OVERVIEW

A powerful recording channel strip in a 1 rackspace unit!

The PreSonus Studio Channel is a professional channel strip combining a Class A tube preamplifier, a VCA-based compressor, and a 3-band parametric equalizer. The Studio Channel is perfect for all levels of studios. Ideal for all types of microphones, instruments, keyboards, and synths, the PreSonus Studio Channel has the sonic power and flexibility to achieve any tone you can dream of, including luscious in-your-face vocals, crystal-clear acoustic guitars, fat, solid bass guitar, dynamic acoustic piano, cracking snare, punchy bass, huge MPC tracks, and more.

Enhance your signal path
The Presonus Studio Channel was designed to outperform preamplifiers that are built-in to most recording interfaces and affordable mixers. Add a VCA-based compressor and studio-grade equalizer to the class A tube preamp and you get not only big, fat, tube tonality but also complete control of your tone and sounds. Since much of the recording process is accomplished one track at a time, you need a signal path that can deliver a variety of high quality tones and sounds, which is why the Studio Channel is a prime tool for any studio.

Class A Tube Preamplifier
The Studio Channel has everything needed to deliver big tone. The preamplifier stage of the Studio Channel is based on the award-winning BlueTube preamplifier with a high-output 12AX7 vacuum tube operating on voltages higher than other preamplifiers in its class. It delivers high headroom and big tone. Dual control Gain and Tube Drive enables a wide range of sounds from transparent and clear to edgy and overdriven.

Full-Featured VCA Compressor
The compressor in the channel strip is a fully variable ultra-fast and smooth VCA-based circuit with all of the controls needed for a wide-range of compression settings: ratio, threshold, attack, release, and gain make up. The VCA-based compressor is known for musicality as well as ultra fast attack with the ability to tame the fastest transients. From slap bass, to snare drum, to vocals, the Studio Channel's compressor stage allows you to record as hot as needed without clipping giving you total dynamic control.

Three-Band Parametric EQ
The equalizer in the PreSonus Studio Channel is like a Swiss Army pocket knife, with the ability to carve out unwanted frequencies as well as tailor your tone to enhance your sound. The custom-designed amplifiers in the EQ deliver sweet-sounding gain/cut for ultra smooth highs, deep, solid lows, and clear midrange. The mid-band of the EQ section has variable Q for controlling the width around the center point of the selected frequency. High and low frequency bands give you the option for selecting peak/dip or shelving frequencies.

You can drive yourself insane researching the outboard gear that's going to take your recordings to the next level. I spent 3 months reading 100's of reviews about 100's of different products in every price range and finally ended up with a pair of these channel strips on the recommendation of a buddy of mine from a "big studio" and I couldn't be happier! My very first project out of the box with these channel strips required classical guitar (recorded direct), acoustic guitar (direct), bass (direct) and vocals. I set the channel strips up just how presonus had recommended with their very handy, and included, "setup suggestions" and began recording.Once a simple mix was complete, I had a finished recording that completely blew away anything I had recorded without them. Exceptional warmth, headroom, presence, clarity, punch and all of the other attributes you would desire from a GREAT channel strip. You do NOT need to spend 1,000's of dollars on mic pre's, compressors and EQ's to make truly stellar recordings... take it from me!I did the homework for you and this was the best money I have ever spent on any gear period.

I have had this channel strip for over two years now. I have used it in many different configurations. I have used it on vocals, pairing with both dynamic and condenser microphones. I have also used it with line input for recording guitars. I have replaced the tube as many other reviewers suggested. The bottom line is that the channel strip is noisy. it generates white noise and I cannot EQ it out. i hear it on all my recordings. I have wanted to like this channel strip from the beginning based on all the glowing reviews. However, my experience with it leaves me very dismayed. I paid a lot of money for it. If anyone knows the secret to getting a clean sound out it please do tell and I will change my review.

So you need a better preamp?

