2+ years and no problems

Comments about SM Pro Audio DI-1 Direct Injection Unit:

I'm happy to have a couple of these. They are being used primarily in live audio applications. They're great for stepping up the signal from acoustic players that show up those weak wire attached in the sound hole type pickups. A feature not mentioned in the description are those plastic bumpers. Sometimes if you set an un-named passive DI on top of an amp, you'll get magnetic field line noise likely from the amp's transformer. Those little plastic bumpers prevent DI from coming in contact with the amp housing. The bright blue l.e.d. lets me know that phantom is passing to the unit when I'm 30 feet away from the stage. The xlr input is nice for those keyboard amps that have xlr out, but no ground switch. I've even used the xlr input to step up the output from a ribbon mic so I don't have to drive the console gain so hard. Another plus is that no one has ever tried to walk away with one of these boxes. On the downside: Avoid putting a real hot signal into the DI, as the pad seems to be wired behind the gain stage? (They'll distort a hot signal regardless of pad setting) Perhaps they have lasted this long because I treat them with care. The aluminum housing just doesn't look/feel like something you could pound nails with.

Purchased and returned

Comments about SM Pro Audio DI-1 Direct Injection Unit:

Did not work on arrival, powered on with LEDs but no sound running from XLR in to XLR out other than signal noise which was high. requires 9v battery to run (specifically stated in instructions that this does not run on phantom power as you may believe from the description, just a pass through for what purpose I cannot guess). battery compartment cover is strange, and wiring in battery harness was cheap. Returned without replacement based on all of the above, if the wiring cannot sustain the shipping process then I do not want another one.
