OVERVIEW

16 mono inputs to a stereo mix output and 6 auxiliary sends.

This Soundcraft GR2R 16 is a 19" rack-mountable mixer designed specifically for smaller installations. The GB2R 16 is ideal in churches and cramped performance venues, or for small portable PA systems. The compact GB2R mixer is also welcome in broadcast where its high quality and feature set make it a lot of friends.

As with all Soundcraft consoles, operational simplicity, clear and intuitive layout and the highest possible audio performance are at the forefront with the compact GB2R. The Soundcraft GB2R mixer inherits both the GB30 Mic preamplifier and GB30 Equalizer designs from the GB4 and GB8.

For ease of installation, the connector section is contained in a rotatable pod, allowing cable access from the top of the mixer, if set on a tabletop, or from the rear when mounted in a 19" rack.

Every input has a pre/post switchable direct output for recording or effects sends, while an internal universal voltage PSU avoids external power supply connections.

The whole GB Series carries the high quality hallmark with which Soundcraft is synonymous, with the engineering and design you expect from this high-end manufacturer. Careful attention has been given to the mechanical construction to ensure reliability and ruggedness under strenuous conditions, with all input modules constructed with individual vertically-mounted PCBs, fitted to the steel chassis front panel with individually-nutted potentiometers.

Great sounding Mixer - I use with 16 Track analog recorder MS-16 1" 15ips. A/B mix compare to a 1604 and this thing sounds so great. Had to push the EQ and it's nice. I've owned A&H Mix Wiz(1/2/3), Mackies (1604,1608,2408), Tascam 420 in the past.

        I use for analog mixes - sub groups would be nice ( 1608 / 2408 ).
Only complaint would be the light meters are closer to the next fader.

Comments about Soundcraft GB2R 16 Compact Mixer:

Let me start by saying I always use Musicians Friend because of the excellent service and fast delivery. However, after rack mounting this product in my studio, I found that the lamp output was not providing voltage. From comparing to the user manual, the 4-pin Littlite lamp output was installed upside down. Whether or not this caused the issue, I'm not certain. (Everything else worked great. The mixer's sound and functionality is pristine.) Disassembling my rack, repacking, and shipping a 20 lb box was not how I wanted to spend my Saturday. I am disappointed that this product was not tested before being sold. This experience with Musician's Friend did not live up to my great previous experiences.

Comments about Soundcraft GB2R 16 Compact Mixer:

This is an excellent mixer. I'd even go as far as to say it is probably the best rackmountable mixer in this price range. IMO, it is slightly better than the comparable Allen & Heath 16:2 (which is better for live sound, but not quite as versatile), and infinitely better than any Mackie board in this price range (though more expensive). The amount of functionality Soundcraft was able to pack into this little mixer is truely astounding. I use it both for professional recording and live sound applications, and thanks to its pre-fader direct outs I can do both at the same time. It also has 6 aux sends, line-ins for every channel (so you can use this as a summing mixer if you want), a 4-band parametric EQ on each channel, and a number of different routing options. Overall this is just a fantastic board and I highly recommend it. My only beef with it is only a partial beef. The high-pass switch on each channel engages a pretty extreme cut, -18 dB/octive at 100 Hz. This is very useful in live situations (more so than the standard -12 dB/octive at 80 Hz most mixers have) but less so in the studio. However, in the studio you most likely have a variable high-pass filter on your plugin anyway so this is not so much a slight against the mixer as it is something to be aware of.

            Fantastic Board

Comments about Soundcraft GB2R 16 Compact Mixer:

I've been using this board for a year now and am a huge fan. I've also used an A&H MixWizard for about 10 years. In comparison I find the pres on this board to be more transparent...very clear sounding and the EQ is smooth. Not necessarily better than the A&H, just different. What sets this board apart are the incredible routing options. Solid construction all around, and definitely worth the money.
The routing is what sets this board apart from its competitors. Very flexible and a ton of options for live sound and/or recording.
Very solid piece of gear. The pots and faders feel very similar to the A&H MixWizard, which I also own.
Can't beat it for the price.

