a PA.

AmpKit LiNK's revolutionary CrossTalk Eliminator solves the feedback problem inherent in existing unpowered iPhone interfaces. Unpowered guitar interfaces suffer from feedback when using headphones. AmpKit LiNK is a powered device with circuitry that virtually eliminates feedback.

The interface can be used with any recording, processing, or tuning application, including Agile Partners' GuitarToolkit, one of the highest-rated applications in the iTunes App Store.

First off this is not a Marshall, Mesa, Fender Twin, Orange or any other of your favorite amps. It is digital technology moving forward.

I think it is a fantastic tool in a quick an easy format.

I already owned an iPad2 and bought the amplink.
It performs as it should.

I use Ampkit but it does work well with amplitude.

It think it would be best suited for beginners.
If you purchase the app upgrades it provides numerous tonal opportunities.

I would use it for casual band practice, but it is not functional for changing tones on the fly.

I have plugged it into a board, amp and DAW recording and have found usable tones.

If I was in a "casual" band where I needed a singular sound and very little variation, I would consider it for it's ease of use.

The reality is that it is not enough in any serious situation.

I know that this stuff is scary and almost laughable to some of us traditionalists, but I am impressed with the technology.
Moreover, I believe that it can promote creativity.

Then I tried the iRig: the main competitor. Huge difference! It felt more solidly constructed, needed no batteries, and instantly worked with no background noise! (Well, almost none. Certainly minimal compared to the AmpKit Link) Occasionally a bit of feedback, but hazards of the trade. I used the iRig with the AmpKit app: didn't bother to switch over to the one they recommend, and it worked fine.

No contest: iRig is far superior in my experience, and worth the extra 10 bucks.

Note: Musician's Friend was phenomenal throughout both returns: got a live, knowledgeable person instantly, and they helped find a good solution both times. Great company: thanks.
Great concept: poor execution.
The first one I bought didn't work at all. Light on, nobody home.
The second one they sent worked for about a week, although with a disappointing amount of background noise. Then it slipped off the table, fell about 3" and was caught by the guitar cord. Huge feedback, so I unplugged everything, and it never worked again. Very flimsy construction.

Comments about Peavey AmpKit LiNK Guitar Interface for iPhone and iPod Touch:

The options included are limited but useful for my purpose. I don't use it as a modeler, because I have other, better options. But it makes a great practice tool for evenings in front of the TV. I can hook it up to my iPod Touch and run my guitar or bass through it, and put an earbud in one ear and hear both my playing and the TV without disturbing my wife. It would also be good for a portable practice rig away from home.

Handy accessory. It would be good if it came in an Android version, but since I don't have an I-phone, I'll have to gift it away.

Comments about Peavey AmpKit LiNK Guitar Interface for iPhone and iPod Touch:

This item is a loss leader. It comes with only the most basic functions. Amp, noise gate and fuzz. No delays or any other effects. You need to go to the app store and spend more money for their "packages" with more effects. They don't tell you this until you download the app. I was extremely disappointed with this unit. At least it came with two batteries that I can use in something else. Save your money. Don't waste it on Peavey Amplink.

Comments about Peavey AmpKit LiNK Guitar Interface for iPhone and iPod Touch:

I like Peavey as a company. They produce generally useful and reasonably priced electronic devices.
Unfortunately, the connector that plugs into the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch is of very poor quality. The result is that even the slightest movement causes an unbearably loud burst of static.
This isn't a one-of problem. Being a gluten I purchased a second one only to instantly regret it because it suffered the same annoying problem.
This is too bad because if you take the trouble to tape down the box to the iPad using gaffers tape, it works as it should.
BTW I confirmed this was a Peavey problem and NOT an iPad problem by purchasing a TASCAM iXZ Mic / Instrument input for iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch which works the same but has a higher quality connector and doesn't have this problem! It costs about twice what the Peavey unit does but it adds Phantom power and has one of the combo Balanced and guitar input style connectors which lets me use a mic on my acoustic.

Comments about Peavey AmpKit LiNK Guitar Interface for iPhone and iPod Touch:

input levels! if you just plug it in you will get some annoying feedback! Then you will want to return it. However if you adjust the input levels, and the gate you should be fien. Just make sure to adjust the output levels as well. If you are a metal player like myself you will probably have the hardest time setting this thing up because the higher gain tones are the hardest to adjust to your liking. If you play clean or low gain music then it should be more of a breeze. if you want to use this in garage band you have to turn off the crosstalk protection in the settings. Although I have had very little luck with getting a decent sound in garage band. Ampkit allows you to import recordings through copy and paste however so you can bring your ampkit recordings into garage band. This thing is good for a casual player or serious player. Remember not every serious player has money to drop on a mesa, or marshall stack or the original equipment. Not all signed musicians had lots of money before they got signed. Having a marshall stack is not a requirement of a record contract. Also with how the record companies are doing now good luck with that contract. Anyways also remember that to get the best sounds you should make sure your guitar is properly maintained as well. All in all it's a great tool! If setup properly it beats out my pod. It's less money, It sounds the same, the app includes backing tracks, recording options, a tuner, and stuff i'm sure I'm not thinking of! This tech is amazing, and I wish I had this when I was a serious musician years ago! One bad thing i can say is that I'm using an iPad mini and it's hard to set this thing up in a way that it won't slip and yank my device off the table and break my iPad. Your best bet is to use a mount or something.

Comments about Peavey AmpKit LiNK Guitar Interface for iPhone and iPod Touch:

I bought one of these for a portable way to practice w/o need for an amp and electricity. With this unit paired with my iPod Touch (loaded with practice songs or backing tracks) I can sit beneath a tree at lunchtime and sneak in some practice time using a guitar (or uke) and headphones. Nice!

The comments about noise when the Ampkit moves are accurate in my experience. This is caused by movements of the cable running from the Ampkit into the iPod, so my solution was to velcro both the Ampkit and iPod to a small board so it is very stable and still very portable, and now with no noise due to errant movements.

The comments about build quality are also accurate...the Ampkit seems a bit flimsy in construction, but I think my velcro/board solution will help ensure longevity, too. After a few months of use, mine is still performing solidly.

I use the Ampkit app as I bought some virtual pedals for tonal variety. Easy software to use.

Overall, the Ampkit is a very cool tool at a very nice price, in my opinion. :-)

I researched all of the other IOS guitar based interfaces, actually trying the iRig, but this one cuts back on the feedback. I easily recorded with it using both GarageBand and Auria. It's also great for practice, and the Ampkit app was great, only drawback is the free version justs comes with one high gain amp, and a copy of the Ibanez Tube Screamer... Over all I'd say get it, you won't regret it.
