In 1997, Soundcraft launched the Spirit FX16 which immediately became popular with its 16 direct outputs and built-in effects unit in wide-ranging applications. Ten years later, Soundcraft has given the FX16 an overhaul bringing it in line with the Soundcraft Professional range using the latest 24-bit, digital Lexicon effects processor and creating the Soundcraft FX16ii.

The Soundcraft FX16ii mixer uses the same AudioDNA processor featured in many of the Digitech and Lexicon outboard equipment including the highly respected Lexicon MX500 processor. With over 35 years of experience, the Lexicon name is among top creators of reverb and processing equipment in the business, ensuring the finest quality effects not usually found in a console at this price level.

The Soundcraft FX16ii offers a combination of powerful live and recording features; each channel has a Direct Output that is individually switch-able pre- or post-fader to enable use with 16-track recording systems. The Lexicon effects work just as well in the live as well as the recording environment with a tap tempo function, 3 parameter controls, user effects settings storability, effects clip LED, and 32 powerful and editable effects to choose from.

The use of the latest PCB surface-mount technology means that the Soundcraft FX16ii fits all of these features into a rugged, compact frame which can be optionally rack-mounted into a 10U space via Soundcraft FX16ii's rotating connector pod which allows cables to be connected conveniently behind the rack and save rack space.

Live Sound: bands, small venues, clubs, conferences, schools, houses of worship

Great small-format mixer

Comments about Soundcraft FX16ii Mixer:

I needed a mixer with onboard effects for small gigs. I run the FX16ii through two JBL 315 Eons, and it sounds great--very precise, yet rich and full and warm. This is a very musical board--the EQ section is top-notch (sweepable MID), and, if dialed in properly, the effects are decent enough. The signal routing is plentiful and the premaps sound great.
One of the key reatures this board has is the Direct Ouput on all 16 channels (and they are all pre/post fader swithcable). I figured, since I was in the market for a new mixer, I might as well get one with direct outs for recording purposes. Now I can run sound and get a multitrack recording of the show. I've done this twice with great results.

One feature I wish it had is pads on the mic channels.
I've had it for six months and it seems very well built.

One negative thing I would say is that there is not enough resitance in the sliders. They move very easily and can accidentally be moved by the lightest touch. I was using it over the weekend, and when I leaned over it to check some connections, my shirt moved some of the faders. Not a big deal, as long as you are aware of it.
It was a bit more than I wanted to spend, but for all of the feaures you get, it's probably one of the best deals in it's class.

Comments about Soundcraft FX16ii Mixer:

I am updating my previous review. Everything I said is still true except for the effects.

My effects unit stopped working. I contacted Soundcraft and they wanted to sell me a new effects circuit board. The effects unit accounts for over 30% of the entire cost of the mixer?! Craziness.

I will say that Soundcraft technical and customer support was helpful and quick to respond. They sent me the schematics for the effects PCB, and I am having a third party look at it. I'll post an update if/when I get it fixed.

The rest of the mixer still functions great, just no effects.

Effects quality

Comments about Soundcraft FX16ii Mixer:

I love the flexibility of the rear plug in panel however, the on board effects did not work well for me as I could not get them to work properly without turning them almost all the way up and then they sounded terrible. I would still recommend an outboard effects processor.

Comments about Soundcraft FX16ii Mixer:

One of the things I needed was a mixer board in which the plug-ins could be rotated behind or under the board. This mixer had both.
I do have one channel which is real noisy for some reason? Has a lot of static on the gain?
Also, the FX are somewhat difficult to learn to blend and use well without a lot of tweaking. I still prefer to use outboard FX for this reason. Other than that, it works well and is a good match with my JBL's and Carver power amps.
