OVERVIEW

Durable for everyday use and high-caliber for crucial usage.

The Radial JDI MK3 Passive Direct Box is a Jensen transformer equipped, high-quality passive direct box that has the advantage of providing complete isolation for reduced noise. The exceptionally low phase distortion, almost perfect linear response, and low harmonic distortion make the JDI direct box a superb choice for recording or live performance. The rugged construction allows it to be used in abusive environments without concern. The Radial JDI Mk3 is ideal for acoustic guitars, bass, and keyboards.

Considered by many to be one of the finest passive-operation direct boxes available, this Radial DI employs a Jensen isolation transformer for optimum audio performance. 60-cycle ground loop elimination and adept handling of high-output, active instruments and keyboards make the Radial JDI discrete and versatile. Steel I-beam construction, baked enamel finish, and protected faceplate mean Radial JDI is built to survive.

The Radial JDI passive direct box employs the Jensen JT-DBE transformer as its main drive engine. The Jensen DBE transformer employs a laminated nickel core with low-permeability and no magnetic memory, therefore eliminating phase distortion caused by the disruption of fundamentals and harmonics.

The distinctive book-end design protects the switches against damage from abuse by providing a protective zone on both I/O panels. A baked enamel finish resists scratching while a no-slip rubberized pad on the bottom stops the JDI direct box from moving around and aids isolation. Inside, the Radial JDI features compound, welded I beam construction that protects the sensitive electronics from outside stress. The internal skeletal frame is locked together with 4 hex screws.

The input panel features a 1/4" instrument input and traditional thru-put. An innovative merge function allows the thru-put to be converted to a second input to allow stereo to mono summing. This is useful for interface with stereo sources such as keyboards or CD players in live shows where audio channels may be not always be plentiful. The Radial JDI also sports a -15dB pad to interface with higher output levels.

The output panel features a balanced 600-ohm XLR connector with pin-2 hot following the AES specification. A polarity reverse switch toggles pin-2 and pin-3 to allow the JDI direct bpx to interface with older non-AES equipment and for creative tinkering. The ground lift switch disconnects the XLR pin-1 ground from the Radial JDI for 100% input-to-output isolation. A second -30dB pad used in tandem with the -15dB input pad allows the JDI to be connected in parallel with a speaker. This, for instance, allows the engineer to tap the sound coming from a guitar amplifier speaker post-distortion thus adding another creative dimension. This unique function incorporates a speaker emulation filter circuit.

The JDI input features a high 10kOhm input impedance for minimal loading. This makes the Radial JDI ideal for interface with all instruments. The 600-ohm mic level output allows the JDI box to be used with typical snake systems that incorporate bridging transformers (splitters) without fear of overloading them.

As a passive device, the JDI direct box is particularly ideal for use with high output devices such as active or self-powered instruments such as acoustic guitars and basses with built-in battery-powered preamps, and AC-powered equipment such as drum machines, DJ mixers, and keyboards. These devices tend to overload most active direct boxes making them sound thin and edgy. The Radial JDI direct box is capable of exceptionally high signal handling without distortion.

Comments about Radial Engineering JDI MK3 Passive Direct Box:

I use this in my home studio for tracking one instrument at a time -- bass and electric guitar DI into DAW / vst amp sims while simultaneously miking a hardware amp. (I split the signal: Guitar to JDI --> JDI balanced out to mixer; JDI "thru" output to amp for miking).

I bought this Radial JDI to replace a basic DI box I've used for years - this one is much quieter. More expensive than other brands, but I feel it's worth it to have Radial's Jensen version. This may be the last passive DI I need to buy -- thus justifying the one time cost.

I also considered the Radial JDV or JD48 (both active) for electric guitar, but the passive JDI seems to work fine since I'm only sending the signal a short distance. The JDI seems plenty hot with passive pickups and no power source to worry about.

For home studio, I believe it was a worthwhile investment. It's built like a tank.

I got this guy to use as a DI for my Avedis MA5 500 series preamp. Works like a charm - no fuss, no muss. It's a pleasant and significant improvement for my guitar and bass DI uses.

Comments about Radial Engineering JDI MK3 Passive Direct Box:

I have played my RIC 4001, my Fender passive Jazz, my Tacoma Thunderchief and my Fender Bronco student bass guitar through the Radial JDI MK3 and couln't be happier! Tony Levin is right, the clarity of the sound from each of my basses is pure, natural and "just right"! Now I'm going to experiment with 16 or so other guitars and basses. I suspect I'll be equally satisfied!

              Great piece of gear

              By Rob Naquin

              from Houston

Comments about Radial Engineering JDI MK3 Passive Direct Box:

It does what it's supposed to do and does it well. I use it primarily for my acoustic but have also used it when sitting in on bass. I find it doesn't color/change the sound of either instrument. Having used other DIs over the years I would consider this a critical piece of gear
              Simple (and doesn't require power)
Very rugged; have used it every weekend for 3 years and counting
You get what you pay for; this is definitely worth it

              Best on the market!

              By Andybass

              from Connecticut

Comments about Radial Engineering JDI MK3 Passive Direct Box:

I've been playing for a while and finally figuered out about a year ago that I needed something that sends my signal to the PA without any change to the signal and does it reliably. I've had a few DIs before that let me down. I also figured out that the direct out on most bass amps is worthless! This is the best I've seen. It has to be one of the most boring pieces of gear I own, but it is one of the most important, second only to my bass itself. This is the number one tool that will get your sound to the audience Everything else can fail, but as long as this baby works, you're golden. It has the features you need (polarity reverse, ground lift, multiple pads, but none of the things that can go wrong. No phantom power, adapters, or 9v batteries needed. It's also built like a tank. I bought this and we immediately noticed HUGE improvement in the PA sound for my bass. Stop messing around. Get this and you'll never look back.

I have it since last week. I use it with both my stingray bass and the warwick. The change in sound was preety dramatic. Great low end, transparent and powerful sound. My bass sounds great now even on a PA with no subs. It`s simply amazing.I begun with JDI but my shopping list at Radial is preety consistent.

              Best Passive Box on Market

Comments about Radial Engineering JDI MK3 Passive Direct Box:

Clear, Smooth, and Tube-Like is what this box sounds like. Maybe, it's because of what it does not do to a signal more than what it adds. A/B Test with a popular budget DI was like night and day. Added bonus is that it's very versatile. Needs no power.
