I bought this to replace some stolen PA gear. I was hesitant because of a couple of bad reviews but figured at worst I could send it back. I will be keeping this. There are a few things to mention. If you have high output microphones, you must use the 20db pad on the first 4 inputs or it will distort. I am sure that is where one reviewer had problems. 5-8 were fine with my mics. Also you must use speakers that are within the specs for the gig rack. I play mainly in a 6 piece Rock, Blues, and Country band and this thing is plenty loud. We are a loud band with 2 guitars running 50 watt amps. We have 5 vocals, a saxophone and a keyboard going through pa. Here is how I set it up. The mains are up about 3/4 of the way and then the individual channels are turned up until loud enough to cut through the mix. Its as simple as that. The effects sound good. The fan is loud when you are home in a quiet house, but in a crowded bar you can't hear it at all. The system is also very quiet. As loud as I had it, during breaks, there was no speaker hiss or anything like that. The only thing that would make this unit better is instead of a 20db pad button, give us an input gain knob for the channels, or at least a couple of choices for the input gain. All I can say is I highly recommend this pa head.

The speaker resistance is critical to get maximum "punch" from this amp.
I sold mine.
The coolin fans are so very noisy, but, these fans are very important to keep the output trannies & the weird power switching (110 volts to feed the amp) system, cool (or it shuts down)-(almost instantly). Put this amp down a little heavy & the cooling fans are stopped by all the meatal case around them (very close for some reason). Once I realise all this, I was happy with the amp. A decent pair of speakers (at 4ohms per speaker box) made this amp a giant slayer.
I got sick of strippin it to free the fans, so sold it with all the warnings.
EQ is almost perfect with all knbs sraight up, but I must state again the seakers must be 4 ohms per side (2 x 8ohms in parallel each side).
Pretty good quality with impressive face plate, great feeling knobs with smooth resistance feeling.. Light weight, plenty impressive sound with good speakers (4ohms per side).
Big plastic box slides around too much, left the rubber mat somewhere, but its almost waterproof (if the right way up in the rain).
Ive had more reliable 1000 watters, but not many so very portable..

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

I bought one of these to gig with for karaoke. I figured hey:what a lightweight powerful easy to transport sturdy looking PA. AND its a Soundcraft to boot. First off let me explain, I ran 2 Peavey PR15's which I checked with a multimeter that run at 7.2 and 7.44 Ohms respectively. So, speakers are in check and so are the cables. as well as the IEC power cable providing good power at 114 VAC.Utter fail. The first one worked well for around 7 months, 3 nights a week, 4 hours a night. Then while playing a gig, all of the sudden, the entire amp shut down. It was in a failsafe protect mode, and the clip light was lit up and would put out a TINY and I mean TINY reproduction of sound when both the channel and the main volume were both turned all the way up. So, I took it back and got another one.Second one worked fine for around 2 months, and then after gigging with no problems on Friday and Saturday night, a friend called to ask me if I could cover her gig for her. No problem, or so I thought. I went in, set everything up, turned everything on, and what happened but absolutely nothing. This amp it seems was in protect mode as well. Sooooo... I took it back yet a 2nd time. Got a new amp. Again, while out playing a gig the amp failed. This time, I took it into a reputable shop since I had no money to buy a brand new one. Lets hope they fix it. I will probably sell, and buy something else as soon as its in working order. The second time it failed, I scrimped and saved and bought what I considered to be a less desirable product, the Behringer PMP3000. I have to say, it blows the GigRac out of the water, in terms of headroom, and effects, and number of channels, and features, and clarity. The only reason I have the GigRac in the shop is for purely a backup amp, should I be DJing a wedding and need it in dire circumstance. If you google "Gigrac 1000st major problems blown" theres an electronics forum with all the information on what was/is wrong with it. Support I will say from Harmon International has been PHENOMENAL!

No problems

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

I've been using this for almost two years and thus far have had no problems, (light weight & easy to set up) altho' I haven't used it extensively or pushed it very hard. I'm currently using it for my acoustic band and mic'ing everything including upright bass-very clear transient response and punchy bottom-end. At first I was concerned about it not being loud enough, then I replaced my Peavey 16 ohm speakers with JBL JRX115's and WOW what a difference. I've also used it as a power amp with my 16-ch mixer for an outdoor large venue - very clean and loud and had no issues from running it for 5 or 6 hours continuously. The cooling fan is loud in a small quiet setting like a church but inconsequential for club use. I'm surprised to have read some very unfavorable reviews here but realize its the nature of the beast with Chinese-made gear...I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Based on other's negative experiences, I would neither recommend nor discourage anyone from buying it. Based on my own experience, I'm very pleased.

