Comments about Roland Mobile Studio Canvas Sound Module and Audio Interface:
I like it. The audio/midi driver for windows 7 works flawlessly. 128 polyphony is nice, it's small and lightweight. The GM2 sounds have two banks classic and contemporary. I use mostly the contemporary sounds they sound richer to me. Are they the best sounds ever? no, but to me they're useful enough so I can mix midi songs quickly and easily and the bounce them to audio in a reliable way. I use Sonar audio software for all MIDI and digital audio recording and editing, Dell Studio laptop with win7.
The Mobile Studio Canvas has tons of features. Recoding interface, Sound Module, Midi interface, inputs for guitar, mic and mp3 players.
The quality is good, plastic but well contructed.
It's really quite a good value for all the different things you can do with it.

See the "Features" section comments. For what I use the SD-50 for, it will be a fine replacement of my SC-88vl.
I just purchased the SD-50 to be able to continue using midi files in my home music recording set up. I have been using an Edirol SC-88vl Sound Canvas in combination with an Aardvark Direct Pro Q10 audio interface for years. I am not a keyboard player, so I used the SC-88vl only to convert good midi tracks from songs into audio (wav) tracks. Then I would manipulate them using various Cakewalk Sonar versions.
I reached my computer capacity (speed, Ram, etc etc) and also decided to upgrade to Sonar X1. In order to get the state of the art computer I needed to go with Windows 7 (or Mac, of course). Unfortunately, Edirol (Roland) has chosen NOT to write a driver for the SC-88vl for Windows 7, so I sought out another midi module.
I have compared the SD-50 with the SC-88vl on my old desktop. I think the SD-50 is better than the SC-88vl. I particularly think the bass, strings, and drums sound more realistic on the SD-50. The piano sound is a wash. Both modules create good piano sound with a slight edge to the old module.
The SD-50 can double as an audio interface as well. I tried it and it does work, although I don't believe the audio sound is as good as my old Aardvark. It's a shame Aardvark went out of business because it is a great piece of equipment. There is just NOT a Windows 7 driver out there that I am aware of.
There is a way to patch a better audio interface thru the SD-50 so that you can hear audio and midi playing at the same time. It is the single stereo "line in" input on the back of the SD-50.
So, I purchased a Roland Quad-Capture to try out. That's another story. I think the Quad-Capture is good, but I wish I could still use my Aardvark. One thing about it is it doesn't have as much potential "output" volume using the knob as compared to the Aardvark. It does well recording into Sonar X1 without as many worries of peaking and distorting as compared to the Aardvark, however. That's a real plus.
Not as sturdy as the SC-88vl. Plastic box versus steel SC-88vl, but I don't use it for gigs like I used to with the SC-88vl.
You probably would have to spend much more for equivalent sounds on a unit that would be larger in size. I am not aware of any other compact device that produces adequate midi sounds.
Comments about Roland Mobile Studio Canvas Sound Module and Audio Interface:
I bought this thing for midi file backing tracks so as to eliminate the use of my laptop. When I tried using it, I found that it added unwanted reverb. This effect is a default setting which can be changed only temperarly. When you advance to the next midi file it goes right back to the default setting and you get reverb.
Comments about Roland Mobile Studio Canvas Sound Module and Audio Interface:
I'd like to echo the comments of the 1st reviewer. I'm a saxophonist who does gigs with tracks from my laptop. When I went to Win7 I could use Roland VSC anymore and couldn't find any softsynth that I liked. I'm glad I waited for the SD50 instead of the Ketron. You get so much more bang for your buck. There's no comparison. I can set up the SD50 to be a backup device in case my laptop goes down. I use midi files and Band in a Box (BIAB). Now I can BIAB mp3's if necessary, I also love the 3 way power, usb/batt/AC. Like the 1st reviewer, I prefer the classic sounds too. I've been using the SD50 on gigs for 2 months with no problems. My only problem is finding the right software to play my midi files. Still searching for what works best for me.
Comments about Roland Mobile Studio Canvas Sound Module and Audio Interface:
I perform as a solo guitarist with MIDI backing tracks, and I have had the SD50 for about one month. I bought it to replace my SD35 that I had been using for about fifteen years. So far the machine has done well for the last six gigs, although it did lock up once, but I turned the device off/on and reset it very quickly. The USB port is a great feature, as it can be pulled out and easily plugged into a computer to tweak and add MIDI files, and nowadays memory is cheap! I prefer the classic mode for the sound module, and I did have to tweak most of my MIDI files as some instrument sound levels were different?? The sounds are sufficient for what I do, it queue's up quickly, and is very quiet. The software was intuitive, and I was up and running in no time. I also like that I can play back mp3 files as well, as I do have some backing tracks in that format. The power switch could be more rugged, and not too crazy about the RCA outputs, seems the box could be a little more rugged, but I do have it mounted in a foam lined case, time will tell. For me, I could not wait for this product to come out, it is perfect for what i do, surprised it took fifteen years to finally replace the SD35?madmusiclimited
