I have been using this in a live venue for more than a year now, mostly on rock music. Sure, it gets the job done, but it just doesn't give you an amazing thump. I never noticed it was lacking until I got to try a Sennheiser e602 and an AKG D112. These other mics took alot less EQ and compression to get you close to that heart thumping bass sound with a good punch. Like I said, it will get them job done. By boosting big at 80ish hz, compressing, and maybe EQing in some more attack, this could get a pretty good kick sound, but I find I often don't have the time to dial it in, and I can't quite get the same THUD with this one. On the plus side, its sturdy as hell, and cheap.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that this mic is the real deal. Dont think that just because it is "inexpensive" that it cant hold its own. Had been using an Audix D-4 (owned by a friend) for recording the kick in a project I am working on. Decided to purchase my own kick mic (as I own all but) and took a flyer with ordering Shure PG-52. Figured if it didn't muster-up, I could return and buy something better. I took it from the package, set it up just inside the off center sound hole in the drummers DW's, set the level, put on the cans and we both were stunned. Nice deep thick punch/click sound that we were having to use EQ to get from the D-4. By the end of the session, and after listening to the fruits of our efforts, it was a givin that the PG-52 had a new home. I think the PG-52 will end up being viewed as a workhorse just like a SM57 or SM58. They should have called it an SM52. Same price, Same quality. Good job Shure.

i was short on cash and bought this instead of a beta 52. i'm still flat out amazed at the quality and performance of this mic. i use it for everything: kick drums, bass cabs, recording. and at this price plus getting the accesories, it's hard to say "no." if you're thinking about buying this, save yourself the gray hairs and get it, you won't be disappointed.

Serves great as a kick mic or bass cab mic. We also used it as a mic for guitar cabs while recording. Great value and very multipurpose.

I just bought this mic, recorded and played live with it. It sounds way better than a regular instrumental shure mic for your kick, plus sounds even better live..but I wouldn't recommend it for serious recording drummers out there, its just not powerfull enough. Overall very well put together mic for the price...