Comments about PreSonus Studio Channel Tube Channel Strip:

Unit looks slick, a deep blue face with a backlit VU meter, which works just fine. The preamp has alot of gain, clear, with no audible self noise till around +40db. The "tube drive" function routes the audio signal to the tube, which is a Chinese 12AX7. I like this tube drive function, it allows me to pre-position the source from front to back, with %0 being the back and %100 being the front. I didn't like the tube that it came with. I took the top plate off, which is so easy you almost think it's made just so you can switch out the tube with a brand new gold pinned Tung-Sol 12AX7, genius. The compressor is nice, with the ability to switch to a soft knee operation, and a switch that positions the compressor after the EQ, so lovely. I don't use the "auto" function very much, but it doesn't let you down. The EQ is versatile enough for tracking, with the ability to clean up some problem frequencies. Overall, the sound of the Studio Channel is focused, musical, and has plenty of dimension. With the tube drive routing the signal to the 12AX7 there is more movement; the sound seems to come alive. That being said, this is not the destination of sound, it is merely a stepping stone. It is not ideal, but it will get you there.

GREAT CHANNEL STRIP

Comments about PreSonus Studio Channel Tube Channel Strip:

This thing rocks if you know how to use it correctly. Like with any compressor you have to know how to use it first to get the sound you want. you don't have to be a recording genius either. experimenting for long periods of time will get you there. The 12AX7 should deffinently be replaced because its a cheap chinees tube. Changing the tube is simple and you can put a great tube in it for cheap. i recommend a NOS(new old stock) tube. because the quality of them is far better than todays standards. you can find them very easlily. The EQ works very well to. You can do wonders with this thing. For the price you are not gonna get better!!!!!!!

Great For Vocals

By Mike-hIC4V

Comments about PreSonus Studio Channel Tube Channel Strip:

I purchased this unit a few weeks ago. It only took me reading through the manual and a few hours of tweaking to fully grasp how versitil this device is. I've tried many preamps over my years of experience as an artist and recording engineer. Finally I found the one that gives me that pro sound which I was looking for. Again, I must stress that this unit has somewhat of a learning curve. The manual comes with some awsome pre-sets and tutorials to help you understand exactly how to use all the settings. The compressor seems very transparent. Also, the eq is very versital. With this unit, a set of Mackie monitors, and a high quality AD/DA Interface you will be sure to develop a professional sound in your home studio. Since upgrading to the presonus studio channel my recordings can easily compete with the quality of million dollar studios. I would highly recommend this great product. One additional note: This unit will not help you if your using cheap chines microphones. At minimum I would recommend the AKG C214 OR the Sure KSM 32. Cheap Mic = Cheap Recording!

Comments about PreSonus Studio Channel Tube Channel Strip:

Well my first one was so good I had to get another. To start with I used the channel for instruments and achieved an incredible quality sound - I did upgrade the tube to a Mesa Boogie 12ax7 (bc I use a MB Royal Atlantic). So that became dedicated to guitar and forced me to get a second unit for vocals. I kept the stock tube in the second unit bc I go for a light tube sound on vocals if any at all.

The trick to this unit is starting with suggested settings and dialing in your sound from there. At first I was experiencing a good bit of noise and dirty sound but turned down the high and mid gain a bit and voila, instant success. Make sure you don't have your interface gain to high as well. Once you get your settings you'll be extremely pleased.

This thing is great. If you're thinking about it, buy it. I had an Art PAC before this and was never totally happy with that, mainly because of the noise it added to the signal. Got this baby and was blown away at the sound quality. No noise at all. Just warm, adjustable tube tone and a wealth of great features. There are so many ways to dial in the sound just right, including bypassing the compressor and EQ, rollover buttons, knobs for adjusting the Q, knobs for setting the frequency, all the parameters you could want for the compressor, and more. From looking around, it seems like most of the other options in this price range have almost all the same features, but it really is that crystal clear warm sound that makes this the right choice. This, and a decent condenser mic, can get you really close to a professional studio sound.

Comments about PreSonus Studio Channel Tube Channel Strip:

I bought this unit 5 monthds ago and specifically wanted to wait to write an honest review and really understand the function of it. When you first use it, it definately takes time to understand where it shines. The tube sound definately smooths out vocals and bright acoustic guitars, yet where I love this unit is on a kick drum with the tube saturation at 100%. At least with an EV N/D868 kick mic it adds tons of upper mid growl and presence that for some reason just can't be achieved with an EQ. I like to set a low threshold low ratio on the compressor to keep it pretty invisible and do most compression at mixing, but I have to say even with the compressor clamped down on a kick drum signal it still sounds very natural, not boxy at all. The EQ does a very good job of letting you control unwanted or missing tones in a signal and it does it with minimal coloration, very musical but not very sensitive. Don't be shy on the EQ because sometimes it take bigger adjustments to hear the difference. Along with the A/D card option this preamp is a total winner for a home or project studio, it even sounds good as a guitar preamp live.

