Every company has a story, but it might surprise you to learn that in Rode's case, the story began with a struggling electronics business and some custom modifications to imported microphones. When Peter Freedman inherited his father's business in 1987, he thought that adding more products might be able to rescue it - and he couldn't have been more right. Freedman ordered a shipment of microphones and, when they came in, he opened them up and made some tweaks. The result was a sound that some would compare to a rat in a drain pipe, earning it a loyal following and the nickname "Rodent-1". Running with that, Peter Freedman called it the "Rode NT-1", getting the Rode pro audio ball rolling.
Today, it's still picking up momentum. Rode was able to grow out of hand-tinkering into a high-tech powerhouse, designing and building mics entirely in-house. While their roots are kept alive by modern versions of the original Rode NT-1, they've expanded into so many more areas that there's a mic for anyone in their lineup. For instance, if you're a broadcaster or studio engineer, check out the NTK, NT2-A, NT3, NT4 stereo and Procaster dynamic microphones. Need something precise and targeted? You'll be well-equipped with an NTG1, NTG2 or NTG3 shotgun mic. And for the most versatile uses, you can't go wrong with a handheld dynamic microphone like the M1, M2 or S1 Pro.
Do you prefer your recording "on the go?" Rode definitely has you in mind if that's the case. If you record video on a digital SLR camera, start with the VideoMic series. The VideoMic Directional On-Camera Microphone and VideoMic Pro Super Cardioid Condenser Mic are designed to mount directly onto your DSLR, replacing the stock mic with a pro-grade solution. For those who like to use smartphones or tablets, there are even smaller options to choose from: the i-XYL Stereo Microphone and smartLav+ Lavalier.
On top of all the microphones in the Rode pro audio selection, you can also find a big assortment of bundles and accessories. So don't hesitate to dive in and start picking your favorite mics out of this section. There's a reason why Rode has such a solid reputation, and your results will speak for themselves once you've added Rode to your recording system.
