I currently own and have owned a lot of Peavey gear throughout the years and none of it has ever let me down. I bought these to replace some older model SP2's that I dearly love but,I'm getting older and they were not getting any lighter. These speakers at 33 lbs. are a joy to carry and, I can put them on my stands by myself with ease and, did I say carry them both at the same time? The sound is SUPERB and, the looks of these units are GREAT. I'm keeping my SP2's but, I'll probably be using the PR12's from here forward. I'm using these with an older model Peavey 2-15 sub and, the whole rig is connected to a Peavey XR8600 mixer amp and, it will rattle the walls with pure clean undistorted sound if you will. I'll never have to run it in that mode because most of the gigs that I do are medium to small clubs and, bar and grill places. If I were to book an outdoor gig like a street dance or even something in a large auditorium or gym I am completely confident that it would not be a problem covering the gig adaquetly. I highly recommend these speakers and, the price tag for these for what you get is very reasonable.

Very happy with this speaker. I'm the music directer & sound man in our Church. We bought these speakers about 13 months ago, and they work very good. We got two for the mains and I'm using one for a monitor. Our church is'nt that big, it's about 1200s.f. I'm sure they could handle a bigger room, and the price is very good.

Comments about Peavey PR 12 Loudspeaker:

Today I had the chance to connect to my Yamaha PA (EMX312) this speaker along with a Kustom 12" and a Behringer B212. I really dont know how is there people comparing these speakers. Simply it is not fair to compare the Peavey PR12 with these speakers. The sound of the Peavey is just GREAAAATTTT!!!! and much more better. Perfect highs, mid and lows. I connect my Yamaha electronic drums thru my PA and it rocks the house. If you put the PR12 in a stand it will produce a good amount of low end; but sitting on the floor the bass that comes out of this speaker is spectacular!!! The difference is very noticeable. 100% recommended. Don't waste your money in other expensive brands. One thing: for larger venues (like 300+ people) I add the Peavey subwoofer 15". Very light, passive and can be connected in parallel with the PR12 or in a separate channel for better control of the mix.
What do you expect from a passive speaker? The only feature is the parallel input... good!
The quality can be seen out of the box. The construction is solid and very good eye appealing.
Worth every penny. They are not cheap at all nor expensive; just very fairly priced.

Powerful and Practical

By james biggs

Comments about Peavey PR 12 Loudspeaker:

Great speakers for the price.
Recently purchased a parui of Peavey PR12N speakers for my band's PA system. The Peaveys replaced a pair of old Carvin 12" speakers, one of which had blown out. I looked at a lot of brands (Mackie, Behringer, EV, JBL) but chose the Peaveys after reading so many good reviews on this site and as well as others about Peavey's price, performabce and reliability. I have owned EV and Yamaha speakers in the past, but this was my first Peavey purchase. The reviewers were right - these Peaveys rock. Super light weight, tough plastic casing, crisp high end. I run them in parallel off a Crown XLS 1000 amp in bridged mono mode (delivering 1100 W into a 4 ohm load). Seems like the SP 12's require a lot of wattage for 12" speakers (400W at 8 ohms), but the sound is awesome - far superior to the old Carvins. Price and performcne, I am definately impressed with their performance, packaging and would recommend them.
Seem tough but reliability remains to be seen. Peavey has a great reputation for endurance and quality, which I am counting on.
Price was among most competitive of any of the brands I reviewed.

PR 12s

Comments about Peavey PR 12 Loudspeaker:

We use multiple Mackie 15s for big venues and needed a smaller more portable speaker for smaller gigs. Tried a pair of PR 12s belonging to a friend and loved 'em. Bought a pair! Tough, lightweight and great sound for the money. I mix acoustic guitar and lead vocals through a Fishman Mini Pro which I use as an on-stage monitor. Run that signal, 2 bg vocals, lap-steel and stand-up bass from the board to the PR 12s. Stand-up bass is a tough instrument to get a decent PA sound on, and I was concerned that the 12s might not handle it at any kind of volume. No problem! No distortion, no clipping. These PR 12s are great value for the money, and EASY to load in and out. Couldn't be happier.

Nice Little Cab

Comments about Peavey PR 12 Loudspeaker:

This cab is incredibly light, and very convenient to handle. It is simple but very attractive, well constructed, and well thought out. I like the fact that it has a classic look, and does not resemble some form of spacecraft, or perhaps some kind of alien artifact. I have been a musician and sound tech for almost 40 years now, and I use this cab (with a capable subwoofer), in a loud rock band, with five vocalists, guitars, heavy bass and drums, saxophone, and keys. The efficiency of these cabs was a bit lower than I expected, but with 550 watts available to each side, it did ok. The cabs were crossed over sharply (24db per octave)at 100 hz, and in a softer setting, these would have sounded terrific. In this very loud setting, they just held their own.. The high end has to be eq-ed up quite a bit, and I put a limiter on this cab, as well as light overall compression on the system.I was impressed with the mids that this little 12 produced, and even at very high volumes, it did decently, with the limiter engaged. If I did it over again, I'd get the Impulse cabs, but I had to give these a try, owing to their price point, and extremely light weight. Without a sub, I would not recommend these for anything other than vocals only, or speech reinforcement. They would probably be decent for a dj, also, if used with a sub. Well worth the money, if used in the proper setting.