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

I had this PA for a couple of weeks and have used it out 2 times. It is a pretty easy item to tote around. Controls are logical and easy to figure out.The fan is quite powerful and keeps it running cool, but it is also quite loud. There seems to be a fair amount of speaker hiss present when I have keyboards plugged into it but with just mics and preamped acoustic guitar it is very quiet. The effects are good in general I've only used reverbs. There are a lot of options for additional amps/speakers and mixers provided.

Great powered mixer!

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

I recently purchased this unit and could not be happier. This easily covers a good sized group of people. I think it would also be a great monitor in a larger set up and intend to use it that way.The inputs are very well thought out. The first four have a higher gain. The last 4 are less and for good reason. I can plug in my Line 6 X3 live and not have to mess with gain issues if I use the lesser gain inputs. My mp3 player plugs in great and acoustic guitar sounds great in the lesser gain inputs. Less feedback with the guitar.I LOVE the separate mono mix. This has been something I have wanted for a long time, but didn't want the setup hassle. I can get set up and playing in less than 30 minutes. Even faster if I really focus on it. It is practically plug and play. I like the delay effects, but wish there were more than provided. It suits my needs. I found no trouble with EQ at all. Also, I dropped this before my first gig and it fell hard on cement. The hard case did its job!!! I have had no trouble and was amazed!!You can't go wrong with SoundCraft equipment. They really know what they are doing. For the price you get good volume, good effects, good EQ and no setup headaches.

I bought this head in october of this year my band and i play out aprox. 2-4 time a month and reherse 1-2 times a week. I use this for every gig and rehersal it's yet to let me down. it is important that you use the correct speakers im powering 2 15" JBL JRX115's (soundcraft recomends these speakers)for this head. keep in mind i use this for lead and back up vocal's only, once in a while i will plug in my acustic guitar but over all this is by far one of the best heads i've used.

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

Hi, reviewed this (gigrac 1000st) about 3 years ago after I bought it for my niece to use in her band. They have used it live a few times and used it as a practice pa for all those years without a problem. My niece says it's loud and clean. They are all good musicians with some members even in the Jazz program at University in Montreal. They recorded a cd using it in the spring of 2008 at an Alberta University radio station. It's served them well. As for my purchase, it was well justified, and I have no buyers remorse!

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

I solo around wineries breweries and coffee houses, this amp has power in reserve for all these gigs and seems to be set up pretty near correct with all the knobs pointing straight up (using condenser mics). I would have liked a sterio FX section (it's mono) and a seperate volume control for each internal amp (like most others)instead of having to swing all the "panning" knobs, this is a problem when giging indoors as you don't always have choice of speaker position. The whole unit is surprisingly light to carry and I have never payed so little for a "hard working" amp. Thanks again Musicians Friend, for great prices. Ps, I need a new "guild" guitar, as my old Yam is getting a bit rough.

Nice Compact Unit

By Anonymous

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

I've finished a couple weekends of gigging with this box. Observations: very compact, runs cool..fans are quiet, case is slippery and they give you a rubber matt thingy to set it on so it doesnt slide around...sure I'll put something on the case so I don't have to deal with that,. Signal path is quiet..including EQ. Reverbs are ok..but no lexicon...some of the effects are noisy if you turn them up. Amp section is strong. Overall, a nice piece for the money.

Since my last review, Souncraft has contacted me, assuring me they are working on the Chinese issues. They also offered to make amends of the situation. The rep was very courteous and understanding. Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

I've had this product for about a week and played one gig last weekend. What I like: very compact, color coded knobs, nice eq, flexible I/O, plenty of power, SUPER QUIET signal path. What I don't: hard to read labels, limited effects, no handle, you have to turn on effects EVERY time you power the unit up... it defaults to OFF. Overall, it's a great product at this price point... they can make it better with a few minor tweaks.

