These are not AKG headphones, they are made by Superlux and are similar to its HD661B's. The reviewer complaining that they are not DJ headphones and that they don't have sufficient bass should be reviewing DJ headphones. These are EQ'd for studio work (they are made for "Presonus") and in that venue or for simply listening to music, these mostly neutral and dynamic headphones simply cannot be beat for the money. If you use them with a USB DAC like the FIIO E10 or E17, you even get the detail of $500 headphones. Compared to others: (1) AKG 240 mkII - much better bass reproduction; (2) Sennheiser HD280 - a little louder, more comfortable, bleeds more sound, similar detail, a little more high end shimmer; (3) Ultrasone Pro 750 - a little less detail, but very similar sound (HD 7 is the better value); (4) Stax electrostatic headphones - less detail/resolution, but better bass reproduction, easier to use and a better value. I find the bass reproduction almost perfect for studio work or listening to music exactly like it was recorded. I've owned a $25k home audiophile system (as well as extensively record live music) and know exactly how some recordings/music should sound. These headphones simply are an outstanding value for someone looking for accurate/neutral, detailed and dynamic sound. Similar priced Sony and Sennheiser headphones do not compare. Make sure to break them in with pink noise for at least 24 hours before listening to them.

To start, I got these for free with a promotion Presonus was running.

I really wanted these to be great. I love most of Presonus' gear and at first I thought these would be awesome. Started on a mix with them and everything sounded great in the cans. When referenced on other speakers (monitors, headphones, earbuds) the mix was so muddy in the low-end I couldn't believe it. I'm not sure I would even use these to start a mix anymore. The mix was so far off that I would have to do a ton of work when switching to the monitors.

I would likely use these for guitarists/bassists while tracking, but that's probably it...and for that, they would be more than fine. Music sounds great through them, and I found the volume to be more than acceptable...but for referencing...Look elsewhere.

Another thing that bugs me about these is the material on the cans. For some reason, it makes my ears sweat like crazy. It may just be the way they sit on my ears...everyone's head is different.

Comments about PreSonus HD7 Semi-closed Back Studio Headphones:

Picked up a pair of these last week on sale. Pleasantly surprised at the level they sound clarity compared to my other more expensive AT headphones. They're close as you're going to get to "flat" in this price range.
I never completely finish a mix with cans. I use cans in the early stages of a mix to balance levels, initial EQ moves and panning. Then hit the monitors to finish off the mix. These work jus fine for this task. Just a well as cans I own that are three times the price.
The downside to these are they are semi-closed backs. I always use closed backs for tracking vocals to eliminate bleed. So, no vocal tracking ability as far as I'm concerned. Guitars, drums, etc. while be just a fine fit for these.

Comments about PreSonus HD7 Semi-closed Back Studio Headphones:

I compared them to a pair of DT 770s. Comparing closed back to semi open isn't ideal, but it's what I have available to me. Immediately I noticed the bass to be much more pronounced in the HD7s. Listening to a mix, I know I won't be able to use them for the final mix down, but I should be able to use them for tracking or minimal mixing.
Overall quality, as long as you are not too rough with them, they should last quite a while. The cord is quite long and they do come with a thin carrying bag.

I have the ATH-50M, and find these headphones similar in accuracy, but even more comfortable.

I also own the Sennheiser HD600. It performs better, but is not worth 9 - 10 times the price.

Thus, when on sale, these Presonus (Superlux)headphones are an exeptional deal.

They don't feel like expensive headphones - but they sound VERY clear and clean. Last night, I brought 3 separate mixes into my DAW, and remixed using these. Today, in playback over speakers... way more definition and clarity.

If you're looking for glorified subwoofers on your head, go get ripped off for a pair of beats. But if you're looking for close to flat... these are an absolute steal for the price. I just ordered two more pairs.

These Presonus HD7's are as good as my AKG 701's at a faction of the cost! Distinguishly clear - lows, mids, and highs all definite. Awesome listening!!

Comments about PreSonus HD7 Semi-closed Back Studio Headphones:

MF is ofering these at an incredibly low price with free shipping. So I was skeptical....as we should all be when we see low priced sound equipment.
This turned out to be one of those pleasant experiences that has me wondering about the few bad reviews of these cans. First..."reference" headphone does not mean you can get an accurate mix.
I've mixed through headphones costing more than a big screen TV and hated the results. So giving a bad review based on not being able to mix through them is invalid.
The bass response is not cranked up and sounds real while not causing ear fatigue. If you are looking for augmented bass buy some of the overpriced brands with Dr.endorsements, etc.
I agree with one reviewer who liked the HD7's better than the AKG 240MKII monitors. The HD7's
Have a better feel on the head and are clearer at lower volumes. The AKG's are 600 ohm...which I personally think is a little high for most home studio usage. I am not a fan of of Sony 7602's. Every field soundman out there has used these things to monitor sound for film and video. I'd rather go with the HD7's as they are much truer to real sounds in the field.
For general listening to recorded music these are quite adequate. They have an audiophile feel and sound for a very low price. I will be getting another set just to have around.

Ok, Dark Side of the Moon album is done. My honest unprofessional no resume of Studio Greatness opinion is this........
Super flat, so much that I could hear track separations that I've never noticed before, fx and synth in the mix as intended, I could actually completely hear the beginning and end of summed track analog distortion as it would rise up in the mix, and to me........ All track gain was so equal which allowed me to really focus on what Mr. Parsons was doing with his up front decisions per section...... For me, these are GREAT!
Edit: Oh yeah, and Super comfortable on my head/ears, no pressure spots, lightweight, and most importantly No Ear Fatigue after whole album!

I got these on a crazy deal. I ordered them on April fools day and got them the next day. FAST is an understatement. I have other Presonus products so this was a no brainer and since a friend saw the deal and shared it with our group, I was able to get these and save a ton of cash. I wanted to have the best gear I could afford. These are a MUST HAVE item if you take your home studio serious as I do. For finding mistakes in the mix, these are the tool for the job as are the PreSonus Monitors. Both used together will help make you mixes the best they can be. When clarity counts PreSonus is now my go to company for recording gear. Musicians Friend has also impressed me with their speedy shipping and this was my first purchase from Musicians Friend and I will be shopping more often.

I got these pair of headphones free with an audio interface I bought a while back. I've used them a good amount and can say that I like the clear sound they produce, but they are not reliable for any serious mixing. The low end is completely misrepresented, as it is in many speakers, so trying to mix on these headphones is near impossible.