            Soundcraft GB2R 16

            By David Nichols

            from Pinehurst, NC

Comments about Soundcraft GB2R 16 Compact Mixer:

The only reason it doesn't score a 10, is the lack of groups on this board, but you got to spend double this amount too get to that level in a board. Don't go for the so called named brands, the quality and ruggedness is not there compared to this board. Take a good look at the Soundcraft, and I'm sure you'll be as pleased as I am with this solid product
I originally purchased the A&H ZED 24, and was not satisfied wth the output options, and MF was kind enough to allow me to exchange the unit for the Soundcraft. This board has amazing output options, with tons of flexablity. I especially was drawn to the direct outs, as this will allow me to output to digital in the future where as the ZED only allowed me to output the entire mix too USB.
My next board will be a soundcraft, solid construction, easy layout, rotating pod for the studio and on the road in a rack. If you are considering a board in this price range, this is a no brainer. The 4-band, Sweepable Hi-Mid/Lo-Mid is a major plus, as I am a Drummer and it allows me to fine tune my Toms perfectly.
Amazing Quality, You can feel and see the difference.
Great features and quality for a board at this price point.

            A Happy Sound Engineer

            By Zitas Mobile Sound Systems

Comments about Soundcraft GB2R 16 Compact Mixer:

I purchased my GB2R here in San Luis Obispo back in June 2010. I have been very happy with the features, the feel of the sliders, and the overall feel of the pots, and the fit of the board in my road case. I use 2 DBX 231 eq,s A DBX Drive Rack, and an Alesis effects processor, a seperate Soundcraft EPM8 mixer for a seperate mix just for the drums, I also have 2 sets of Jbl MRX 515s for mains, and 2 sets of JBL JRX 18s for subs and 4 sets of JBL JRX 112m monitors powered by 8 QSC 1850 Amps. I recently did a show for Andrew Bees and Black OHURU, and on the 24 th of October I did a concert for Darrell Mankins, and I recieved nothing but praise at how wonderful the sound was! Between the Mixers and the DBX Drive Rack auto eq system I am more than pleased with the 2 Soundcraft boards! Spend the $ and dont buy cheap mixers, they will only let you down in the end during a Imporntant show! Then your name is mud in the sound field!

            Great high-quality mixer

            By Brian C---NCT

            from Los Angeles

Comments about Soundcraft GB2R 16 Compact Mixer:

The GB2R is a significant upgrade over the typical Mackie, Behringer and Alesis stuff. It's more about the parts quality than anything else. Anyone who has owned one the various incarnations of Mackie 1604 or other clones knows about the (lack of) quality of the parts and the finite life span. They have cheap potentiometers and switches that start to go intermittent and crap out after a short time leaving you with audio dropouts in the signal change. You can actually feel the pots wearing down as they feel different and get a little wobbly, then you start brabbing them and twisting them back and forth to 'wake' them up. Same with the push switches... you start clicking them in and out aggressively trying to get signal ;) Once this happens you're pretty much toast, no matter what anyone tells you you can't open up the mixer and clean teh parts. The GB2R has a very good build quality. It is immediately apparent when you touch the controls. The faders are smooth and all of the rotary potentiometers are collared to the top panel of the mixer, are sealed, and have a smooth feel. This is a build quality improvement that is easy to see with this mixer as well as the Allen & Heath MixWizards. They will last much longer than the other crap, simply the raw parts are superior. As far as sound quality the GB2R is good. It is mainly marketed for sound reinforcement but I use it in the studio, as I assume many other do too. I use mostly line level stuff so I don't have much of an opinion of the preamps and noise levels. The EQ is very useful, it has sweepable hi-mid and lo-mid and sounds very good. It fits nicely in my KK Audio mixer rack. I also like to have all my mixer connectors either on the back or the bottom of the unit. The GB2R lets you fold the connector pod under so they face the bottom. It takes a little longer to rotate the pod than on the old mackies but you only do it once. Having the connectors effectively on the bottom can be adventurous as you have top get upside-down if you need to re-patch some connections. For me it's worth it versus having the connectors all on top. As far as other features it has everything you would expect on a 16ch mixer with a few additional routing options. The only addition I could use would be an extra Aux return. One difficulty I have had is that the peak, presence, and pfl LED's for each channel are closer to the fader to the right of them than to the fader they actually correspond to which are to the left of them; each channel strip is outlined but when quickly glancing I sometimes grab the wrong fader. I don't do any live mixing so not a big deal but I still find I do this sometimes even after using it for over a year.
