OVERVIEW

Classic tube performance fattens up vocals, guitar, bass, or keyboards.

The PreSonus TubePRE Microphone Preamp lets you add character to your signal by varying the amount of gain and tube drive. A 12AX7 tube in this single-channel mic preamp fattens your signal while dual-servo gain stages let you simultaneously output to your amp and console. Sterling specs include 10Hz-80kHz frequency response, a 94dB noise floor, and >90dB S/N ratio. Capacitor-free circuitry and wide dynamic control give you a big boost without noise. Includes 48V phantom power, phase reverse, 20dB pad, and 80Hz rumble filter. A large VU meter with a cool blue backlight keeps you informed. Balanced/unbalanced and XLR I/O give the PreSonus TubePRE flexibility. Great as a studio direct box.

This is the best sounding preamp I have ever used in this price range. The problem, is that as with all "tube" preamps your sound will detoriate over time, due to the tube losing its capacity. The tube affects both its gain and audio quality, and in this unit there is too much screen voltage being applied, so the tube wears down prematurely (similiar to light bulbs, if too much voltage, they get brighter but quit working prematurely). Normally tubes should last a good 2 years, however this one only lasts 3-6 months. So the maintenance needed to sustain that sound quality is a little extreme. The tubes are cheap, but they really should reduce the voltage and grid current applied to the single tube. 3-6mos life is just too poor.. If they can fix this, (which is an easy fix), it shouldn't be much of a problem.

I bought this to use as a mic preamp. The main thing you want from a preamp for vocals is no or low noise and aural transparency (no coloration).I may have just had a bad one, being that it did fail completely within 2 weeks, but mine had tons of noise and lots of color. So, when it broke, I took it back.I ordered a Studio Projects VTB-1 for the same price and have been blown away with how much better it sounds. You should give it a look before you buy this one.

Dial it in!

By That review guy-W8naR

from Delray Beach, FL

Comments about PreSonus TubePRE Microphone Preamp:

I love this thing. It's all about dialing it in. For example, for my vocals running through a Rode NTK, I leave the drive at maybe 1/8th turn and gain at a quarter. From here I get good warmth but won't distort the signal if I get loud
The drive can give you some cool options, especially with gain down. The -20dB pad is helpful as well.
My first was stolen, so I got another - I am very pleased.
I jumped on the chance to get another.

Prosonus TUBEPre

Comments about PreSonus TubePRE Microphone Preamp:

On top of providing a good deal on a very well-known and broadly-used product, MF did a great job of getting the unit shipped out to me. Very pleased with the unit and the transaction. Have used the unit as a mic preamp and as a guitar boost into a clean amp with very good results. Nice product, has been said, but I'll say it again - all you need in a tube preamp, and nothing you don't need.
24V phantom power, pad, rumble cut (80 Hz), phase invert. Lighted VU Meter.
One difficult screw to open the unit up for a tube swap. Did not like having to putz around with this on a new unit, but I know a few tricks and was able to get past this.
Bought new on clearance for $5 over the cost of a clean used unit.

Warms up the signal!

By Timothy Sharkey

from Nebraska, USA

Comments about PreSonus TubePRE Microphone Preamp:

It warms up the signal of my acoustic guitar. If you play acoustic on stage, I would definitely suggest trying one of these.

I was running my acoustic with a Fishman Thinline 332 piezo bridge pickup into a Fishman Aura 16 pedal, but it was lacking something. The Aura took the piezo quack out of the signal, but my acoustic didn't sound as warm through the PA as it does when I play it in my music room at home. Adding the TubePre provides that missing warmth. Now when I play on stage my guitar sounds just like itself, only louder! :-) No need for a seperate DI, either. I run the 1/4" from the Aura into the input on the TubePre, and then XLR out from the TubePre to the stage snake.

The TubePre also works great on other acoustic instruments equipped with piezo pickups. I have a fiddler friend who uses one and she swears by it. She's the main reason I bought one for my guitar.
Just what you need, nothing you don't.
I would like to see a little better quality 12AX7 come standard. Put a Sovtek or EH tube in there and charge a few bucks more, willya?
It is a great value for the money, and if you really don't like the tube that comes with it, it's easy to change.

Great Little Box!

By James Tingle

from Alabama

Comments about PreSonus TubePRE Microphone Preamp:

Definitely a recommended product. We use this for our main vocals and it hasn't disappointed yet.
The ablility to thicken vocals and remove background noise is amazing! Has a lot of features for a less expensive pre-amp.
The only thing wrong with it is the UV meter. It hasn't worked since we got it out of the box. Everything else works great. This thing is built very well.
The best pre-amp you can get for the money. If you can't afford an Avalon, this is the way to go.

Great piece of equipment

Comments about PreSonus TubePRE Microphone Preamp:

I used this in recording my band's last album. We ran bass, vocals, and occasionally guitar through it, and the sound was excellent. Gave me just the bit of extra warmth I was looking for and it was super easy to use!
Simple and easy to use. Not a whole lot of gadgets and gizmos which keeps set up and changes nice and quick.
I've had this for quite a while now. It has had multiple trips and spills in my portable DAW and I have not had an issue yet.
Great price, I bought it in a package that came with a free condenser mic, so the value was even better!

PreSonus Supreme

Comments about PreSonus TubePRE Microphone Preamp:

In a nutshell, There are way better Tube Preamps out there, like for example by Avalon. But those are mighty expensive. The PreSonus TUBEPre is great for those on a budget.I got one for my home studio, and it's quite awesome.I noticed my vocals were lacking power when plugging the mic straight into the interface. But now with this PreSonus, I get that warm punchy tone. I definitely recommend this to anyone.

A satisfying buy!

By Daniel-_zB7c

from Sacrmanento

Comments about PreSonus TubePRE Microphone Preamp:

I am quite pleased with my presonus tube pre so far. I have used it as a pre for an acoustic guitar and it sounds amazing in comparrison to the digi 002 pre's. There is a small amount of noise in the form of a hiss at higher volumes, but even that is worth the end result.Definetely has a fair amount of extra features such as phase inerting, a 20db pad, and phantom power that help this box get a high score in my book. All I can say, is that this is a great buy.

Just bought it

By Reem

from Charlotte NY native

Comments about PreSonus TubePRE Microphone Preamp:

It does amplify your signal and keeps the noise minimized... I bought it to warm up my vocals but I didnt have time to play with it yet. I only had it for 2 days so I probably shouldnt be doing a review yet.. But it does amplify the signal and keeps it clean but I'm hoping I can get some warmth out of this.
