e935 vocal mic review

Comments about Sennheiser e 935 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

If you sing live or want to start recording vocals, this is your mic.
I have worked with several excellent female vocalists over the past several years and when all were in need of a new mic, we took a trip to our nearest Guitar Center to compare mics to see which mic worked best for their particular voice. The first vocalist I took mic shopping was an excellent clear toned alto with a powerful voice. We plugged the mic into a simple PA with a good tone setting and started A/Bing mics. We went through all of the better dynamic vocal mics at GC as well as a few hand held condensers. The last two finalists were the e935 and the Beta 58. We found the e935 to be truer to her natural tone. The 58 added a little midrange honk that we didn't like.

A few years later, I took an suberbly soulful, light voiced soprano to the same store for the same test. With her completely different tone and style, the e935 came out on top again.

I turned some other vocalists on to the e935 and they were all sold immediately. Recently I was working on recording a band in the studio. For this particular project, we decided to record the entire band playing at one time and to reduce the bleed, we used dynamic mics for their tight polar pattern. The lead vocalists used e935s and the results were excellent.

I had been using a really nice Beyer m69 that I've had and used for years. After singing through an e935 for the first time myself, I just had to get one too. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best vocal mic out there for less than $200. Perhaps it is the best mic out there.

Highly recommended.
Seems to be built like a tank. I'm sure my alto friend has dropped hers multiple times by now.
Can't buy a better mic at this price point.

Comments about Sennheiser e 935 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

My 28 year old sure SM58 bit the dust, so I thought I would look for something that would overcome some of the problems I had with that mike, even though I loved that 58. I play guitar and sing with 3 guys who all sing louder than I do, I'm the female in the group, and I have a hard time being heard. We play loud classic rock. When I plugged this mike in at practice, everyone was like "WOW! We can hear you!". My other problem was that I sometimes look down at my pedal board while I'm singing and my voice just drops out because the Shure had such a tight unidirectional pattern. The Sennheiser picks me up even when I'm not eating the mike. I did a lot of reading of reviews before I bought it and everyone said this was a great mike for a female vocalist. They are right, I love the way it makes me sound. I highly recommend it, and if it gets stolen, I will buy the same mike again. Just be careful and buy from a reputable dealer, I hear there are a lot of chinese fakes on [@] that look like the real thing.

    Rock solid performer

Comments about Sennheiser e 935 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

I am a 30+ year veteran of live performance. This mic is as durable as they come & sounds GREAT! It has a great smooth sound with no high end harshness or midrange spikes. Very good bass response without being boomy. After a year of use & near 300 gigs It still looks new (trust me, it's seen ALOT of action). It's been Knocked over by drunken bar patrons, fallen from a broken mic clip, & been mis-handled by clumsy stage hands & it has never once let me down. I have been using EV 767s. The 767s sound good & are loud, but have a biting response that causes ear fatigue if you aren't careful. After breaking the fourth 767 by just loading stands in the gig box with it (EVs are the most fragile mics in production today), I decided to try something different. I tried Shure Beta's, AKGs, Beyers & various others. I have a wide vocal range & need something for my solo shows as well as full band performances. The e945 sounds incredible but had too close a pattern for my solo gigs playing guitar & singing. I move around too much. The e935 is great for solo shows. With my band it sometimes picks up the drums or guitars but hey, that is my fault. It's a cardioid pattern & I know my job. If it picks up other instruments it's my fault not the mic. Overall the best performance mic I have ever used in my near 35 years on stage. Give it a good listen before you decide on a mic. Beware of the EVs. They are loud but your sound man better be damn good or your audience will have a hard time listening to you for a four hour show. The "ball" & capsule will also break off easily, not to mention the plastic sleeve will wear out & fall apart or fall off.

Comments about Sennheiser e 935 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

I just spent an hour comparing this mic along with an EV767, an Audix OM5, a Shure Beta 58a and my old SM58. I also set up an AKG condenser mic to use as a "gold standard."

My initial reaction was that the SM58 was dark and muddy and I couldn't wait to upgrade. :-) My next reaction was that the Sennheiser also had a dark and uninspiring sound. But as I went through a few songs, singing one verse on each mic, it really grew on me. Eventually I concluded that while the EV and Audix had more high end sizzle, the Senn was the most accurate and balanced. The real kicker was when I went back and compared to the condenser. Don't get me wrong, the condenser was miles above all these in the openness and clarity of sound, but the Sennheiser was the only one that broke from the pack and moved noticeably in that direction.

After performing some other tests, I found the Senn tied with the EV for off-center response (e.g., when I look down at my guitar), and had the most feedback resistance and least proximity effect. The Beta 58a had a similarly balanced tone, but lacked the openness of the Sennheiser.

Disclaimer, I have a fairly plain, quiet voice, and I'm singing over a thick, loud resonator guitar and a harp player, all in a similar tone range. My goal for a new mic was to help my voice stand out in the mix.

What I found was something that picked up more detail and nuance in my voice than I expected to ever hear in this setting. I'm really looking forward to performing with this thing!

Comments about Sennheiser e 935 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

I've used SM 57 and SM58s for years and never had any complaint. They are excellent mics, however, I must say this 935 mic has some additional clarity or definition I did not know I was missing. This mic is well worth the extra cost.

Comments about Sennheiser e 935 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

The Sennheiser e935 has kicked my Shure Beta SM58's butt! I always relied on Shure Mics for over 40 years until I used this mic... full tonal range from deep low voise to the crisp highs. It picks up the "Sss" & "Ttt" of my voice as if I was hearing for the first time! GREAT MIC !!!

    Sennheiser e935 Review

    By Jonathan Brady

    from Florida

Comments about Sennheiser e 935 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

I would give this mic. an excellent rating. The general contruction is excellent. I will be interested to see if the wind screen will retain it's luster. I perform 8 to 9 times every week.s
I must say that the flat top wind screen seems to get better response and coverage for my style. I move around the mic. a bit. This keeps me more in place.
The quality of this mic. is outstanding. It reproduce's my true voice and diffinity picks up the lows.
I feel this mic. could probably sell for more. However, I think it is reasonably priced.

Comments about Sennheiser e 935 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

I've used the Sure Sm57, SM58, Beta 58, Beta 87, Audix OM7. This is the only microphone that made the cut! I have a super powerful Baritone voice, I needed something that could handle my loud voice without cracking up. I also wanted it to capture the texture on the low range. I've always used a phantom powered condenser microphone in the past. But. I recently purchased a Bose L1-1s system and was having problems with feedback. The e935 took care of the feedback problem, also giving me the great sound that I was used too! JAM on!

Comments about Sennheiser e 935 Cardioid Dynamic Vocal Microphone:

This mic is very hot (aka picks up everything). It's perfect for me, since I tend to sing very quietly. You probably won't want this mic if you're a powerhouse singer, considering it already picks up so much, but it's sound quality is also crystal clear. All around very good mic. Can be used for live performance, or recording.
