I've also tried(own) Sennheiser HD280 and Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro. Both are great, but do not work for me as well on the job.

I should note I still mix on Yamaha NS-10's for some perspective. The 7506's are the most NS-10 friendly IMO. If you do not like mixing on NS-10's than you may prefer DT770's or HD280's for their low end boost.

For the money they are great and will work in all studio applications.

The Sony MDR-7506 are good headphones. I won't bother with all the subjective sound quality stuff. I just want to provide you the dimensions of the actual opening into which your ear must fit; it is 2.25" h x 1.5" w x .5 inches d. I'm not saying that's too small, but it's too small for me. Doesn't matter how good the product sounds it you can't wear it more than thirty minutes without your ears aching.

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

I'd been using Sennheiser headphones exclusively since the early eighties, but my last pair of HD 280s left me wanting. They were built of sub-standard plastic, which cracked in all of the wrong places with continued use. I was tired of epoxying the parts back together. I needed more metal parts. I was also disappointed with the super-duper sub-sonic uber low frequency response. I use real instruments and the lowest note I play is E on the bass at 42 Hz. Most people can only hear the harmonics, so why do phones go all the way to 5 or 8 Hz!? The results had me 'feeling' rather than HEARING, therefore mixing light on the bass.

...So I got a pair of MDR 7506 Sony phones. WOW. No flubby rubber bass thump, and excellent upper and lower midrange where most headphones lose definition. Compact and light...and with more metal in all of the right places.

Ahhh..... killer sound, durability and luxury. At the same price!

As a recording engineer, my choice for the past 15 years has always been the Sony MDR 7506. The distinct clarity gives me confidence in my mixes not only for recording but also for playback.
The tone quality is so accurate that I have even mixed some projects on these headphones and by passed the studio monitors. They are that good!
Whether you have a home studio, hobbyist or Pro, you will love these Pro studio headphones. The price is very fair for the quaitly you receive. And remember, your final project outcome is only as good as your worse piece of gear. So it really pays to use good/great studio gear. Buy the Sony's, you'll be happy you did.

Great piece to have in the studio, as a reference, for the mid range they rock, low frequency is there too, loud as you can handle, perfect for the reference you need while laying down tracks or practice or recording monitor for musicians, you can get a decent reference to balance your recordings for a great Demo, highly recommended

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

My review is based on using these strictly for music tracking or monitoring. Some people claim these are the goto headphone for recording applications because they have been around forever in studios. I can see why these would be good for editing broadcasting recordings or speech only applications but for music they are way off. I'm not opposed to using Sony for music. I own around 5 pair and prefer their earbuds for ipods and MDR-XB700 if I want high volume without distortion. Bought these for track mixing but the mids and too pronounced. The soundstage puts the mids right in between your ears where cymbals and everything else sounds farther away and are less easy to discern. For mixing it is difficult to separate instruments well. If it weren't for these two things the cans might not sound too bad. Bass is not bad but also right in your ears and kind of scooped around the mid-bass frequency. The more I research the more I understand Sony exaggerates certain freq in each of their models to fit specific purpose. They don't always explicitly state which application the phones fit in their product descriptions so you really have to listen to them in person to determine if they will work for you.In terms of quality, the drivers have never had a problem and no plastic has broken so they are a decent value if they fit your app. Gave them 4stars for quality because the ear pads fall apart almost immediately.

        • Great Radio Studio Cans

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

As a broadcast radio personality, I have gone through a lot of headsets (cans). I have used expensive so called professional cans, and even bought from the local super center. At my last radio station outside the US, everyone shared one set of cans (kind of gross). It was a set of Sony MDR-7506 headphones. My personal set of cans were falling apart, so I tried the MDR-7506. I was amazed at how good they sounded and how comfortable they were. It was no problem to leave them on for extended periods when exterior noise was a problem. The trainee jocks were often rough on equipment, but the MDR-7506's stood up to some pretty severe abuse. The frequency reproduction was so good, that I got a pair to use for off air production. I had several brands of cans to choose from, but the MDR-7506 became my go to reference set. These cans outperform many of the more expensive brands and are a great value at the price. I plan to keep a set of MDR-7506's in my workplace, and at home.

        i hate these

        By mary baur

        from chicago

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

the only redeeming value is the sound which is pretty good for listening to music with than tto mix /record with(which is what these are supposed to be for) .. the build quality and comfort of the headphones is downright atrocious.
the cord is coiled and crappy, the plug is 1/8th inch instead of 1/4 .. the size adjustor thing feels cheap and wiggles way too much.. the "closed back" allows for plenty of sound to bleed out, way too much for quality recordings.

also, im a guy with shaggy/long hair and every single time i wear these things my hair gets stuck in them and they rip my hair out upon removal from my head! painful and unnaceptable.
the quality on these are pretty bad. i bought a pair and the ear things kept falling off practically by themselfs requiring me to spend way too much time putting them back on . also mine broke within a few years of use.. the right speaker just stopped working.

while they worked the sound quality is decent for listening to, innacurate for recording/mixing to.
100 bucks for these? horrible value.

These were a replacement for a similar pair of Sony phones I bought ten years ago. The new ones have too much bass, and I would not trust them for live sound or recording. I guess Sony has to cater to the boom-car generation.

Absolutely the very best headphones I've ever had and heard. The sound quality is unbelievable. If you have a Bose Wave Music System these are the headphones for you. And alot less money than the Bose headphones. I made a great purchase getting these and look forward to hearing every instrument playing on the radio or CD. And Musician's Friend is the place to get these. Their customer service is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm relatively new at mixing. I usually record myself, but have just started doing demos for other solo artists. I used a pair of these to mix and have liked them enough to buy another pair for the artist to use. You have to listen to mixes on other speakers, of course, (car, stereo, etc.), but these headphones get me very close right out of the box. Definitely worth the price.

You can really get things accomplished musically knowing your hearing things correctly and naturally without doubting the source the sound is coming through. A real value.

I really nice headphones, but I had to add on some velour earpiece covers to make them truly comfortable to wear for extended periods. Like any brand new speaker you might buy, these do take a few hours of music playing through them to break in... the suspension has to loosen up a bit for the bass to fully develop, and the treble to mellow out a bit. Fresh out of the box they are a little fatiguing to use. Just play some loudish music through them for a couple days, off you head of course, and that will get them to optimum quickly. They still benefit from some frequency targeted EQ to make them perfect IME/IMO.

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

I bought this item based on the following criteria: Other reviewers stating that they are the industry standard (which I believe they are after a few sessions) AND:

My very own headphone demo comparisons provided by a headphone aficionado who gloats about his collection of (13+) Sennheisers, Beyerdynamics, Shure, etc. In all cases 300 to 600+ (price) range. These Sonys were among the collection. And I got to test them all.

If you feel the need to buy expensive headphones, so be it. I found only one pair of Sennheisers to sound better (300 price range) and it was so slight. Remember, we are looking for accuracy here, as we are interested in "studio monitor". Also, other reviewers had issues with the ear pad coating that crumbles away (same here). The "demo" I tested was equipped (and FIXXed) with these: Beyerdynamic EDT250V Headphone Ear Pads. They fit like they were supposed to be there. WOW !!! enough said.

These are the best Headphone for field recording that I've found. Nice compact & folds up to store. Good fitting comfortable. With the low impedance there's enough gain to hear above the usual noises outside. The frequency response is very bright, which can help outside, but not useable as editing or mixing.

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

I have had these same headphones for 20 years and they still work great. The foam is starting to look a bit funky but still very usable....Def would consider a new pair soon
