I own a small, local, sound for hire company. I have several Shure wireless mics. I was hesitant at first to buy the PG wireless series, but my budget is very limited. Thus I picked up a used PG24/PG58 system. I am very pleased with it.

The biggest secret to STAYING very pleased with ANY of Shure (or other brand) wireless components is...change the batteries before every performance and be sure to use alkaline batteries. I have never met a rechargeable battery worth the cost for wireless mic use.
OK...I figure a 30-45 minute use is not a problem, but WHAT IF the next gig runs over 4 hours? Will you have a chance to step in and change batteries? How long do you wait? 2 more hours? 3 Hours?

The only "con" is the range of the transmitter. I have only had "drop out" at one specific venue, likely due to the design and construction of the venue, not the mic. I find that 100-125 feet is about as far as I trust the PG series. That has never been a problem, after all, you can increase your signal strength in the receiver by putting the base receiver on top of your speaker stack, connecting to the board via a snake...or put the receiver "up high" at the board...and you have about a 100ft circle for the mic transmit range.
The "pros" out weigh that single "con".
I believe the sound quality is certainly adequate for the events that I provide sound reinforcement. We ain't talking Carnegie Hall. For instance...when you are doing a small town street festival, you cannot provide studio sound quality for the typical budget of these events. Only a few people would be able to hear the difference between a PG or Beta mic or a PG or SLX transmit/receive rig with the children laughing on the Moon Walk and the concession trailer just 75ft from the stage and cars driving by on the side street and the event staff driving golf carts past the stage every 10 minutes to take care of one of the arts/craft exhibitors...know what I mean?
I like the versatility of these mics...like and Shure 58 or 57, you can pretty much mic anything with these wireless. I have a wedding booked for this summer where the client wants to mic a violin. I plan to use a PG2/PG58 for that application. I obviously use my mics for spoken word (ministry or political speech, theater, etc.) I have used that same set up for micing Oboe (don't ask), percussion, acoustic guitar (non electric), saxophone, harmonica, piano, drum kits at small events. (You would be amazed what you can do with three PG2/PG58 mics on a drum kit (overhead, snare, kick, yes...you CAN use a PG2/PG58 on kick if it is your only option.) I have also used the PG2/PG58 to pick up the floor sound of Irish dance or taps at dance recitals.
As I said, "versatile".
There is very little if any "hand noise" transmitted from the person holding the mic...the amount of "handling" has a lot to do with that issue...if they are so nervous that then are touching the windscreen, all bets are off. Would I prefer an SM58 element? Yep.
Why buy "just" the mic? Because I already own a PG88 dual channel base receiver that came with one PG2/PG58 and one PG1 belt pack. I find I would get more use out of that rig if I had the second PG2/PG58. FYI, this will give me six handheld mics (four PG2/PG58 and two PGX2/SM58) and I will be able to run up to four belt pack transmitters.
Finally, I am getting the impression that Shure and Musician's Friend may be phasing out the PG and PGX systems in favor of the newer digital models. If you are looking to expand your current inventory's versatility by adding a belt pack or hand held mic...this would be a good time to move that towards the top of your list.

Works as well as the original one that came with the wireless system.Got one for each department in our school. Can only use one at at time on the system but that was all we needed.
