Comments about Shure UNIDYNE III 545SD Dual Impedance Unidirectional Microphone:
Is there really a substantial difference between the sound of a 545 and an SM57? I don't know; they are certainly very similar and it IS one of the most useful sounds in recording. Where the 545 is different is 1) the on/off switch -- useful when used as a live mike -- and 2) the variable impedance.
The latter is the main reason I have one. It's great to able to plug it into an amp and use it for harmonica or the like. There are times one simply needs that high-impedance quarter-inch connection. And, after all, if you don't find yourself needing that, just set it to low-impedance and use for much the same roles as a 57.

Comments about Shure UNIDYNE III 545SD Dual Impedance Unidirectional Microphone:
I had no idea Shure was still selling this mic, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it here. I had an old Unidyne from the 70s that I had acquired and was using up until a few years ago when it finally died. This mic was incredible on guitar cabs and vocals. It had such a smooth response to everything and didn't have proximity effect that some other cardiod mics have. I bought an SM57 to replace it, but it's not nearly as good. I could stick this thing in front of any cab at nearly any distance and get a superb sound. With the SM57, you have to play around with placement. Overall I love this mic and I will be purchasing another one. Hopefully, Shure is building it to the same specs so it will have the same quality and ruggedness of the original.

Comments about Shure UNIDYNE III 545SD Dual Impedance Unidirectional Microphone:
Don't hesitate to buy this microphone. It is perfect for live or studio applications. Especially for snare drum and guitar cabs.
The on/off switch is just a cool feature that makes it stand out.
This mic is very sturdily built, and can be hit by drum sticks as much as you want!
Don't spend any more for an all around microphone. This mic is the best for snare and guitar cabinets.
Comments about Shure UNIDYNE III 545SD Dual Impedance Unidirectional Microphone:
I've seen the other reviews and can tell you from years of experience- it's a great drum mic. If it wasn't, John Bonham wouldn't have used it live and in the studio over 30 years ago. I still have an old high impedance model from '68!
Comments about Shure UNIDYNE III 545SD Dual Impedance Unidirectional Microphone:
I have found these to be more useful for studio applications and other live applications. In the studio, I have used these for guitar cabinets, acoustic guitars (soundhole and 12th fret), drum overheads (not as good as condensers), snares, toms, and vocals. Live, I have used them on guitar cabinets, vocals, drums, drum overheads, as well as acoustic guitars. I HIGHLY recommend this mic. It reproduces sound very well and is a very "transparent" mic. It has a fantastic frequency response and is more sensitive than an SM57. I would not recommend this over an SM57 for percussion use, but I think it easily surpasses the 57 in vocal reproduction ability. It is better than 57s on guitar cabinets, but I would not recommend it over an e609. However, if you're looking for a GREAT all-purpose mic, buy one or 2 of these. They are great for just about anything and will not sound bad in almost any application (just don't stick it in a bass drum).
