Inputs and outputs as far as the eye can see
The UR824's front panel hosts two Neutrik combo TRS/XLR connectors for balanced microphone/line input with switchable 48 volt phantom power and Hi-Z, pad push buttons for signal attenuation, gain controls with peak indicators. On the opposite side there's a single output level rotary knob that allows you to easily adjust the levels of the eight line output signals alongside two headphone connectors, each with a dedicated level control. The output signal to be controlled by the front panel rotary is selected through the software.

The rear panel provides six Neutrik combo TRS/XLR inputs and eight analog balanced TRS outputs as well as two pairs of optical ADAT inputs and outputs. Also on board are two BNC connectors for -switchable word clock input and output. Developed by using advanced technologies to offer seamless scalability, this mixing and recording interface offers options to expand the number of analog inputs and outputs across the system via ADAT to provide up to 24 input and output channels.

Why URS Series?

Excellent sound, swift workflow
The UR series offers recording and production solutions for ambitious musicians and professional engineers alike. Connections required for studios such as word clock, S/PDIF and ADAT plus a range of Neutrik combo connectors on the UR824 and routable TRS I/O on the UR28M (#H77573) are at hand. Also on board are EQ and compression tools in the form of the Sweet Spot Morphing Channel Strips on each channel, not to forget the REV-X plug-in that provides quality reverb for modifying the intricacy of a sonic space. The UR824's eight line outputs offer full support for surround productions up to 7.1, while the UR28M (#H77573) allows for up to 5.1 surround with its six line outputs.

Crisp, crystal-clear sound
The audio quality of the UR interfaces is absolutely stunning due to its state-of-the art convertors and studio-grade preamps. The UR824 features eight of the latest generation of Yamaha microphone D-Pre preamps while the UR28M (#H77573) comes with two D-Pres. Each discrete Class-A analog mic preamp utilizes an advanced Inverted Darlington circuit design and boasts a -26 dB Pad selector as well as 48 volt phantom power. The result is a sumptuously smooth and richly detailed sound normally only attained by preamps costing many times more; the outstanding sound of these mic pres obviate the need for all but the rarest vintage preamps.

Just as important as the preamps are, of course, the converters behind them. The UR824 includes first-rate A/D and D/A converters that offer absolutely crystal-clear sound that portrays the sound with astonishing precision and clarity.

Cubase or not Cubase
To unleash the full potential of each UR interface, you needn't employ Cubase as the DAW of choice, but there are undoubtedly certain benefits that remain unrevealed to non-Cubase users. That's why a streamlined version of the award-winning Cubase music production system is included with both the UR824 and UR28M (#H77573).

Combining the UR series with Cubase offers advantages such as full integration into the Cubase user interface for a smooth workflow. But there are plenty of reasons to take a closer look at the UR824 and UR28M (H77573) no matter what DAW you're on. Included are ASIO and CoreAudio drivers for full compatibility with any DAW application using either of these driver standards. The dspMixFx DSP mixer runs on Mac and PC and handles all aspects of DSP, routing, monitor mixing in one easy-to-navigate interface.

Comments about Steinberg UR824 USB 2.0 Audio Interface with DSP FX:

I switched to the UR824 when I made the move to Cubase 7 under Win7 64-bit. It's great to have all of the interface functions controllable within the DAW. The interface set itself up in Cubase for the most part and has been rock solid as long as the instructions are followed and the interface is booted before the computer. Failure to do so results in the interface not being recognized by Cubase.

The preamps are very clear and uncolored with plenty of overhead. The UR824 is simple to configure and I love having two headphone outs. The display on the front tells me all that I need to know. The unit is built extremely well and the buttons and knobs feel solid and are very tactile.

The only improvements that I would make are to have 5-pin MIDI ports, but that is a personal thing. Phantom on every channel instead of pairs would also be nice to have. In addition, an expanded LED display for channel levels would be a good upgrade.

However, these are small points in the scheme of things. I'm very satisfied with my purchase and give it 5 stars.

      Best kept secret!

Comments about Steinberg UR824 USB 2.0 Audio Interface with DSP FX:

I have owned an Apollo by UA, apogee interfaces and just about every presonus interface they make. If you are not going to go top tier with a lynx or something along those lines, the steinberg ur824 is about the best sounding interface I have heard! I sold my Apollo quad and purchased a Uad satellite quad FireWire to run my favorite UA plugins. I couldn't be more sincere when I say the ur824 rivals just about any interface even close to its price point and beyond. I love the 8 xlr/trs inputs instead of apollo's 4 xlr only and the rest trs. This allows me to use my Mogami 8 channel xlr snake to route my mics during tracking. The headphone outs are exceptionally clean with plenty of volume and the ur824 plays very nicely with both pro tools and studio one pro 3, which is what I use for recording. I have been using the ur824 for 4 years now and still haven't found the need to purchase and replace it with anything else. I use the classic API preamps in place of the existing preamps but I will say they are clean and stellar sounding. If you are looking for a pro sounding interface that is reliable, works well with every major daw program and has plenty of in/out routing options, this is your choice. You will not regret it!

Comments about Steinberg UR824 USB 2.0 Audio Interface with DSP FX:

This thing runs great on my w7 64 bit cubase system. I had it up and tracking within 30 minutes. This unit has fantastic software mixer integration within Cubase. There is a standalone mixer you can use outside of Cubase, which is ok, but not as nice as the Cubase native environment. MAKE SURE YOU UPDATE FIRMWARE!!!!! Things were wacky with latency before updating firmware. It is easy to do, and it changes many things (all good things). Do this immediately after installing. Also, in Cubase, make sure you widen your mixer channel view so that the hardware inputs can be used. There is a tiny little graphic of a 3 way switch on the far RIGHT side of the hardware mixer channel. You can't see if if you have your channels too narrow. Those are my words of advice with this interface. If you are decent at Cubase, this is a real breeze to use, Yamaha guitar amp plugins sound fantastic, REV-X reverb is very useable as well. If you use Cubase control room, you can have 2 different headphone mixes, which is obviously a thing many people will need (I have a vocalist who NEEDS to monitor himself very loud while tracking). This has everything a home studio will need. When I eventually get an Ipad, the UR824 is CC, so it can boot up to accept Ipad for mobile multi tracking. If I ever need 16 tracks, I will just but a set of 8 preamps with adat, or buy a second UR824 and link. This is a smart interface. I had some drama with a defective unit at first, but steinberg tech support called me first thing in the morning to walk me through it. He helped me determine that it was defective. MF was great about doing the exchange first. They were out of stock, so I sadly had to wait, but I'm glad I waited and didn't opt for the cheaper focusrite scarlett or presonus unit. This also won out vs the Roland 8 channel usb. If you use Cubase and need 8 channel usb, don't even consider another interface. This is what you want.

Comments about Steinberg UR824 USB 2.0 Audio Interface with DSP FX:

When you pay a Premium Price for a product you expect Premium Performance.
This unit does not deliver. Not even close.
Like so much other hardware, it is brought down by Horrible Software.
Besides being difficult to install and get running (thanks to the intrusive "e-license"),
it just doesn't work. You're paying for 8 output channels, but the software doesn't recognize anything beyond the Main Stereo outputs.
Then, when you're ready to pull your hair out, you try contacting "customer support."
But that's a joke. There is no support. No phone number, just an email address that gets you a useless response like "Re-Install the software"
This doggy's going back where it came from.
