e905

Comments about Sennheiser evolution e905 Dynamic Instrument Microphone:

Impressed! I upgraded from the e604's and use them on toms mainly. It's like Sennheiser finally made the MD421 smaller and dumped the lousy clip. If you're a big fan of 421's on toms, you will be pleased using the e905. I still use the MZH604 drum mount on floor toms. On rack toms I find that the LP Claw works well. If you don't need the mounts, it's a good alternative to the e904, if you want to save money. The e905 is a bit snappier than the e904 also, with a 3dB bump around 5k-6k.Convenient size for various placement options. Cardioid. Excellent transient response. My only complaint is that the finish on the microphone isn't nearly as robust as the microphone itself. Especially the blue finish on the inlet basket. However, functionally speaking, I've never had a Sennheiser microphone fail on me. Even my 15 year old e602 that I still use regularly.
Definitely get more than your money's worth with the e905!

Comments about Sennheiser evolution e905 Dynamic Instrument Microphone:

Ok...before I get started on how the e905 sounds I am going to give you guys a run down of my studio and what I use: I own a Mackie 1640i Interface, a 3.4ghz Quad-Core iMac, Universal Audio 710 Mic Pres, Universal Audio Plugg-ins, Sennheiser e604s for toms, Sennheiser e902 kick mic, EV N D868 Kick, Audio-Technica AT-4033 for overheads and of course the Sennheiser e905. To record I use Cubase 5. I really love this mic for the snare and guitar amps. The high end and mids are not as harsh as a SM57 or other dynamic mics, which is what I was using before. As far as plug-ins I use either the Neve 1081 or Neve 1073, UA 1176LN, UA LA2A, and the Plate Reverb (but just a touch of reverb, depending on the musical situation...Rock=a touch of reverb and Metal=not so much). I was having a real hard time getting rid of the harsh highs and harsh mids while recording a Kirsh 13"X7 1/2" Snare with a SM57, no matter what I did EQ wise, Compression wise, or how close or far I put the mic, I wound up with the same problem. It was either too muddy or "Pinggy" sounding. Nothing inbetween, or close to how this Snare should sound. Soooo...then I went out and bought this Sennheiser e905. Problem solved!!! And outside of it sounding really good for this particular application, it sounds GREAT with other snares and Guitar amps! I have yet to use it for bass guitar or other instruments. I am giving it an "Overall" rating of 9 because, while this mic is Awesome! it still isn't my "Go To" mic for every musical problem (but pretty close!). But anyways...if you are looking to get rid of those harsh highs and mids and want an awesome snare sound, this is it. And its under $170! Cheep, compared to the frustrations and problems I was having before. Good luck out there, and I hope that this was helpful!