Fantastic Speakers

Comments about Peavey PR 12 Loudspeaker:

Starting a band takes 3 things: guts, patience, and money. It's not worth your time to buy crappy speakers to just replace them in a year. These speakers are the real deal. They have great highs and great lows. The price is a bit high, but its in a good range. For anyone just starting out, I'd defintely recommend these. It will shock you how much power they have. GET THESE.

Comments about Peavey PR 12 Loudspeaker:

I'm powering 4 of these from a crown XTI2000 high passed at 90Hz. Yamaha 01V console. I use them for DJing, live bands, etc. They will get me in the low 90's dBA wise easilly from about 60ft back outside, which is plenty for me. These thing are incredible for what they are. Expensive speakers will be much better, but you can't go wrong if you are on a budget like me. The only thing I would immediately notice is that the tweeters aren't as clear in the high mids as some more expensive speakers. However, they don't have a boost there either which is good. While there are good and bad things about the sound...be quiet about the bad stuff because they are so cheap!!!! lol
Very basic, however I like that the tweeter has a fuse. I don't worry about cranking them up for this reason. I did have to install some speakon connectors in the back because they only have 1/4" connections. This was very easy though. Pretty tough housing and grille.
Very good depending on the situation. Outdoors, these speakers slam. They sound great with just a couple of EQ notches. Maybe like two in the low mids and high mids. Don't expect any substantial low end out of them below about 80Hz though. You need subs with these speakers if you are needing good low end. They have warm low mids that you can feel and the tweeters extend up to as high as I can hear (like 18kHz). I think they have a little high shelf after 10kHz, but I like that. It's maybe an extra 2dB up there. It's unusual to get this kind of sound from a cheap plastic cabinet.

Indoors, they are a bit of an EQ challenge because they throw sound everywhere. But, that's why I have a Crown XTI2000 with 3 parametric EQ's at my disposal. I can always get something decent sounding even in small rooms.
Cheaper than I was building my old mains for for my little personal rig.

This is a terrific, USA made speaker, especially for the price. It has a smooth, wide range sound, with no overblown bass or screechy highs. It is easy to carry around, and reasonably compact. It is well made and looks very durable.

Peavey speaker quality in an American made product. Go for it, you won't be disappointed.

I bought a pair of these when they first came out 10-12 years ago. Since then, I have upgraded my entire rack 2-3 times but am still using my Peavey PR12s. They've been used indoors, outdoors and in both large and small venues. I still haven't found anything else (for my money) that I am willing to buy. Great durability, lightweight and exceptional volume/sound quality with less than 400 watts of power per channel.

Comments about Peavey PR 12 Loudspeaker:

I was considering some Kustom KPC-15 15" loudspeakers. I was convinced that 15" would be the minimum size I would need to work the outdoor distances I have to do sometimes (150 - 200 feet with a fairly noisey crowd) I took the advice of the music store folks and spent a bit more for the Peavey 12 inchers. These speakers have not disappointed. I am currently putting between 100 - 200 watts per channel through them and there is not one hint of distortion. Lots of range is still available at that wattage...has me considering a more powerful amp to take advantage of the increased headroom. Awesome Bass! I can not say enough about these! Durable construction. Nice job Peavey!!!

I own a mobile DJ business here in michigan, we just bought a pair of these for smaller parties. They are PURE QUALITY I honestly think we could use these for parties up to 400 people. They have the perfect blend of highs and lows. A subwoofer wouldnt hurt, but I dont think its necessary. If your a dj or a band, this is perfect for you, wont let you down, and they are UNREALISTICALLY lightwieght, I dont know how they do it. A+ from me!

Comments about Peavey PR 12 Loudspeaker:

I've owned two of these for quite some time (about 4 years), taken them to various locations and they are still kicking. I use them as monitors for our musician section in our church.Firstly, these speakers are very rugged and well crafted. They hold up to heavy usage and can take a beating. They sound good overall. The highs are very crisp and the lows can thump, but I wouldn't overpower with lows because you can blow the speaker. The mids are a little muddy, so I wouldn't try to use them for instrument mains. They work well as monitors though.I did use them for vocal mains as an emergency before because the powered Mackies that I had blew. I was surprised at how well they handled the main vocals. The vocals came out clean and crisp. If I had to, I would use them again for vocal mains but like I said they work wonderful as monitors.I don't really have a need to get anymore because they hold up so well but if they ever got damaged, lost, or stolen, I would get them again in a heartbeat.

They perform pretty well, INCREDIBLY LIGHT and easy to set up. I?ve mic'd drums a few times and I think a sub would help but for vocals guitars and djing these are pretty good -although a little lacking on the lower end. As I said a sub would help. Overall good though

Its often said that speakers and amps have to be big and heavy before they're any good. Well I beg to differ. We just bought some PR 12s today and they work great for us. We didn't have anywhere to sing so we set our PA up out in the yard and once we hooked everything up we ran through some of the music we play. I couldn't believe that such small speakers could produce such big sound. It sounded awesome. I only heard them clip when I would sing a real hard P or T sound and I think that was only because I was running it real loud. I highly recommend them.

I have owned these as well as the bigger pr-15s for over three years and I can't really find anything bad to say. I like the pr12s a lot better than the pr15s. I think the pr15s are boomier to me. To be honest if you are not playing bass heavy music or require speakers to handle an audience of over 400 people you can eq these to sound as good as about anything out there in a 12" cabinet. They have been very dependable.