I have had mine for 3-4 years. Used it in a band I was in, band broke up a year and a half ago, decided to DJ & host Karaoke. Never any problems (knock on wood). Still using it. Currently pushing 2 Peavey 115 speakers, 2 Yamaha 112 speakers. Performing 3-5, 5 hour gigs a week. I am, and have been very pleased with this unit. Am going to buy another one to set up a second rig within a month.

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

We Are using these board/amps to drive a stage main/monitor PA and a 70volt house system, here in key west. It's GOOD to have a simple to use system, as (most) musicians for Most Part, are not sound engineers, they are musicians. A true soundman should "Paint the Air" with the musicians music. A cheap, easy to use, clean sounding pa on a island that could get blown away in the next hurricane, PRICELESS!Less is More!

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

Small, light, powerful, lots of features, clean sound, good quality effects, and best of all, an excellent value at $499 if it holds up. I'm in an Irish/Celtic duo, and the 1000ST is perfect for us.I was lead to believe the Gigracs are designed and manufactured in Britain (which nearly made me look elsewhere), so was very disappointed to find out they're made in China. Britain....China.....it's a double-edged sword for me. I've had many problems with products made in both places. British automobiles...forget it. Chinese electronics....ouch. In fact, the is my second 1000ST. The first 1000ST I purchased went out with a snap, crackle, and pop after only 3 hrs use. Thankfully, it wasn't during a gig. But Harmon Pro sent me another one immediately, and so far, it's presented no problems and is peforming great. Excellent customer service at Harmon Pro.I think all similar products are being made cheaply, and it's difficult to find any consumer product that isn't made (or partly made) in China. If this thing holds up for a few years and continues to produce the clean sound we're hearing currently, I will indeed have realized a great value.DC

Gigrac 1000st

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

My niece has started a band, she's 17 and needed some way to hook everything up and amplify it, especially the vocals and keyboards. When I was researching what to get her, I kept looking at the gigrac 1000st, but I was confused by some reviews that suggested there were only 4 real channels that one could use, the other 4 were line level only channels, and that these were useless.I even e-mailed the president of soundcraft, who responded and got the American distributor to reply. He basically said you just had to choose a little more carefully how you configured things. The first 4 channels have higher gain (though they are also padded (-20 db) and phantom powered), then the last 4 channels. The way my niece configures everything is; first 4 channels are mostly mics. or you could plug in acoustic electrics or even electrics, though anything with a preamp is probably a line level signal, so acoustic electric is plugged into channel 5, banjo with pickup and preamp/DI is plugged into channel six, keyboards straight into channel 7 or 8 where you have stereo inputs. I suppose you could mic an amp on channel 7 if you so desired. So, it's not really to hard to use all eight channels if you desire. I don't want to get too long winded on connections here, but I felt it needed to be cleared up, since it greatly confused me at first! As to the sounds, she runs the gigrac through 2 Jbl Jrx 112m, which I've already reviewed here, and it sounds great. All in all powerful, portable, cool looking, sounds clean and loud, has good effects and has good monitoring capabilities and I've had great response from the company, so if it fails at some point, I'm not too worried.

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

I bought this amp about a year ago so I've had some time with it. I really like it over all. It has very a quite tone not much humming, it has all the power my band needs. And we send everything into it and most importently we send my guitarist halfstack into it and it sounds great. We have two towerspeakers to it and there are two 15" speaakers in each. Well over all it is a great product and I would recommend it to anyone.

Great Little Unit, but......

By OcalaMusician

from Ocala, FL

See all my reviews

Comments about Soundcraft GigRac 1000st Powered Mixer:

I just got this unit and had my first gig with it. Even after reading the manual and knew what the input section was designed to do. I really did not like the fact that Soundcraft made decisions for me as a Musician/Soundman. The first four channels are high gain enough for vocals and acoustic guitar without a DI, then it goes down in gain for the next two so anything not sending a line level signal is not going to ever get loud enough, then the last two inputs are padded so much that anything other than a CD player or something like that won't even come close to being heard. So I give it high marks for being what it is and sounding great no matter what some other reviewers have said. I just do not like being tied down to Soundcraft's ideas of what I should use and how many of each type I can use. If they made the inputs the same across the board and just put pad buttons on each channel - it would be perfect. I may decide to send it back and go spend more for the Mackie 808M.
