I've been using SX for a couple of years and waited till Studio 4 came out before buying anupdated version. It has great sounding plugins and features that are amazing, but....Cubase 4 and Studio 4 no longer support Direct X plug-ins. Thus my old SX projects with direct x plugs are crippled when loading studio 4 (the old plugs are missing), also my favorite direct x plugs are useless when using 4. However you can on your own find some wraps that will support x via CB S4. Also Cubase Studio 4 gutted the input channel on the Mixer page. This feature allows you to print eq and plugs to disk while recording, thus freeing up CPU power for later plugs and eq. This was a huge disappointment for me. I researched this product before buying and would have liked to have known this before makeing my final purchase. Setting the inputs to my interface is now more confusing with CB S 4, but is managable. On the plus, it does sound great and does a lot.
Got Cubase Studio 4 in a week ago and have played with it some what. First the warning. Cubase 4 and Studio 4 no longer supports direct x, which cause my old Cubase SX files not to work properly if it had old dx plugins. It would have been nice to be forwarned. Also you will need to download a bug patch from Steinberg. Currently I am having no noticable problems. The good news is it has new higher quality VST3 plugins, also super awesome Halion plugin in with fantastic sound quality. It has a new darker look that is easy on eye fatigue. I rated it 10 overall considering what all it does for the money. The hardware version of all Cubase Studio 4 does would have costed 10s of thousands of dollars just a decade ago. The Studio 4 does not seem like a stripped version, you lose surround sound, studio console ( which is great if you are creating a full fledge studio, it supplies separate headphone mixes) and numerous plugs. Checks steinberg's web site to compare. Overall I'm glad I purchased Cubase Studio 4 it exceeds what most musicians and project studios will ever need.
