I Wanted to Like the CT1, but just couldn't

By Jeffrey Penick

from Pacific Northwest

Comments about Rolls CT1 Cable Detective:

The CT1 let me down. Battery cover failed immediately, but a little tape was an acceptable fix. But soon I began to have doubts about the XLR connectors--failure indications seemed to be due to the tester itself. Then after 1.5 years of light use, it failed completely. Time for some more shopping.
I liked the range of connectors possible,
Too many failures in this device to say anything positive about the quality.
I expected more for my bucks, and that was a few more bucks than most of the competition.

made real well

Comments about Rolls CT1 Cable Detective:

I was straightening out from the holiday season, holding the CT1 in my hand, testing cables all laid out on the pavement in front of my house. I stepped on a cable that was plugged into the tester, which yanked the tester out of my hand, and slammed it pretty good onto the front sidewalk. Still works perfectly. I have to keep the battery cover on with a rubber band, but hey, thats a pretty tight pcba in there, and darn good soldering on the connectors. As my old neighbor might say, "it's built hell for stout". I hope the next version has a place for DMX512, I think that would be the one Adam West would put in his utility belt.