Comments about PreSonus Studio Channel Tube Channel Strip:

I've got to say: MusiciansFriend has done it again with a fine piece of equipment. This Presonus has some of the smoothest laid back vocals a person could ask for with just about any studio microphone that has been tested on it. I use this equipment for music but mostly vocals for broadcasting on the airways and I have had nothing but beautiful comments in regards to this equipment. I HIGHLY recommend it to others, and I will be purchasing a second one next month. 1 recommended suggestion on this product, it does come equipped with a cheap tube, I would suggest getting the Mullard tube for it, and it increases the percentage abit more on audio. You will not go wrong with this equipment. Thank You MusiciansFriend and Presonus for fine equipment.

Comments about PreSonus Studio Channel Tube Channel Strip:

I use this live for my acoustic (Breedlove Solo C350) into a powered monitor (EV SXA250) and also to FOH. VS guitar straight to monitor/board the improvement is pretty amazing. I'm now hearing nuances in the plugged in tone that have been only audible when fingerpicking in my room.

The pickup/preamp system on theses guitars is generally considered pretty good which I can back that up--I A/B'd the plugged in tone of this guitar with a lot of different and much more expensive guitars and this guitar shined. I have in the past used my Eleven Rack set up as a quasi channel strip for it with compression/eq which worked fairly well.

That said, the Studio Channel takes the plugged in tone of this guitar to another level--as it should be being that it is analog and vacuum tube. As much as I love my digital gear there is no substitute for an analog signal path. I'm able to make the guitar sound so much more dynamically interesting through this thing which I suppose is the hallmark of a good preamp. Why bother with an "acoustic preamp" when you could be using one of these? I can't wait to use it for Bass and vocals for recording.

Comments about PreSonus Studio Channel Tube Channel Strip:

My intentions with this unit were to improve the overall quality of my recordings.Feature wise, this unit is great. The compressor works great and is very flexible. Presonus even offers some useful presets in the manual. The equalizer works great as well for boosting some needed frequencies. Both of these are very useful.I had a lot of trouble at first with this unit trying to separate the gain on the Studio Channel with the gain on my EMU interface. I thought that the studio channel was noisy but in fact the gain was set to high on my EMU interface. Once I corrected myself, the Presonus is super quiet. I can record now with virtually no noise. The preamp is great. It has definitely boosted the overall quality of my recordings and just makes the tracks sound more real.Overall, this unit is a great buy and worth the money. It isn't the end all be all of preamps, but for the money it is very useful. If you are using a regular USB or Firewire interface but want one to improve your recordings on a budget, get this unit. This unit WILL take time to dial in and to learn how to properly use it but once it does, it's worth it.

I just purchased this yesterday, I was in the market for a preamp I was previously using the built in preamp on my Fostex MR-8HD but it wasnt sounding good enough, I picked up the Studip Channel because it has a built in tube preamp, VCA Comp, & 3 Bd Para EQ! I plugged it in line between the mic (it also works well with instruments) and my MR8, and it has drastically improved the signel. It is a MUST HAVE for any starting off musician. I am also sidechaining a Presonus Blumax and I have a BBE Sonic Maximizer plugged in line with the line outs of the MR8 and its all running into a Tascam US-122 plugged into Cubase. A very inexpensive production, recording, mixing, & mastering packgae !!!

The difference that this unit makes in your audio tracks is astounding. Granted, if you do not know how to use such a device, or don't even know what it's even for, I suggest you do some reading. The instruction manuals give decent presets.. I made my own based off of the presets. I have used this unit on my snare drum, guitars, bass, and vocals. It has greatly improved the quality of everything going into my audio interface. makes mixing and mastering so much easier. props to presonus for putting everything into one convenient strip.

Comments about PreSonus Studio Channel Tube Channel Strip:

Good quality, but I did upgrade the tube, as recommended by several others, to a better quality Tung-Sol 12ax7 Gold. The unit was in Mint condition as advertised.

Comments about PreSonus Studio Channel Tube Channel Strip:

As the reviewer below me indicates, it does take time to master this unit, but only a day or so if you put some work into it. Nice tube sound, not "clean" it gives you those tube "overtones" that so many love and a few hate, so keep in mind this isn't an Apogee or Blue product that gives you clean recordings, although the recordings are clear and detailed they have that distinct "tube color". If that is why you are looking at this product then go ahead and get it. Certainly the next step is UA and SSL preamps.
